[Jan 12, 2013] LAIKA COME HOME 002: [ ] | KITCHEN CYNICS ORCHESTRA | MARK RENNIE |... (Aberdeen)

Recommended Posts

Here we go again!

Laika Come Home proudly presents our second bi-monthly event. Something a little different this time; an evening of drone, improv and noise rock to coerce you out of your post-festive slump. Start 2013 loudly:

[ ] : Experimental noise rock duo Alastair and Chris make riffy, fuzzy, groove laden tracks with plenty of low end and technical, frenzied drums. A plethora of effects pedals, furiously flashy and fast fills and visceral energy combine to create an explosively relentless and memorable live experien

ce. The Clockwork Horsemen return to bring their rapturous thunder to Cellar, and we can't wait! For fans of Tool, Lightning Bolt and Porcupine Tree.

Kitchen Cynics Orchestra: "Astral overdrive with blissed out synth float". Local legend Alan Davidson teams up with his ensemble for a third outing as Kitchen Cynics Orchestra. Expect layered guitars, delay loops and a host of other instruments (theremin, psaltery, bowed bass and zither have previously featured) to navigate a route of unknown trajectory. This is improv; anything can happen!

Mark Rennie: Artist Mark Rennie specialises in fantastically dark, bleak, chill-inducing imagery inspired by the darker elements of folklore and mythology. Anatomically imposing images where bright, faceless pits of eyes burn out from animal hoods on human forms against a backdrop of eerie forests and industrial towers. With his solo drone project, Mark creates an appropriately intense, brooding and lush drone-driven soundtrack to accompany his artwork.

Daemons: Stonehaven-based musician David Officer uses some clever laptop tinkering and impressive manipulations of organic, field-recorded sound to create sprawling abstract electronica which often metamorphosises into doomy, bass and beat-driven chaos. Countryfile meets Aphex Twin.

Looking forward to seeing you there! xxx

Aye, once again, huge thanks to everybody for coming down. Thought Daemons and Mark Rennie were really great. Good beats from Dave during the latter half of the set, and the bass-ier bits made the floor shake in a terrifying/excellent fashion.

Mark's set was something pretty special indeed, slight technical hitch aside (good recovery though), it was brilliantly tense and the climactic end was fantastic. Great slow build and use of loops. Playing through the house that tone built too (Orange 6x12!!).

I was having a total mare with my guitar during our KCO set, so was a little frustrated, it just would not stay in tune! I think Alan and Jan made up for it though, and I just abandoned it, left it on a drone and went for the theremin, so that was fun anyway!

[ ] were absolutely on fire, totally killed it. Such a raucous end to the evening and great charisma, these guys don't know how to have a bad gig. Superb. Great to see everyone so into it as well. Turned round and the venue was about 6 or 7 rows deep, felt so packed. Realised afterwards that we'd managed to get 67 people through the door, that plus bands made it feel really cosy, wonderful atmosphere.

Cheers to Ewan for coming down too, got myself some tasty patches. Looking forward to seeing what 2013 brings in terms of new releases from Black Lake.
