P.u.M.a.J.a.W. (aka John Wills and Pinkie Maclure)

Fence Collective refugees Pumajaw (John Wills and Pinkie Maclure) combine

outstanding vocals with hypnotic guitar, concertina, lyre and pagan rhythms

to create a sound which has already earned them a fearsome live reputation

and produced 2 albums in 2 years. John Wills has been a professional

musician for 19 years consistently releasing records as well as producing

albums and singles for Creation Records and Beggars Banquet artists.

Pinkie Maclure released her first solo album in 1985 and since then has

recorded four albums and three singles for One Little Indian records and

Beggars Banquet records, amongst others. She has also collaborated on

various projects with artists including PJ Harvey on The Little Scratches

album (Spleen) and alongside Robert Wyatt, Lee Renaldo and Stereolab on The

16 Hiakus album (Sigmatropic) for Thirsty Ear Records. Wills and Maclure

have released the following albums. Memorial Crossing (Liquid Records 2000)

received much critical acclaim from press in the U.K. and America and

resulted in a live BBC Radio Three broadcast from The Edinburgh Festival as

well as a live BBC TV Scotland broadcast. The album was voted in the BBC

Radio three best of 2000 and also for best cover of a song by listeners to

the Mixing It programme. MTV also used a track from the album for their

Real World show. This Day and Age (Ghost Train 2003) was released under

the name Lumen. The album was made with a grant from The Scottish Arts

Council and was promoted by tours in the U.K. and Greece, again to great

acclaim. A Small Piece of Afterwards (Fence Records 2004) More twisted

folkadelica recorded for King Creosotes Fence collective. Cats Cradle

(Trefingle 2005) made The Wire magazines office ambience chart and received

great press acclaim. BBC Radio Scotland included Pinkie and John in their

documentary Music From the Kingdom about the music of Fife. Their latest

project is called PuMaJaW, which is an abbreviation of their names and under

this name have released a new album called Becoming Pumajaw which includes

seething versions of 2 traditional songs The Holly King and Rosemary

Lane, the beautiful Jacques Brel ballad a Chanson des Vieux Amants plus 7

new songs. Unique, yet with universal appeal, their sound draws comparison

to Tunng, The Velvet Underground, and Pentangle.

"Pinkie Maclure's extraordinary dark, smoky vocals, combined with partner

John Wills sonic wreckage, put this duo at the top of the decidedly rickety

psych-folk tower of song, while preserving their own sense of ambient

timelessness. Songlines

"The Scottish songstress with the disarmingly beautiful voice - a kind of

anglophone Juliette Grco -- is back with this superb set. Redolent with

folk and jazz and John Wills' eerie production, she positively bewitches

with her haunting sincerity.- Kevin Le Gendre Marie Claire

'Timeless, extraordinary, a potent musical chemistry.' Mike Barnes The Wire

Adrian Crowley

Adrian Crowley calls Ireland home and his quiet folksy music reflects the

short gray days of Ireland perfectly. Reference points include Portishead,

Bill Callahan from Smog, Low, Red House Painters, Sandy Denny, Tim Buckley,

Nick Drake, the emotional beauty of Van Morrisons Astral Weeks, The Fence

Collective's finest authors and the early exquisite charm of Belle and

Sebastian. With such an array of reference points it is clear something

special and unique is apparent. There is no agenda to his music apart for

simple and beautiful perfection. He has toured with Hood, Damon and Naomi,

James Yorkston and the Athletes, Adem, King Creosote and others and his

fourth album is awaiting release.

up in Wetherby, West Yorkshire and to cut a long story short he now performs

music under the name Gareth S Brown. He has been a long term member of

Domino Records band Hood and in his eponymous incarnation he performs alone

as a one piece band. His music sits somewhere between Moondog, Yann Tiersen

and Aphex Twin. His debut album 'Iron Henry' will be available in November

2006.

I'd like to go to this, although I'm having wrong thoughts (in every respect) about going to see Cansei de ser sexy at Moshulu the same night. I'm I right to be wrong?

that will be a good gig, but just check through the blurb & I didn't mention the

ANTICON connection....................

Review of the latest PuMaJaW album............Becoming PuMaJaW

The latest album by Pinkie Maclure and John Wills straddles the old and new UK folk-rock movements. The band refer to their sound as 'folkadelica.' Maclure is blessed with a deeply resonant voice, as dark as the underside of a leaf; she can hold her own against other mistresses of duskiness such as Sandy Denny, June Tabor, or Christine Collister. However, Maclure utilizes her voice differently, wielding her voice as another instrument in the precious mix, swooping when you least expect her to, crying out at unexpected times, repeating lyrics in a loop as if she were possessed. Yet none of these vocal acrobatics push Maclure beyond her range or into discordance; she is assured, and deeply shamanic.

Wills' contributions are sympathetic to Maclure's voice and they create open and spare music with magical shadows. Wills' guitar playing is never flashy, but he can provide a good freakout, as on the traditional "The Holly King" where lovely acoustic strumming gives way to some pure electric psychedelia. Pumajaw excel in highlighting the drone of their tunes, evident on their perfect version of "Rosemary Lane." In itself, the trance-like aura that pervades Becoming Pumajaw makes listening a hypnotic experience.

Lyrically, Pumajaw are fascinating. The last track, "Outside It Blows," is the most darkly experimental song on the album. It sounds like a fleeting memory: Maclure's voice whisks around, occasionally looped in the background, while Wills' strings make you feel as if you're descending into a well. "Outside it blows/How many like us in the world?/How many worlds without wires?/The dawn is such/ A fickle fiend/With its deadly devices/It's such a cruel world that hypnotizes us." Whew! Becoming Pumajaw's songs are like so many gems strung together.

For all of the haunting skill shown on Becoming Pumajaw, Wills and Maclure do not come off as showboating grandstanders. This is remarkably ego-less music, the very blood and guts of emotion; human and true to the psychedelic spirit. Becoming Pumajaw is one of my favorite records of the year thus far. - Lee Blackstone

No student discount on this specific event though - so no 'double discount' I'm afraid.

The students have had some good deals lately and will continue to do so - we just thought we would give the mailing list a bit of a treat as well......

ps - you should come say hello, Graeme is always wondering who you are
