  1. What's the point in this argument? If you think that Alice Cooper and Deep Purple shouldn't be headlining a festival who would you put above them? I don't see any bigger bands kicking about the UK at the moment. Metallica and Iron Maiden headlined the last few Leeds/Reading ones and no one really complained about that' date=' in fact, they put on some of the best shows of the weekend (and I don't particularly like 'em).[/quote']

I agree, where are the the new bands capable of headlining / have the pulling power? Just like most other genres nostalgia seems to be the order of the day due to the lack of replacement for the older acts. All you see now is rock kids going around with AC/DC, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Iron Maiden, Ozzy and Kiss tshirts. Even Metallica, Slayer, Chilli's etc are 20 years old. Sad but true...but not as sad as The Daftness.

  2. I've nowt at all against the 60s. Infact' date=' it depresses me that music will never matter as much as it did then. However, I do have a considerable amount against the deification of Jimi Hendrix, and against the [b']70s, but that's for the other thread...

I agree in some respects about your 70s comment although it's mainly the early to mid period... but just coz people went into widdly, epic guitar solo territory it is not the fault of Jimi Hendrix. To borrow from John Lennon's quote "Jesus was all right but his disciples were thick and ordinary.", so people who claim an influence don't necessarily get the point e.g. Oasis.

    :gringo:

  3. He didn't just have impact on crappy rock bands that came after though. He influenced muscicians of all kinds from the moment he 'arrived'!

Agreed and it wasn't even just his guitar playing songwriting, style, production. Every one of his major contemporaries like Beck, Clapton and Townsend were influenced and blown away.

I can't even think of why a comparison with Captain Sensible is made. Have I missed something as I can't see him as a major influence of any note. He is funny live though...

  4. Don't know about the all time bit but here's a few

    Jellyfish - pop perfection

Kings X - heavy, soul and harmonious

Fishbone - Ska/metal/funksters who were gazzumped by the likes of those white Chilli boys

Damien Dempsey - Irish singer songwriter with a Marley vibe

Taj Mahal - Blues with a soul slant who then moved into every style imaginable

  5. Coldplay...the new U2....god help us

    whilst ranting about U2....

It never siezes to amaze me when people like Bono say they are trying to save the starving world. One or two pages from his bank book would go a long way to keeping a whole village in food for years

Yes, the cheek of the man to spout forth about poverty whilst flying his bloody hat first class coz he forgot it... prick

Musically U2 have been dead since Actung Baby

  6. I reckon 'I am the walrus' by the Beatles fits nicely into the "What the F***?" category......

Vey imaginative but profoundly silly. I give you.......

'Yellow matter custard dripping from a dead dog's eye

    Crabalocker fishwife pornographic priestess

Boy you been a naughty girl' date=' you let your knickers down

I am the eggman, they are the eggmen

I am the walrus, goo goo goo joob'

    and.....

'Semolina pilchard climbing up the Eiffel Tower

    Elementary penguin singing Hare Krishna

Man you should have seen them kicking Edgar Alan Poe

I am the eggman, they are the eggmen

I am the walrus, goo goo goo joob goo goo goo joob

Goo goo goo joob goo goo goo joob

Goo gooooooooooo jooba jooba jooba jooba jooba jooba

    Jooba jooba

    Jooba jooba

    Jooba jooba'[/quote']

That was the whole point of it as he was horrified that the kids at his old school were "studying" his lyrics and he thought that would fuck them right up :gringo:

Anyway Saxon... getting a tad confused by day and night always amused me...

    "...This is Scandinavian 101

Flight from Hawaii coming out of the sun

Kennedy, you should be in sight

We can't see a thing here in the night..."

Mind you Saxon and heavy metal in general amuse me anyway

  7. Well I would beggar to differ on the titles of both (never heard 1...as 2 put me right off). I've got it on olde worlde cassette somewhere and I'll dig it out if I feel sad over the festive period.

    But yes, it's shite.

The Kinks have some fab stuff, mostly in the 60s though. That Come Dancing effort ...poor fare

  8. That' date=' or some twat from X-Factor.................[/quote']

Oh the frivolous festive joys

Good gig in yer hametoun. The Method, BGE, The Phoenix Band (funky cool outfit) and Mute (Dyla's troops) at The Legion ...pro PA and lights 8)

  9. i hate it.

It's the worst sort of insipid' date=' naive, faux-nostalgic clap-trap that people seem to fall over at this time of the year. The nations Granny's & their spinster Aunt's will sitting smiling smugly when it comes on the radio & they'll be rushing down to Woolworths to make their one CD purchase of the year. It's music for people that don't like music.

Only this country could be stupid enough to fall for a three minute schmaltz-fest like this that glorifies a fucking digger holding up the fucking traffic.

Fucking twats - if they held me up when I was in the car I'd kick the little bastard up the arse and report his Dad to the HSE.[/quote']

    Christmas number one then... o_O

  10. No' date=' I'm sure I have records by artists who've commited a multitude of crimes and at no point did I ever say people shouldn't listen to John Lennon's music. I was arguing the notion of John Lennon as some kind of unquestionable deity, whilst people seem to think it's fine to downplay the death of Dimebag.[/quote']

Well I've said in virually every reply that I don't think he was a saint and I accept that along with every other person of huge talent he had massive flaws (christ he was a rock star). The thing I object to is your focus on trying to make a huge deal of some aspects of his personality when he was a complex character and achieved an unimaginable positive impact on music and the world in general. For that alone I believe he deserves respect.

Also I can't speak for everyone but I have not been disrespectful to Dimebag during this sorry thread and the only reason there has been negativity at all in this was the crass, cheap and unnecessary swipe in the opening post ...but Hog has covered this.

By the way, is Cliff Richard your hero?

  11. You beat both me and Hummer to a Manics reference opportunity! I must be slowing up...

Do you think of Mark Chapman as being "big enough" to admit to John Lennon's murder? Should that mean he's absolved of his crime?

Pity Lennon wasn't "giving peace a chance" when he was battering women and getting drunk and being abusive.

You never answered my question. Do you buy and support artists who are morally perfect and have flawless characters?

  12. I respect that he made music which was enjoyed by millions of people as I have already stated (that is not showing disrespect). I dont respect him regarding beating the shit out of his wife so therefore I have respect and disrespect towards him. Its easy to say "I was wrong" but to be honest' date=' you shouldnt hit your wife in the first place.

As I have already said, Im bored and perhaps having a crappy stressful day so venting anger in perhaps the wrong way. Apologies. P.S. as you know, I dont usually have angry rants, not my style.[/quote']

Nae bother Hog, just have a bit of tact and thought.

  13. You beat both me and Hummer to a Manics reference opportunity! I must be slowing up...

Do you think of Mark Chapman as being "big enough" to admit to John Lennon's murder? Should that mean he's absolved of his crime?

Pity Lennon wasn't "giving peace a chance" when he was battering women and getting drunk and hassling bar staff.

    Hardly a comparable crime.

Lennon was no angel and if that moron hadn't wanted to make a name for himself maybe you could address your "point" with Lennon himself.

One thing about the comments Hog and yourself. Do you buy and support artists who are morally perfect and have flawless characters? If not, you're both hypocrites.
