  1. Looking good, Dave!

The website has a sort pf early 4AD feel to it, which you know I'm going to appreciate.

    One major criticism:

    Not enough pictures of me.

I think that's really holding you back.

Also, that nudie picture of you in the shower was something I never wanted to see.

    Other than that, corking stuff!

that picture is only in the members only subscription part of the website ;)

now that you mention it the flower is kinda 4ad isn't it? cool.

i've changed the layout of the links a bit to try and make it less confusing. i've left the bio bit in the top right because i didn't want it with the main body of links. does that work?

  2. Isn't the money being spent on materials/etc to actually install the thing at our borders, as opposed to the money going into someone's pocket?

Actually, I do have one criticism of it - I don't like the way that Gaelic is in a smaller font than the rest. It should have equal prominence - but from a design point of view, I guess there's nothing wrong with it.

don't be daft. gaelic shouldn't be given the same prominence as english on a sign like that. barely anyone speaks the language! it should be on the sign for sure but to say that it should be as big as english is ridiculous.

hopefully on the aberdeen sign it will be in doric rather than gaelic.

and yes i know the money is mainly being spent on materials, i'm not an idiot.

  3. You can't just say 'I was a big Britpop fan', then choose 2 bands at random to dislike, makes no sense.

If I recall correctly Suede pre-dated the whole Britpop era by some years, as did Blur, it really kicked off under that designation with the emergence of Oasis, those 2 bands just got dragged into it by way of being British, guitar based bands....and of course teh Blur vs. Oasis debacle.

    yes i can, and i did. :)

I loved bands of a similar ilk to Shed Seven and lapped up an inordinate amount of pish bands at the time but just couldn't get into Shed Seven. The only other band like that was Suede. I hate when people bandy about the word 'random' seemingly at random. There was nothing random about me choosing those two bands particularly as this whole thread is about Shed Seven. That's about as unrandom as you can get. The Suede reference was thrown in there to show that Shed Seven weren't an isolated case.

I'm not going to get into an argument about who was Britpop and who wasn't because that's just ridiculous.

  4. Change the font colour on your bio (and the links for that matter), it's far too close to the background colour. I'd also try and get everything to fit on the front page instead of scrolling down so much.

what's your resolution? i hardly have to scroll down at all to see everything. i know what you mean though, i shall have a look tomorrow.

it's also hard to find a font colour that doesn't look too garish. that's why i like the dark grey on the light grey.

  5. What's wrong with it? We don't need an overly flashly "modern" slogan that'll be out of date within a few months, and what's more, it's what Scotland should be about - a sensible, modern democracy with aspirations of independence within a few years. We're not overly cutting edge, but we are proud of our country and what's a better way to do it than to simply welcome them in a simple, effective way?

it's the way they're spinning it as a 'slogan' which grates i think. if they'd changed it to that a bit sooner instead of doing a study into it and spending over a 100 grand on the damned thing then it would all be ok.

  6. Nice and easy to access. Loads quickly...which is good.

The b+w flower image on the main page seriously kicks ass. It's a different take/perspective of a flower. Nice one.

Im going be harsh with the wedding shot (oh oh, here we go). Selective colour died a couple of years ago and get the groom to do something with his hands i.e. not hanging by his side.

Did I mention that flower shot? Oh yeah I did....

Your work is getting really good....

    Hogisbald:up:

*edit* I just realised that I hardly mentioned your site. Ach well, I can't help it, Im obsessed with photos!

yea i know the selective colour thing is a bit old fashioned, i just did it as a practice one to be honest and i think it works for this shot. i hate doing selective colour at work but unfortunately it still sells really well, particularly shots of small babies in black and white with blue eyes. ach weel. but aye, that wedding was a wee while ago and i think i'd do a better job of directing them now.

thanks hog, means a lot coming from a talented pro such as yourself! (do i get a discount on my wedding for that one? :p )

  7. David Officer Photography

feedback welcome! i'd like to make the front page look better but my web design skills are limited and i don't think i'm really getting the most out of dreamweaver. i think i should go on a course or something.

anyway, i've stripped all the images that were there before and replaced them with just the one gallery of some of my best photo's which should be easier to update and keep fresh. there's also a link there to a blog i've started(i know, i'm about 5 years too late on that one) as well as my flickr page and the kartta myspace. i've also updated the biography section.

  8. Welcome to Scotland!

    *sigh*

BBC NEWS | Scotland | New Scots tourism slogan unveiled

i wasn't a big fan of the best small country in the world but i do think this is a wasted opportunity and indeed a waste of money. How they can try and spin this as a vibrant simple message that was well researched is beyond me.

what would you lot have at our airports to welcome folks?

i think they could have had messages in local dialects so in the North East they could have Welcome to Scotland, fit like? in Glasgow they could have Welcome to Scotland, get it up ye!

  9. as alan has ventured into the territory that we all feared to tread with jimmy shand i'll pipe up with the corries. a huge influence on bonnie prince billy no less and although i don't own any of their albums i think their influence should be recognised in this list :)

and i can't believe i forgot the proclaimers. who are still brilliant.
