aberdeen-MUSIC? not a chance...

is it just me or does aberdeen-music seem very much a rock orientated website?

About 90% of the discussion focusses on rock music and it seems to be only on rare occasions that artists from outwith those sort of styles get much attention. I understand that the discussions on the forums can only focus on what the users want to talk about but it seems that the whole site and the way it is promoted seems to favour rock music above all else.

for example, that picture in the top right of the site... every single person in that is from a rock band. Also the only clubs I see advertised are ones that specialise (mainly) in rock music.

What's my point? well, perhaps the name "aberdeen-music.com" is slightly misleading for people who aren't familiar with the website already? so maybe the site could take it's gaze off rock music and possibly feature some discussion/news not related to our "thriving" rock scene and instead feature some other form of music? or perhaps a name change so that "aberdeen-music" could be used by a website that intended to feature bands other than the rock'n'roll massive?

thoughts?

Go and see Killa Kela...

Yes I agree to an extent but kids who are into music generally get into rock music and thus few venture to the dark realms of other genres.

believe me, I'd love to go see killa kela but I won't be here when it's on.

I know kids get into rock music before anything else usually, it's a teenage rebellion thing, but the only way to turn them onto other styles is for people with more experience to introduce different styles to them. Exactly the sort of thing this site should be doing IMHO. I'm not saying no-one should listen to rock music, I have my favs in the genre too, but I think our music scene is done a disservice by not turning people onto the thousands of different artists out there because they are never given an oppurtunity to hear or hear about them.

who knows, maybe if people around here were introduced to some more interesting bands then the aberdeen gig schedules wouldn't read like a who's who of 10th rate punk/ska/metal/grind-wank-emo-prostate-core and instead clubs and bars might start making more effort to get some really good underground acts from other genre's?

Hmm, Ross, I know where you're coming from there, but I tend to think that the "kids" generally get into whatever the media serves up for their fodder,

As part of the "media" it is up to websites and content providers to provide, therefore Mr Mike does have a point,

Other (non rock) genres can also be very enlightening, as well as having their darker realms...:)

Any one here do RnB, ??? :):D:)

Okay mateys' date=' which bands/groups in Aberdeen should the kids be opening their ears to? Most live bands I can think of are Rock oriented in some sense of the word.

List the people and the places.[/quote']

how are they supposed to tell you if they never get told? that's my point right there. There are bands that have nothing to do with rock music but they get no exposure here at all so no one gets a chance to check them out.

good example might be DJ Format, 25thSep at Bar Pivo... As close to a dead cert for a good gig as you can get but no mention of it here as far as I can tell. Is it just a coincidence that Format is a hip-hop DJ, I'm not too sure.

Asking people to name all the bands and places is just being childish but if that's how you wanna prove your point then be my guest. At the end of the day what I said stands, say what you want but a website that focuses almost solely on rock music and appears to make little effort to promote the other scenes in the city shouldn't really be calling itself Aberdeen-music should it?

Is that our fault tho??

If bands choose not to promote themselves as much as the rest do then of course your not going to hear about them. If people are so bothered about it then do something about it.

You say that the 25ht will be good, so why not put a post about it and tell people about it instead of moaning about it??

Its only rock orientated because thats the majority of people who post on here or have a band on here.

Do something about it people, promote other nights, tell the people about whats going on dont sit there and think about how "rock" orientated Abdn Music is.

Well no one involved with Pivo (as far as I can tell) is really that involved on here so maybe that's one reason. I loved 'Music For The Mature B-Boy' and went to see him and Abdominal at the Lemon Tree when they played there and would definitely make the effort to pop along to Pivo for a second dose of fun hip hop antics. You got any links to anything with details or how'd you find out?

Maybe it's just not been that well advertised? I still can't really find anything on the Internet about said gig. Ross Morrison's been active in promoting Killa Kela and I've known that gig's been happening for ages.

At the end of the day I guess you can't choose what people want to listen to or talk about. Start threads about say the aforementioned DJ Format gig or an album you've been nodding your head to for weeks and there's always going to be at least one person interested more than likely. :)

Threads like this are kinda pointless. You could always try PMing people and chatting about music other than rock - you could try me for instance :p

yea i'd agree with what a few people have said here and just post about it. there are a few folks on here that are into non-rock music and the best way to get people to listen is to give them recommendations to check out. folks hate to be lectured about how lame their music taste is so give them credit that they can think for themselves and recommend upcoming shows or new albums. perhaps keep an eye out for threads that mention some bands that you can link to more non-rock music i.e a thread which mentions mr bungle(as a few have recently) could be linked to rahzel as mike patton and rahzel performed together at reading/leeds so people might be interested in that. there needs to be a reason for them to listen to it ya see, most folks are lazy and won't go out of their way to listen to things they know nothing about. their attitude(and fair enough, i'm not having a go) is why take the risk on listening to something that might be shit when i know i already like stuff like this. if you can only afford one cd a month then you're just not going to experiment so much.

perhaps you could post some links to mp3's you've been digging recently. or start a thread about what everyones favourite new album is and give some recommendations. it's much more productive than just sitting at your computer saying "you guys just like rock music, you're all so close minded, why does no one talk about hip hop...." etc etc. i realise that might sound a bit arsey on my part but you have to realise that's how threads like this one come across to the majority of the kids on here who listen to punk and ska. and slagging the music they do listen to isn't going to make them listen to what you have to say either is it?

word.

I wasn't trying to make a point by asking people to offer their suggestions, I was giving people the opportunity to change the trend. So while I was being constructive and forward looking, you were being insulting and argumentative. If that's the road YOU want to take, be MY guest.

I agree on the fact that this site is mainly about rock, punk, metal whatever music.

But I do feel that if you post about another style of music that people should still give it a read and post their views.

I was suprised at my "Aberdeen Hip Hop ??" thread as its had some intrest which I did not expect.

I also think that the site is this way because Aberdeen has a STRONG rock scene, compared to the rap, DnB, RnB etc.......

Its allot more active and open minded than other sites of its kind.

Agree ?

(oh and can someone give me some sets at their gigs ? I rap, and will mix with any other type of music. So if you have any sets I ca do LET ME KNOW !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! lol)

well I'll deal with the likes of you first...

1st point was that most people on here couldn't tell you about what was going on (other than rock gigs) because no one was telling them.

secondly (and it may have been a misinterpretation)

"List the people and the places."

that gives me the impression of you asking to know all the non rock gigs in aberdeen which blatantly I am not going to know about. still, an arguement isn't what I made this post for so as far as I'm concerned you can think what ever the fuck you want.

My main point was not that it's pissing me off that there's no mention of other music styles (hell I dont even live in aberdeen most of the time) but more that I find it a tad odd that the site should be called "aberdeen-music" when really a name like "aberdeen-rockmusic" or "we're-fae-the-'deen-'n-we-love-rock.com" or something like that might suit it better. still at least I know there's some people around here that might respond to any threads I might open in future about something other than the new darkness album or whatever is the flavour of the month in kerrang.

just realised how arsey that last bit sounds. like I said I'm not looking for a fight, it was meant as a bit of tongue in cheek humour.

Why do you think I was talking to you specifically? I wasn't. How very narcissistic of you.

I find it a tad odd that the site should be called "aberdeen-music" when really a name like "aberdeen-rockmusic" or "we're-fae-the-'deen-'n-we-love-rock.com" or something like that might suit it better.

Or "aberdeen-music-and-mr-mike-the-pedantic-wanker.com"

Although I like that one' date=' when it comes to urls, catchier/simpler is better.

If you want me to get back to your original post and actually directly challenge you on that, here you are:

for example, that picture in the top right of the site... every single person in that is from a rock band. Also the only clubs I see advertised are ones that specialise (mainly) in rock music.

Every single person in the photo is from a rock band? *sigh* It's only a photo. It doesn't really matter but I'm sure it could be changed at some point. As for the clubs, those who ask for a forum get one. If other clubs asked they'd get. Blame the clubs, not the site.

so maybe the site could take it's gaze off rock music and possibly feature some discussion/news not related to our "thriving" rock scene and instead feature some other form of music?

No-one is preventing this. It only takes some people to do it.

or perhaps a name change so that "aberdeen-music" could be used by a website that intended to feature bands other than the rock'n'roll massive?

But *this* site is already for ABERDEEEN based music (the music scene of aberdeen, scotland) and has no particular desire to focus solely on rock music as far as I'm aware. Unlike the interim government of Iraq it does not require to us to 'recruit' people from every 'tribe' in order to make it appear credible. Aberdeen-music.com is an organic creation and those who join it are free to discuss whatever musical events they choose. They are also free not to join it and many non-rock artists have exercised that freedom. Calling it aberdeen-rockmusic.com would be a waste of 40 and wholly incorrect.

I don't see why Neil would want to pander to a half-assed ignorant idea like you've just suggested as it would take time, effort and money and accomplish absolutely nothing.

seeing as you've taken such a long time finding lots of bits from my previous posts to pick up on then i can only commend on your time wasting skills. like I said, think whatever the fuck you want, I didn't come here to argue with you.

a site you may want to check out for info on other types of music in Aberdeen (prob more RnB and Dance) is www.belmont-street.com

As for letting people on here know more about other genres i would reconmend, as others have said, start a thread about it. If there is a night or gig happening that you know about mention it, if people are into it, they will probably show up. Also if you get the chance to talk to either the organisers or the artists themselves, direct them here and get them to sign up and post, if there is enough demand i'm sure Neil would create a new board for the artists or the genre.
