  1. run a pedal into you rrecording machine without an amp.

That's pure pre-amp. Similar technique used for The Beautiful People - Marilyn Manson and Territorial Pissings - Nirvana.

Persoanlly I think it's a shite sound. Impossible to do live I reckon and very body-less. Suppose it works on the recording, but think how good it could have sounded with a decent sound!

  2. Yeah, that's why I changed from a 300W 4x12" to a 60W 1x12" cab. Get the speaker sounding like it's tearing itself apart. Which it probably is! But then, isn't that what distortion is, harmonic destruction?

So if anyone wants to buy a 4x12" cab, 250.

  3. the pot controls the level of the attenuation of the master volume circuit.

I'e there is a dial on the front of the attenuator which controls level of attenuation.

Just if we're going to nitpick......

Writing that made me feel faintly simian there.

  4. I don't run it inline. there was a full stop there I tell ya!

I use it between the amp and the speaker cabinet.

    What is an attenuator?

Basically an attenuator is like a energy soak....

With an all valve amp you can get a form of distortion from running it at very high volumes. It's called power tube saturation. However when you run the amp that high it's incredibly loud and is almost unusable (unless you're playing stadiums!). The attenuator soaks up some fo the power and allows you to get the sound without the crazy volumes.

    Hope that clears it up.

  5. One thing I've found is that when you're playing live (especially if there's two guitars) that you might think your amp sounds a bit shit or weird or something, but in the whole band context, it works.

Just the way it is I suppose.

Yeah, imported a Weber MASS (www.webervst.com). Cost me 120 for the 50W version with a 4/8 Ohm switch plus all taxes and duties. Cheaper than your average Marshall Powerbrake.

On that note, I saw a notice inside of Stage 2000 in Dundee where somebody was selling a Powerbrake for 100. Can't remember the phone number though.

  7. I run a marshall JMP at full pre-amp vol and full master vol through the low input. (using an attenuator)

    Bass - 10, Mids - 10, Treb - 4. Presence - 5.

Notch the guitar volume down to 3/4 for a slightly dirty sound then step on the guv'nor or the shred master for rock or metal accordingly. I also use a danelectro mini EQ as a solo boost.

    To hear it in action:

I use a cleaner tone now for the quieter bits.

I find this sound works well to give a solid rythtymtheythm (can't spell that word for shit) sound, nice and heavy and a passable tone for lead work.

Using a Yamaha SG double humbucker guitar

  8. electrohill (can't remember address). A shop in London, good for BOSS pedals.

www.coda-music.co.uk. Really good for higher end guitars like Gibsons and Fenders. A lot of good special offers

www.watfordvalves.com - best place for valves + speakers (by a long way, seriously cheap, v high quality). I buy valves all the time there, and just bought a Celestion Vintage 30 for 60, delivered next day

ebay. There's guy who always sells epiphones at good prices. From a music shop in England. Can't remember name though.

  9. Matamps are what a lot of stoner rock bands uses, so I reckon the low-end should be there.

I reckon the Matamp. They're a bit differetn from normal, and are hand-built. Probably very high quality of workmanship.

I'm pretty sure if you search you can find articles done on them from Guitarist magazine, or maybe it was total guitar?

    Craig

  10. really depends how you want to sound. The JTM 600 doesn't have a lot of gain. Basically think Thin Lizzy?

The Matamps are meant to be good amps. That one is one channel though I think.... Stick a big muff or Rat in front of though. Even a Guv'Nor. But then the same with the Marshall. Just use a pedal for solos.

What type of music do you play?

Do you need two channels (remember a pedal through a valve amp sounds shit hot - much better than through a SS amp)

If teh matamp is a lower wattage you won't need to make it as loud to get the power tube distortion

  11. He says he likes valve amps...

they're easily available for under 300

Another option is a Laney LC15. Relativly low powered but easily loud enough to be giggable when wired up to your cabinet. (i used to gig with a 20W 1x12" combo and never had a lack of volume problem) Clean headroom might be though.

About 170 new. Make sure and go for the reverb version as it has an output for an extension cab, the normal version doesn't.

Plus, it weighs almost nothing so you can cart it over to your pal's on the bus for a practice easily.

They make a TT20 head too. Might be in your price range.

Maybe you just need another cabinet? What about a marshall 2x12". They're not too expensive.

  12. http://www.musicalinstrumentsales.co.uk/gitamps.html

there are a few Fender amps on there.

One thing though, watch out for Twins. They are really fucking loud and you need to crank them up above number 4 or something to get good distortion with your pedals. Some have 1/4 power switches which drop them to 25W. I know the grey face plate ones with red buttons do.

It's a lot more useable then.

The matamp headfor sale there (V14, 300) might be what you're looking for. I know a lot of Stoner rock bands use them, so I doubt they're too trebley. Very similar to Orange amps, (hand)made by the same guy. www.matamp.co.uk I think.

  13. Try an old fender head (bassman, bandmaster, showman?)

    They're a little expensive though.

Fender make a lot of all-valve 4x10" combos though.

You could afford one if you sold the Laney and the cab.

One of them with a big muff, Rat or tubescreamer wouldn't sound like a marshall either since you don't like the sound of them.

    Just an idea.

  14. I use a Danelectro fish'n'chips EQ for a solo boost.

Also a compresser pedal is useful. Adds more sustain, can give a volume boost, can makes the notes run together better and boost the level of ones yuo fluff or not hit hard enough.

The Marshall one is 45 and also comes with a "Craig's" reccomendation.

  15. I'd go for D'Addrio's personally. Been using them for ages. Switched to Ernie Balls and they got mega dirty after a week (not even playing much) and snapped the high E in the first gig I played with them. Normally takes me a lot longer to snap strings than that. Plus the coloured ends look good on my guitar as they are visible at the back of the bridge.
