I don't like the build quality of that camera, and it's discontinued. The current model is the FinePix 6500FD. The image quality is really good however.

Digital SLR's have shot right down in price, so if you're thinking about getting one - you can pick one up now for about £400 starting price for a decent DSLR.

which compared to the s5600 at 140ish its a no brainer....

Its a decent camera for getting into digital, i'd be inclined to budget for a couple of spare batteries because thats the first thing that disappears when they discontinue a camera.

I don't like the build quality of that camera,

Its build quality is easily the best of the small Fujis & considerably better than its predecessors (the 5500 was truly kack). I have one, I don't give cameras an easy life & it has held-up well - as good as my Nikons IMO. Indeed, for a lot of my general stuff, it does the job just as well, less intrusively & the menu-navigation is a lot better thought-out than Nikon's too. Image quality is excellent & the RAW images are actually pretty good. Unless you are going for effect, there won't be much need to do a lot of software afterwork on them.

About the only minor niggles are the lack of a flash connector, manual focus is a pig & the macro mode is not very macro but its low-light performance is excellent & unless you need the interchangability or high MP-count of a modern DSLR, this camera is an absolute steal at current prices.

Batteries are standard AA-size. I use Nimh rechargables & usually carry 2 spare sets, you will get decent sized XD-cards a lot cheaper online - at Amazon in particular.

Plenty of my snaps taken with one here - http://www.flickr.com/photos/pogofish/ Reduced to 1024x768. Images off the camera at standard JPEG resolution are 2592x1944, RAW is 3648x2736.

As a camera to get going, it would do the job. You dont need an slr to start off with. As long as your camera lets you muck about with shutter speeds, iso settings and F-stops you can experiment with the different effects.

If I was starting out I would actually buy a manual film camera but hey that is old fashioned.

Also, get Photoshop. It doesnt have to be the full version. LE is great for starting out.

Go get a sense of homour....I think woolworths stock them.

a sense of homour? perhaps Woolworths also stock dictionaries next to their other, more specialist goods?

to kind of answer your question Chris; I've got the older version of that camera (bought it when I started uni) and it's not bad. Kinda depends what you need it for though. If it's action shots (which I suspect it might be?) then i'd save your pennies and get a cheap DSLR, there's still quite a time gap between you pushing the button and the photo being taken which will lead to a lot of your photos not actually showing the subject that you want.

if you're just looking for good picture quality with good resolution options and some (definately not all) of the features you'd get from a DSLR then i guess it's a pretty good buy. it does also have the option for you to fit other lenses to it (wide-angle, fisheye, macro etc) but I've never been able to find anywhere that sells them.

definately buy rechargeable batteries for it though.

Hey you and Lynsey could start a club "humorless pedants club"

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ok, my advise is to not even think about this camera....

Save up for a couple of weeks and buy a Nikon D200, and a selection of lenses covering 8mm - 1200mm and nothing slower than f2.8, that'll cover all your needs, but remember to update it all every 6mths, you will of course require 10 x 4gig memory cards to capture a days shooting in raw mode.... sorted...

The above is not meant to be taken seriously

Hope my spelling is ok this time...but please dont feel the need to point out if it isnt...because I dont give a shit8-)

No offence mate but if you're going to have a go at other folk's spelling at least learn how to spell yourself as it lessens the sarcasm somewhat..........

The fact that you're the only one who appears to find you amusing should probably indicate where the humour problem lies.

For goodness sake.....he didnt read the whole of my post and in a slightly sarcastic manner I pointed this out to him, it wasnt meant to offend or mock, it was a fucking joke....get over it.....sheeeeesh!!

It might also be worth having a look at the Panasonic FZ7 camera, the basic specs are:

6 megapixels

12 x optical zoom

Manual, aperture and shutter control

Optical image stabiliser

Other features that stand out for me on this camera are the Leica optics and excellent battery life. It runs on a lithium-ion battery as opposed to AA's.

If I remember correctly, we (Jessops) currently sell it for 250 but I'm sure you could find it cheaper online. If so, we match internet prices now so I would def consider this camera as a contender to the Fuji. I hope this helps.

P.S, I apologise for my atrocious spelling.

A truly excellent camera, great image quality, excellent lens/zoom range & the low light/stabiliser & macro are splendid - I had a look at the version with the proper manual focus ring before I got the Fuji. At that time it was just outside my price range.

Just to be awkward tho, I thought it might be a bit fragile but then I do have a bit of history with Panasonic. When I worked for a video production company a while back, we had lots of Panasonic kit & such was the rate at which bits broke, I was soon on first name terms with most of Panasonic's UK warehouse staff in my continual quest for near unobtainable spare parts!

A quick google turns-up one place selling them at £189, again, at that price, an absolute bargan! :)
