  1. Phil, does it make me gay if I say that the above statement is the sweetest thing ever?

    Possibly.

    Best gig of all time:

Hookers Green No1 when Lucy started a fight and called the bouncer a "fascist".

no, that fact that you chug cocks makes you gay :)

i remember that night, good times. the facist bit, not the cock chugging.

  2. The council offered 2 ways for the venue to stay open, they did not cut the usual grant. That is a solid fact. Unless becky was at the meeting and heard something different.

Remember the LT has had its core funding taken away by the Arts Council. The council have done a hell of a lot more for the Lemon Tree than anyone else, so stop giving them a hard time people.

My only other post on this forum was......yes you've guessed it.....about the lemon tree in financial difficulty!

500 signatures on a petition. woopie. who's going to read that and care?

I'm sorry people are out of jobs, but it is not the fault of the council. The loss of the SAC grant, and the SHOCKING report should have been the kick up the backside they needed, but nothing happened.

The Lemon Tree is dead. Long Live the Union Terrace Gardens Project.

no ones giving them a hard time. were you at the meeting to hear the full options in person? or are you getting your information from the press like the rest of us? you can't just claim something is a solid fact, you have to provide evidence to prove it.

i agree though that the council have done more than most over the years for the lemon tree and couldn't continue to fund it when it was just losing money.

  3. crowdsurfing 4 times at the symposium gig before being told off for being too big. spoilsports! symposium tearing a big hole in the roof that night was pretty funny as well.

    various idlewild gigs were amazing.

    juice.

    the glory days of fudge.

    bonnie prince billy.

playing there with dedalus and kartta. everytime a pleasure.

alasdair roberts set as part of rootin aboot a couple of years ago. total brilliance from start to finish.

phil kay calling my fiance a bar fairy as she stupidly got up and literally skipped to the toilet during his set.

ed byrne making me laugh harder than anyone else, ever.

  4. It's worth trying to save even if it isn't under the same management/structure.. it could resurface as a combination as a commercially viable venue encompasing a separate council funded arts programme which would pay hire to the venue. Myabe it was poorly managed but it's worth saving what it was in essence, an arts organisation wich was a landmark in Aberdeen culture.

I have a job interview this afternoon maxi, if the lemon tree was saved in some capacity that doesn't mean i'd have a job there. i'm just not letting complacency set in yet when there's a chance to try to stage a worthwhile protest for Aberdeen.

how you going to persuade businesses to invest money into a venture which has failed? what's going to happen differently should you raise the money? i know this sounds really negative but i just want to make sure you have an answer. call it devils advocate.

i'd love to see the lemon tree saved but not if it's just going to close again in a year.

  5. how much money did the council cut and when?

the council did not cut any money.

they bailed it out in june with 60k, and they continued to pay the 190k annual grant.

its is impossible to keep throwing more and more public money at them.

Close it, and start again from scratch.

that's what i thought but then becky said "the bottom line is that yesterday the council cut all funding" which seems to go against that. hence my question to try and get some solid facts out.

  6. This is what I can't understand. Call me a sceptic but I wonder if anyone on the board has other interests ie property developing.

Hi, btw, I'm new here. If it wasn't for the Lemon Tree closure, I place I love and will sorely miss, I wouldn't have found this place. It's quite good, depending on how friendly you all are I might stay.

welcome, as with most forums there are a few bad seeds but stick with it and you'll be fine. take most of what you read with a pinch of salt. :)

  7. That is just one example of the completely inaacurate reporting by the press and sly and underhand way in which the council have handled this.

Two very important points have been missed. The council's ONLY offer was a short term loan of 250k on the basis that each of the 10 board members personally put up a guarantee of 25k from their own pockets. The council simply did not make the reported second offer and the one that they did make was untennable

ok, so obviously there's more going on here than was first supposed. can anyone explain the exact figures and process that occurred in the run up to the decision to go into voluntary liquidation? how much money did the council cut and when? how did that affect the amount of profit the lemon tree was making? would it have made a difference?

obivously there's a lot of strong feelings about this and the majority of relatively negative comments are based on disappointment rather than anything else i'm sure.

  8. Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

Dave get the hell outta there!

Nothing is sacred! Aberdeen is f**ked

Its only a couple of venues away from turning into Dundee.

Thank the great horned one (Hen) you still have the tunnels.

Man thats a frickin' disaster. I loved playing there more than anywhere else (except Drakes).

The sound system was so good even Solaris sound brilliant there.

Saw Fugazi, The Wedding Present, Julian Cope, John Martyn, Drugstore & so many more great acts there that weren't "big" enough for the music hall.

On the positive side I guess the Tunnels & Moshulu will probably benefit but stll that sucks the big one.

that bit about dundee made me giggle. :D

  9. I cant believe everyone's being so negative and petty.

is there anything positive to say about the event? it's sad that the lemon tree is closed, it really will be missed and i never had a bad time playing there and saw some brilliant gigs but it was a business and was a poorly run one at that. it couldn't keep pishing money away particularly as it was subsidised by the council. hopefully something will take it's place. perhaps even someone will take it over and make it work.

i do geniunely feel sorry for the staff though and hope they manage to get something sorted out for christmas.

  10. they shouldn't have had to bail them out. to be honest if it was running at a loss year and year out then it had to close. the council can't bail it out every couple of years. i can't see it reopening and being the same. if someone does take it over then they won't be able to have a similar range of acts playing and they'll have to run some more commercial nights.

  11. i've given it yet another tweak. i've lightened the font colour a touch and got rid of some dead space so you shouldn't have scroll bars appearing that lead you to nothing. switched the lead images in my portfolio around as well as a few folk suggested i wasn't leading with my strongest image(even though i really like that winter gardens shot if no-one else does).

good thing web design isn't my job, too much hassle!
