  1. An Evening with Rocco DeLuca +Luck Jim+The Boy Lacks Patience Tuesday 19th December 7.50 (5 concessions and Regulars) Doors open: 7.30pm Show starts: 8pm Box Office: 01224 642230 The expansive, evocative twang of the acoustic dobro guitar forms the foundation, the cornerstone of Rocco DeLuca's music, the initial ripple that flows from the heart of the Delta blues in ever-widening circles to the most modern rock & roll. DeLuca's debut Ironworks Music album bares that soul and lets the blood flow through its tracks, a blues-based journey from its birthplace on the Mississippi ("Dope") through its electrification in the juke joints of Chicago ("Get Out") and its psychedelic British '60s revival ("Swing Low") to the trip-hoppin' future ("Favor"). Imagine Robert Johnson and Elmore James, Neil Young fronting the Stones, Jeff Buckley dueting with Beck. Music is part of DeLuca's genetic make-up. He learned to play from his hippie father Dan, a wild-living blues-rock guitarist who toured with the likes of Bo Diddley and the Coasters, whose constant roadwork and dalliances with both Hell's Angels and drugs left young Rocco to be raised by his grandmother. His mother, whom he only met for the first time two years ago, was also a '60s casualty. "All my dad's records had a hole in the upper right-hand corner from when my mom tried to shoot him and the bullet went right through his collection," laughs DeLuca. "My father was an electric guitar player, but I wanted to go to the source, the beginning. On that acoustic stuff, the lyrics were more felt, the playing more primitive, the effect more powerful." On the basis of his debut effort, expect Rocco DeLuca to settle in for a long stay. www.roccodeluca.co.uk

  3. Omar Sosa-Dhafer Youssef Trio featuring Marque Gilmore Tuesday 17th October 12 (8 concessions and Regulars) Doors open: 8.30pm Show starts: 9.30pm Omar Sosa is a world music phenomenon, a piano sorcerer of breathtaking skill, dynamism and imagination. Originally a percussionist, he attended Cubas prestigious Escuela Nacional de Musica where he discovered his aptitude for piano and immersed himself in European classical studies as well as Afro-Cuban musical history. In 1995 he moved to San Francisco, where he launched his recording career, releasing a series of albums encompassing jazz ballads, rap, funk and African folklore. Tunisian Dhafer Youssef trained in Sufi singing in the traditional Koran school as a youngster and risked the wrath of family and friends when he fell in love with the oud, the Arabian lute. Revered for his achingly beautiful voice and masterful playing, he has worked with trumpeters Markus Stockhausen and Paolo Fresu, Norwegian guitarist Eivind Aarset and French double bass virtuoso Renaud Garcia-Fons and made a stunning contribution to Sosas brilliant Mulatos album. Their tour with percussion alchemist Marque Gilmore aka the inna-most founder of New Yorks Black Rock Coalition and pioneer of live drumnbass, and who has played with everyone from A Guy Called Gerald to Joe Zawinul, is certain to be one of the musical events of 2006. www.omarsosa.net www.dhafferyoussef.com www.drumfm.com www.tuneup.org.uk

  5. What factors contribute to your rep?
  6. No, I'm afraid it's not happening. Tour promoter had told us it was 90% certain otherwise it wouldn't have gone in the brochure even as a TBC. Darn that 10% uncertainty factor. Apologies for the disappointment.
  7. Timings for tonight are: 8pm Bricolage 9pm 1990s 10pm Long Blondes
  8. Ah well, hopefully people will stay at The lemon Tree for a couple of drinks afterwards then - there's a shit hot DJ called John McHugh playing.
  9. Some guy with a central belt accent - he had a cordroy hat on, denim jacket and Burberry pattern scarf. I think (hope!) that he made the comment more because he'd been saying he didn't enjoy your set, and when I said I had enjoyed it he said "your not one of their....". He could at least said older brother or uncle though - cheeky b*stard. Cheers for the offer, but I think I'll pass on being the LK's Dad - I have trouble enough looking after myself never mind 4 rock n rollers too.
  10. I found out the time from the Tunnels website. Excellent gig and having only heard the last couple of singles it was a lot heavier than I'd expected. Little Kicks were good too despite someone asking me if I was one of the band's Dad in the toilets - I'm no spring chicken, but Jesus!
  11. Anyone know what time it starts?
  12. Tape the football - and avoid the score till you get home - Likely Lads stylie. Fa's playin' anyway?
  13. Hi Neil, I was away when these changes wre being made (hence the last posting). Combining the Calendar with the Gigs and Events forum is a grea idea - only thing is none of the last three events I've tried to add to either - Shooglenifty (Forum), Long Blondes (Calendar) and Billy Bragg (Forum) - do you know are they just awaiting approval or is there a technical problem? Cheers Jamie
  14. Nels Andrews+AJ Roach Tuesday 24th October 7.50 (5 concessions & Regulars) Doors open:7.30pm Show starts: 8pm Two of the US Americana scenes foremost artists team up for what will be a stunning double bill. Roachs authentic Appalachian rootsiness will be complemented by Andrews poetic, widescreen vision in a double bill no one who truly appreciates great songwriting should miss. Nels Andrews Sparsely arranged, slyly intelligent country-folk stuffed with juniper winds, Juarez jails and long women in short dresses, delivered with all the gruff urgency of Tom Waits over lap steel and ruptured guitar.**** Uncut The audience is transfixed, no one leaves, no one goes to the bar, they just listen, to a lyricist whose words have a power and intensity that is rarely matched, and remind you of the glory days of Morrison and Dylan. Americana UK AJ Roach a masterclass in illustrating how much sophistication goes into creating so-called primitive music. The Herald His Americana folk songs unfold beautiful narratives and a gritty sentiment not heard since the late great Townes Van Zandt last broke the hearts of an audience. Listen.com Roach is a deep woods troubadour with a cunning wit and a southern gothic spiritualism that sounds older than voodoo. Pop Matters

  16. The Bard Of Barking continues his Hope Not Hate solo tour and makes a very welcome return to The Lemon Tree. While increasingly engaged as an author, activist and agitator, Bragg is first and foremost a singer-songwriter; one of the best these islands have ever produced. Blending personal and political material in an entirely natural and unforced way, an evening with Billy Bragg covers a vast range of emotional territory. www.billybragg.co.uk
