  1. Yeah, I mean for me, it was more the whole event that I was missing. I mean, if you're around 26/27 like I am, you would have been completely immersed in all things Oasis from like 13 years old - should you wanted to have been of course. I did, and I loved it. I remember getting my mum to get me 'Be Here Now' the day it came out, and I rode along with the record for a couple of months and then thought, this is absolutely sh1te! I still can't play that record, it's terrible. And I didn't even buy the next one because that was even worse. But I completely agree with McGee's sentiments when he talks about the Beatles and Stones. I certainly haven't seen since Oasis that MASS societal clamour to buy the singles, wear the clothes, queue all night for gigs etc. Something monumental did happen in 94/95 I think. Yes, there was The Strokes, yes there was The Libertines and yes, there was the Arctic Monkeys, but nothing has came close, in my eyes to 94-97. I think in many respects, it is people who hate the band (which they are perfectly entitled to do) who don't want to recognise the huge impact on society which Oasis etc had - good or bad. To me, 94-97 speaks for itself. 'Lad culture' will always be there, whether people like it or not.
  2. McGee on music: My top five Oasis gigs | Music | guardian.co.uk There's a secret pain within me that only gets triggered at mention of this gig!! I was massive into Oasis as a 15 year old in '97, but didn't go! Was away when the tickets went onsale and suffered the turmoil of seeing my mates at the front of the queue on BBC Scotland whilst having my mince and tatties!!!
  3. Sounds quality. Please check out the Morayshire 5-piece, The Social Chameleons. Cracking young band from Hopeman. The Social Chameleons on MySpace Music - Free Streaming MP3s, Pictures & Music Downloads
  4. Yeah, I was about 15 too at the OCS gig and now you mention it, I can picture PP Arnold's pot belly or 'mott' as my mates called it! I can definitely remember Oscar Harrison floating about at the front door too! We were the very first in the queue for that, about 6 of us piled in straight from school, probably wearing a Ben Sherman shirt or something!!!! 8-)
  5. Mine was Ocean Colour Scene at the AECC, circa 96/97. 'Marchin' Already' tour. Support was from a Brummie band called Sergeant funnily enough, and PP Arnold who sang on 'It's A Beautiful Thing'. And from then on, I never looked back!
  6. See that's the sort've thing I was after! Yeah, a 'Nowhere' - era show at the Music Hall would have been pretty special to me. But hey, such is life! Doesn't stop ye wishing you went though!!! Early Verve to me, 'All In The Mind' through to 'Storm In Heaven', I find incredible. The rest I can live without (a few tracks aside!) 8-)
  7. Because Ride and early Verve are a two of my favourite bands of all time. I wish I went.
  8. Did any of you 'older' users of this forum attend this gig in Aberdeen during Ride's 'Going Blank Again' tour? I actually feel sick when I hear some of my older chums talking about it! Ride did a record signing in HMV on the day of the gig apparently, and a few folk I know got suspended from school for skiving! Would be interested to hear anyones' stories.......
  9. AECC gigs are usually crap, and the venue's just as much to blame as the crowd! Let's face it, it's a hanger! The sound's all over the shop! I remember the worst support band I ever saw was Chikinki (sp?) who were supporting The Charlatans at the Music Hall. What was worse was that Driveblind were on before them, and they were amazing that night. In terms of records, the ultimate one for me was Oasis' 'Be Here Now'. I rode along with it for a few months when it came out and then I thought, 'This is absolutely sh1te!'. I think it's probably my greatest ever let-down of a record, as it should have been amazing, but it also makes sense given that they were all off their faces on charlie. It's a shame. The first two records will always do it for me though, will always remind me of my schooldays.

    Your current read?

Once the Cobain one's finished, which it nearly is, I've got 'Can't Buy Me Love: The Beatles, Britain and America' and then 'Hand Me My Travellin' Shoes: In Search Of Blind Willie McTell' to look forward to.
  11. Have to say, this is a pretty sick thread. Of course everyone's entitled to their opinions, but c'mon!!! At the end of the day, these people are somebody's child, and yes, they have probably wreaked havoc amongst those around them for the chaotic life choices that they have made. But to show a complete disregard to it is pretty dark. I've seen at close hand the complete destruction and devastation that heroin can cause. It would be very interesting for you to meet a couple I know that have lost both their kids to drugs. It would be very interesting for you to chat to a couple, from a good area, who's lives have been torn apart, and wake up every day knowing that they'll never see their kids again. Think again.......
  12. It's gotta be folk on the likesa Bebo and Facebook that leave messages like: 'Last night was amazing hun! You are sooooo good to me! Love you loads!! MWAH! XXXXXXXXX' Gies a fkn break! Just pick up the phone!

I'm reading 'Heavier Than Heaven' - the Biography of Kurt Cobain Fascinating.
  14. I don't remember Moose when they were out because I was knee-high to a grasshopper, but I do have a Moose track on another shoegaze compilation 'Like A Daydream: A Shoegazing Guide'. That's another cracking record. Some of Slowdive's stuff is just amazing to me - '40 Days', 'Alison', 'When The Sun Hits', 'Slowdive', 'Catch The Breeze', 'Machine Gun' - all absolute gems of tunes. I've got a Swervedriver anthology double album - to be honest I've never really got into it. Even 'Mustang' for some reason has never really done it. Strange! My Bloody Valentine's 'When You Sleep' is another tune I've had on heaps recently! There's a few absolute cracking bands on this compilation. Check out Echodrone, Soundpool, Ceremony and Mist & Sea.
  15. Just thought I'd post up a wee note about this new shoegaze compilation called 'Take Me On The Wildest Spree' which was released in Australia at the tail end of November. I picked up a free magazine in Perth which had an interview with Tom Elliot, an MD of an investment company in Melbourne, who compiled the CD. Basically, he went to Oxford Uni during the early 90s and witnessed the movement at close-hand, watching the likes of Ride, My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive etc. Anyway, I was intrigued by this and wrote to him, and basically he does an on/off shoegaze radio show on independent Melbourne radio and was approached by a record company to compile a CD of 'newgaze' - basically current bands influenced by the genre. The CD's really good, featuring 16 bands from all over - New York, Melbourne, Sweden, UK etc. I had a check on amazon and you should be able to get it, if interested. I strongly recommend it if you're into any of the aforementioned bands, or the likes of The Jesus & Mary Chain etc etc. Amazon.com: Take Me on the Wildest Spree: Take Me on the Wildest Spree: Music That is all! Cheers
  16. I'm in Oz mate for most of 2009! One for the future perhaps! Just listen....... YouTube - slowdive- 40 days
  17. I think I'll add my tuppence-worth here as it's a subject close to my heart. Although I'm temporarily overseas at the moment, I'm in there all the time when I'm at home, and it's a great thing to see - despite the internet and MP3 age - that an independent music store has survived through all that, and remains a focal point of the community, which essentially is what I think it is. Being an absolute musical enthusiast (or nutter), I'm sure I'm not the only one on here that struggles to walk past that place without going in and having a look! Especially the second hand CDs section which I think is absolute gold and has opened so many more doors for me when looking for stuff. Particularly again in the internet era where so many people download. Personally, I hate the thought of all music being in digital form. I know I probably sound like an auld mannie (I'm only 26!), but to me, nothing beats having a record in hard copy. And the great thing with the likes of having a second hand section is that all you're doing is buying a record for say 4 quid and sticking it straight onto your computer and Ipod, and then straight onto the CD shelf (in alphabetical and chronological order of course!). And to me there's absolutely no shame in buying second hand CDs and I think you're a mug to completely ignore it to be honest! And I've seen myself taking complete chances on records given the fact it's so cheap, a few quid for an album is relative peanuts! So, hats off to the second hand section!! And yeah, without the need to mention individuals, it's always great to meet and speak to people who are passionate about what they do, and when someone's like that about their work it shines through. So hats off to that place, I really don't know what I would've done without it! Probably end up spending my pennies on other vices! It's easily my favourite thing about Aberdeen's 'music scene'. Cheers p.s. I would be delighted to speak about shoegaze for a few hours over a cup of tea and a Kit-Kat! Somebody should start a club! "Right, in today's lesson class, we're going to talk about the relative merits of My Bloody Valentine, Ride, Slowdive, Chapterhouse and Spacemen 3" F*** yeah! 8-)
  18. Don't know if this will be limited to Aberdeen bands, but the best band I've seen on a relatively local basis is The Social Chameleons, from Hopeman and Burghead. They've been through in Aberdeen a few times already, they're all still kids. Seen them support Sergeant the week after Sergeant supported Oasis in Aberdeen. Saw them at Drummonds and the Tunnels too support Vesuvian and Disco Filth I think. Really melodic, jangly pop. Cool melodies. Check out their myspace at www.myspace.com\thesocialchameleons That's my shout anyway. Cheers
  19. In my opinion, the best song ever by an Aberdeen band is 'Cut Me Deep' by The Jasmine Minks. One of Alan McGee's early signings to Creation. Credibility. YouTube - Jasmine Minks - Cut Me Deep
