"THE INDEPENDENTS is a unique, original, exciting, infectious, possessed new band. They put the "fun" back in funeral. Great songs, punk meets ska meets surf meets the Ramones, with a touch of Elvis. They hail from "Hell" Florence, South Carolina. Daniel Rey and myself just produced 14 songs. The record sounds great! There is nobody like them!" - JOEY RAMONE (former manager of THE INDEPENDENTS)

Formed in the early 90's by Evil Presley and Willy B, The Independents was born out of the frustration of music being stereo typed and just plain fucking boring. Willy and Evil both loved all music, from Conway Twitty to Iron Maiden, from The Ramones to Etta James and the Specials. Both loved horror and sci fi movies and wanted to find some way to include it in their music. Evil started writing lyrics that told horror tales while Willy kept the guitar in one hand and gave all of the world the finger with the other.

After a few years and a few members, they signed a small indie deal with Rockduster Records and recorded their first album "In For The Kill". It was during this time that Evil met and befriended the bass player for the legendary Ramones, CJ Ramone. CJ got the Independents on a few opening dates of the Ramones' Acid Eaters tour. On their way to the first show with the Independents, Joey Ramone listened to some of the Independents demos given to him by CJ. He really dug what he heard and within minutes of arriving to the venue was introduced to the guys. After the shows, Joey made an offer the guys could not refuse. He told them he wanted to manage the band.

The ghouls hit the road non-stop on tours with such bands as THE RAMONES and VOODOO GLOW SKULLS and an early BLINK 182 tour, also RANCID, REEL BIG FISH, and GREEN DAY

Joey and the guys finally decided to sit down and record the next full length album "Back From The Grave". They once again called on Daniel Rey to co-produce with Joey. They went into the studio for two weeks, then took a break to appear in the mystery horror spoof film, "FINAL RINSE" directed by ROBERT TUCKER. Then they hit the road again.

After the passing of their manager, friend, and mentor Joey Ramone, the band set off on a full US tour with the MISFITS. They cut it short for time to mourn. Now the guys have their heads and hearts together. Before Joey passed he and the band put the "Unholy Living Dead" EP and the album "Back From The Grave"out themselves.

In 2002, The Independents found themselves back out on the road for US tours with the WORLD FRIENDSHIP SOCIETY and the QUEERS, EYELINERS and BRIEFS, as well as their own headlining tours. In early 2003, they released "Live From Murder Beach" on AMP Records and recorded a few songs for comps on such labels as Cleopatra , Fast Music and Peephole records. Now they are about to release the "Full Moon Arise" EP/CD ROM on Fast Music. Work has already started on their next full length CD. The non stop marathon touring is about to start up again, so beware. The Independents are going to play the music they want, when, where, and how they want.....

We are sharing a van with these motherfuckers so they better like constant Slayer and paedo jokes. The Independents will brighten your lives and we will rock like bastards on heat. We just tore Moray and Lewis new assholes and Aberdeen is next. Our new - and PERMANENT!!! - bassist Diamond Dave will be hitting Drake's for the first time so come along and make him feel welcome. Lock up your daughters and poppers first, mind.

Glad to hear the ex - Van Halen singer has finally found a new, permanent band

I'm bringing all the Slayer albums with me on Thursday, Andrew, so choose your weapon. Oh, and the new (rock n fuckin roll) Zeke album.

See all you retches there.

Well another storming night at Drakes that I forgot to review so here goes nothing:

Infection - still finding their feet I believe. Ramones cover to close was pretty storming (if a bit straightforward) but the rest of the set was a little lacklustre and nervous. I think that's only their 2nd gig but someone correct me if I'm wrong. Nae doubt with more gigs and experience they'll get better :)

Contra - bit of a strange night for Contra methinks. Technical problems ahoy and not as good as last time I saw them I don't think but matters out of their control was the main factor in that I'd think. Interesting use of 2 Unlimited as an intro track as well :p

Dangerfields - nearly didn't make it thanks to transport problems but another storming set from the 'Fields. One of the most consistently excellent live acts that I've seen and highly recommended to anyone who likes a bit of raucous rock and roll.

The Independents - a shame that a lot of people left (presumably for last buses etc. as they were on quite late on in the night) before they played but a great time was had by all who stayed I think (except for Dave of course who'd passed out by then). Much dancing and fun was had and they seemed like a nice bunch of guys as well. I'd gladly head along to see them if I got another chance.

Thanks to Drakes for once again putting on a rather spiffing bill indeed :D

some not so good news now.....

unfortunately the Dangerfields & The Independents were involved in a pretty bad road accident with their van yesterday. about 50 miles out of newcastle on their way to bradford their van flipped in icy conditions at 80mph. Willy Independent has a broken arm, the driver is alive but is seriously injured, and the van was totalled. fortunately none of the dangerfields were injured but awful all the same....

The Independents have since flown home, and The Dangerfields are continuing the tour in a hired car...they are really lucky to be alive, and in the words of Andrew Griswold 'they live to rock another day.....'!

im just glad it wasnt any worse than it was...

thoughts to you all, shaz, jim & all at drakes xxxxx
