  1. The Vox is something which I've been thinking about trying for a while. It's the lack of a mid control that worries me. That's the same on the AC15 isn't it? As an aside Mike, are you jammnig out ideas with Dave Officer in Siberia? How is that going?
  2. Aye, I was gonna suggest a Shure Beta 57 as a general all rounder but if you did have a spare channel for a dedicated kick drum mic (AKG D112, Shure 52), then I think you'd be much happier. You could also try an AKG C1000 small diaphragm condenser. It can run off a 9v battery, will be much more sensitive to what you do, will be useable for live work but you just have to be a bit more careful with it. Finally you could just go for the Shure 55SH. Sure would look purty with your setup... A Shure 57/58 or AKG C1000 will cost you under 100, the 55SH will just push you over.
  3. Probably a combo to start. I personally like quite warm mids but if I can vary that with some brightness, I'd feel I'd be on to a winner. From what I've been (briefly!) reading, I'd like to have a fair bit of headroom on a clean channel before the distortion starts kicking in. Would it just be worth asking people what they use AND/OR like and why? What charateristics make special in terms of it's sound. What is it you get from your valve amp that wouldn't be satisfied by other options?
  4. What are the wonderful Haho boys using at the minute? Didn't Mini have somthing a little different?
  5. I kinda wanted to broaden out the other thread on here about valve sounds. I'm definitely interested in geting a valve amp in the not so distant future but wanted to hear some opinions/advice on what was worth looking into or staying away from. I'm not a big fan of Marshall (sorry to the Marhsall fans) but obviously wouldn't rule them out. One which really stood out for me a while back was a Music Man (couldn't give you the model now I'm afraid). I've been interested in trying some Vox amps but recently had a shot of a couple and was a little disappointed if I'm being honest. Again can't remember which models and I didn't really have enough time to play about with them. Anyway...what's worthwhile in your opinion? I'm not looking to pay stupid amounts of money but am wanting to put some cash aside and invest in a quality piece of kit. I blame Scott Blessed/Weapon for leading me towards this new obsession.
  6. Saturday was phenomenal. Thanks to all who came along. It meant a lot and was one hell of a good night. Enjoyed all that took place. Just wish I could personally take part more in the post gig carnage! I'll see what crime I can get involved in after Frightened Rabbit on Thurs!
  7. EEK! Better be good that night then... The drummer's hair is almost right on that smiley!
  8. That's very kind of you guys! I went home with a much more gloomy impression of our set. I couldn't stay for the whole FQ set but Phil came back with glowing words. From what I caught, I think the bass player's distortion could use some more girth. It seemed a little thin. Can never say no to Glock though.
  9. Bump, bump, bump. Looking forward to this. Think we got a first gig nerves purged last night in Glasgow. This should be a tiny victory for all concerned. First time I've caught the two out of town bands. Really swell. Kays Lavelle have a lot of space and texture in their tunes and some hot Glock action. They are just playing as a 3 piece (down from a 6!) but I like their approach. Early doors people!
  10. I totally don't remember you even having this amp! In terms of help, I have none for you. I agree with Chris though... clean your knobs. That what married life offers you now
  11. Re-watched the Cabinet of Dr. Caliagri for the first time in years. Still an awesome bit of cinema. Also re-watched I am Legend. Terrible adaptation, but not a wholly awful movie. They should have done something else with the vampires. They also ruined the ending. If you haven't read the book, please please do. One of my favourite reads. You'll finish it in an evening once you get into it.
  12. Aye, I've read that the yamaha budgets guitars are actually okay and I won't rule them out. Just would never have thought of them as a first choice. They are not a brand name which leaps out at me and says quality acoustic craftsmanship but if they sound good, you can't fault them.
  13. How much did you pay for your freshman chris? Would love to recommend one of those for the simple reason they are endorsed by the Steven "Mojo Priest" Seagal. There's even talk of a signature series. I think I'll go have a tinker about at the weekend.
  14. Hey all, Just looking for any friendly advice on buying an acoustic guitar. A mate's girlfriend is wanting advice as she wants to buy her partner one for Xmas. It's a tight budget of around 150. Plenty of Yamaha's for sure but I kinda think he'd like something a little different. He also plays fairly often live so I'm thinking an electro-acoustic. He won't get around to installing a pickup for a very long time so I thought I'd save him the hassle. Best I could find so far is Tanglewood Evolution TW28-SLN Electro Acoustic at 179. Freshman were also recommended to me but I think they're a little out of the price range. Any help or thoughts are much appreciated!
  15. Yeah, I'm just getting into his stuff but it's freakin lovely. I've been listening to Soldier On quite intensively. Hoping to pick up some more before Xmas. Didn't realise he played up here. Now I am gutted! I'll check out the National daytrotter session for sure! Think I picked up a Shellac session from there eons ago. Forgot to go back.
  16. Aye, that's my reservation. I let a friend take a look at my guitar (who knows his stuff and has worked with guitars for a number of years) a few months back and I thought the issue had been resolved but now fear he may have worsened the problem. Luckily, a colleague of mine who has done guitar set ups for numerous years is willing to take a look for free. I haven't exhausted all my options just yet! Thanks for all the advice!
  17. I've got three!: Tulsa Drone album called Songs from a Mean Season. Americana Post Rock (ish) stuff with a dulcimer included. School of Seven Bells - Alpinisms. Very MBV but very, very listenable. If you liked Chromaphobia, have you tried The Field album From Here We Go Sublime?
  18. That's good thinking batman! I'll take it to Tom's and see what they say. I'll have a look at a new nut too (guffaw guffaw).
  19. Aye, I did try this already and still not happy with the results. Maybe I need a 2nd round of it to try and perfect it. It's mainly the G string and how deep it sits in the nut. It sounds pinched when you play it open, and the intonation goes way off past the 12th. I was told that I probably need to raise where the string sits by putting some super glue in the gap where the string sits. More professional solutions would be proabably be quite costly. I'm pretty skint and just want my guitar to stay in tune!
  20. Tell me about it....too much use;) Pun away my friend, pun away.... (P.S. This temp thing...gosh darn things are slow.)
  21. No, don't really ever go to Tom's now. Worth a shout though. I'll give them a call and see what they say.
  22. Hey all, I've got an Epiphone Studio Dot series guitar and I need some help with it. The Intonation is off and the G string sits too deep in the nut. Can anyone help me with the set up for this guitar without charging an arm and a leg to make it play pretty again?
  23. I dunno how he'd feel about me putting his name forward but Scott at the Tunnels is a dab hand at setting up Bass guitars too.
  24. It isn't the craziest pedal you've ever used but it's a pretty deep effect. In moderation, you're gonna get the same sort of effect as the guitar sound on Mission of Burma's Trem Two but it can do a many more variations than that. There's a selector switch for smooth sine waves or square and then a knob to vary the size of the wave, another knob to vary the rate and one more which varies the depth. Feel free to come round and try it out Jan if your interested. I'm sure with your Memory Man, it'll be pretty freaky.
