Just finished Dead Girl Walking. I really enjoyed this. Contrary to what I said before, this is a slightly new take for him. Telling two concurrent stories that feed together at the end isn't anything particularly groundbreaking, particularly for a crime/detective story, but while one of the tales was Jack Parlabane doing his detective thang, the other was kind of a budding romance, which was both well-written and really engaging. Good book. Starting Send Back The Money: The Free Church of Scotland and American Slavery now. Basically, when Scotland first separated Church and State, the Church part needed money and took a bunch of donations from slave owners in exchange for their church remaining silent on the subject of slavery. Just getting started now but I believe this book talks of the major Scottish institutions and schools etc founded on this blood-money and of the campaign to try to get them to pay reparations for it. It's pretty dense and the language can be overly-formal which becomes challenging in places ("When the Stuart monarchy tried to impose Episcopal authority on the land, it required draconian military rule to control those who swore a Covenant to resist.") but it's interesting stuff (if you're interested in such stuff). xx

Turns out I work with a lot of pretty racist people. But on the plus side, I learned that there are no black Oscar nominees because all black actors were just a bit shit this year, and that if black people would stop talking about racism then there'd be no racism. So, y'know, educational. xx

Bob's Burgers is fucking excellent! I might try some of F is for Family again, but it just felt like some mid-points from Burr's standup shoehorned into a cartoon for no real reason. If Bill Burr did a stand-up routine where he just talked about the events of that show happening to him when he was a nipper, it'd have been a thousand times funnier. xx

Yeah I spotted a few folk who haven't posted here since the year dot had recent status updates so figured it must be a twitter connection. xx

It's a difficult book to get through if you're trying to race the story along. It's one of those books that's written like prose, where the whole story stops for 5 pages to describe the colour of a tree. Just finished The Light Fantastic by Terry Pratchett - loved it. Looking forward to going back to Discworld books, but the lack of chapters in them really threw my pace... Anyway, I've decided I want to read more this year after hardly reading anything last year. The 50 book challenge will never happen for me, so I'm aiming for a minimum of 12 this year. I think one a month is a decent target. Just started the almost-newest Christopher Brookmyre book - Dead Girl Walking. crime drama/black comedy, nothing new for him, but I'm enjoying it as I love his stuff and I love that Parlabane is back in action. Getting this one knocked out in time for his new new book coming out at the end of the month. xx

I'm now on the "Jessica Jones is the best thing EVAR" bandwagon. Loved that shit. And having finished it, the wife and I have binge-watched 3.5 seasons of Once Upon a Time. It's predictable hogwash that drags seasons out twice as long as they need to be by having characters make fucktard decisions, but I'm digging it. Robert Carlyle is fucking killing it. xx

I think the beer is shite mostly. I tried one if their newer ones a month or two back and it was lovely, but I have no idea what it was called. I personally think the I HATE BREWDOG stuff comes from the same place as people "bragging" about never having watched Star Wars. I think it's mostly a reaction to the onslaught of people wanking on about how much they love it. xx
