Interesting article I came across regarding valve outputs
Longhorn replied to HateEvent's topic in Musicians' Corner
Fail. I had a ZVEX nano head I wouldn't turn all the way up if the neighbours were home. Output of 0.5W My Matamp switches between 1W and 50W and a few choices in between. Handy. Peeps may want to look into speaker efficiency too. Very big bearing on loudness/volume. -
Try a Framus Cobra, or Bogner Exctasy Classic. I've played them - might be what you are looking for.

I heard the guy from The Cherrykicks playing a Duotone at Moshulu going straight from the XLRs on the back mixing the recto and JCM800 models. Sounded pretty damn good to me - better than the tone from the other players who were using my JMP MKII and 4x12" that night.
-
Bonjour. We'd like to come back please.
-
I use JJ valves in my amp. Sound good to me, but never really done much A/B testing against other valves. I'm actually going down to my warehosue to fuck around with the Matamp tonight - gonna replace the EL34s with 6L6s or 5881s (or a mixture) - see if I can get a more metal sound out of the amp - get it a bit more scooped and some *chunk* to the palm mutes.
-
oh yeah, Dennis Marshall is an awesome dude.
-
Tip #1 Never run the amp without a speaker or load connected to it

One lucky punter will get a Golden Ticket from Longhorn at the gig. Upon receipt it will entitle the lucky fucker to a trip to our van to ahem, "talk to our agent", and experience one of our secret bonding rituals. Think L7 mixed with a German Schizer movie. With raw beef curtains.

Yup, you heard it! We'll be finishing a 3 day highland tour (with Firebrand) in the Moorings Bar on Saturday night - where we aim to party in our home away from home. I apologise in advance for our new bassist - he's an eNgLiSh!!!!!

Thanks for the replies guys. We're playing in the Newmarket bar, thinking we only need 300 W or so - it's for one vocal in a pretty small place. We wouldn't be wanting to go out to Aberdeen to hire since it would add too much to the driving going Inverness - Aberdeen - Inverness - Thurso in one day. And yeah, I've got a similar post on the HUBL. Thanks guys - it has been very helpful, and I'll let you know how we get on.

Bonjour. We're playing a gig in Thurso and need to bring a PA. Problem is we're on a 3 day tour so if we hire in Edinburgh (where we're coming from) we need to pay for 4 days, for a PA we need only one night. I know it's a long shot since this is an Aberdeen board, but anyone know anywhere to hire a PA from? We're playing (and staying) in Inverness the night before and will be coming back down through there (got Aberdeen the next night - Moorings - party on!), so somewhere to hire there or Thurso would be great. Cheers dudes and dudettes. Craig

How much do that The Dials band that are playing with them suck? I am going to endevouar to get the support at the Edinburgh gig, just to fuck with them ha ha!

Probably about 70% Matamp, 30% Crate. I run the Crate with less gain too, just on an overdrive seeting. My footswitch for more gain controls a setting on the Matamp that leaves the crate un-affected. I do have an SD-1 as clean boost up front that works on both though. It's only if I can be arsed though. i mostly just play a regular rig.

Well, it's not my first choice of amp! But it'll do as my backup up, due to it's light weight and easy carrying around. I can get a *usable* sound out of it, it's not amazing, but it'll get me through a gig. When I use it as along with the Matamp in a wet/dry setup, the signal it's getting is from the FX loop, so it's using the Matamp's pre-amp section. It's basically a clean power amp then. It helps tighten up the sound, cos the Matamp has 4 output valves running full tilt - pretty saggy response. I'm gonna pick up a second head at some point. Thinking about a 5150, or maybe one of the old Randall SS amps. Although the Laney GH50L is meant to be pretty awesome. But this is my number #1 (along with the matching angled 2x12"):

Don't rag on them too much. It's a good wee amp. I mean, it's not gonna replace the Matamp, but for gigging it makes a handy thing to take with you cos it's so light. If the Matamp goes down, I might not have time to fix it. I've also found that the Crate is a much tighter amp, so when it's blended in with the Matamp, the 2 tones together make a good heavy rock/metal sound. Lots of metallers play SS amps. It's also a *very* surprisingly good bass head.

I've got a DLS Echo Tap coming in the post. It's an analog sounding digital delay with 2 delays - one you set on the front, one is tap tempo. I need tap tempo. I'm gonna get new leads for my board and for guitar and amp. I recently got the EH Pedal Gig Bag - it's pretty awesome, I'm very happy. I'm gonna get a second Matamp 2x12 cab to give me the full (mini) stack. I'll get the straight one as I already have angled. Get some greenbacks in there. Then I can also use it along with my Crate Powerblock for a Wet/Dry rig. Been eyeing up an LTD EC-1000 vintage black too, but doubt it'll happen.

It's to have 2 sounds at the same time. When you mix them up you can get a killer heavy sound - it's what you do in the studio - blend different amp tones. I sometimes run 2 amps together if I can be assed. Always better than just one.

+1 on tonebone headbone.
-
I have one. For £50 it is worth it. Very light, and the tone is defintely passable. Quite a dark, kind of old mark series Mesa sound - low mids. To just be able to chuck it in your bag, it's very handy. I use to power thw wet side of a wet/dry tig in our practise room. But its main use is as a bass head. Does a very good job at it. There are some crate amps with a silver V near the top - combos. They sound pretty nice, and the palomino ones have been getting a good write up. Billy Gibbons plays the V thing-y combo.

We'll do it. Or do you want to wait and see how it pans out on Saturday?

The T-Rex only has one sound at a time. You can set it for reverb if you put the time down low enough but you can't have both without twisting some knobs I've always found reverb to be a waste of time for live playing, since generally you are in a large room anyway. Just get Mark to stick some on at the desk if needs be. Matamp actually have the license to make Harry Joyce heads - they are doing their own versions of them now I think. All hand made and so on. You could get custom "Moorings Bar" ones with a pirate on them. My amp ha a bull's head on the front, and when I step on the overdrive it's eyes light up red! ha ha. I need to look into a wee smoke machine for the nostrils. The thing I've found with house amps is that ones with a one button footswitch are best. People get too confused, and keep stepping on the channel 1 switch to try and turn the distortion on. I lent a Marshall with a 3 button switch to a girl at a gig and she just kept stepping on all the wrong switches - it was feeding back and howling and she started crying. Interesting (and slightly related) note - in Saudi Arabia women aren't allowed to drive cars. But it would be very controversial to suggest a link there, wouldn't it?

Cool - I wish I had the guitarists' volume controls in front of me at the venue I mix at. Fucking guitarists! I haven't had to resort to threats of violence yet, but I've been close! That's why my amp runs at anything between 1W and 28W. Valve power switching is the way forward.
