glastonbury coverage

Did the BBC coverage of Primal Scream at Glastonbury show them being booed by the crowd?

According to todays Guardian, Bobby Gillespie showed yet again why he is one of the most annoying and idiotic front men in music, through his berating of the Glastonbury crowd. I dont expect anything better from an imbecile who usually dedicates the song, Swastika Eyes to anyone that opposes the State of Israel.

He announces, "We're a punk rock band and you're a bunch of fucking hippies", says "fuck you" to any Kylie fans in the audience, and accuses everyone of being complacent cattle. The only way he could have caused more offence would have been by wheeling on an effigy of Michael Eavis and setting fire to it.

What makes this darkly thrilling as opposed to embarrassingly petulant is the sheer force of their set. There have been few moments this weekend more gripping than Swastika Eyes and the climactic Movin' On Up. Even then, however, Gillespie manages to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Bassist Mani starts up a Stone Roses bass line and Gillespie shouts, "Do you want to hear the Stone Roses?" To the crowd's enthusiastic reply, he responds, "Well you should have been here 15 years ago, you fucking lazy bastards."

Finally, a security guard escorts him off stage, but not before he's thrown his microphone into the crowd to a chorus of boos. I get the sneaking feeling this might be Primal Scream's last Glastonbury appearance.

bobby gillespie was on fire. it was amazing to watch. the stone roses comment was comedy genius and it was nice to see a band not swelling their egos with false cheers and pandering to the crowd. they did play a storming greatest hits set mind you :)

Supposedly the biggest festival in the world so why having watched the BBC coverage did it seem like there were only about a dozen bands played it? Too many repeats of performances, limited or no coverage of other stages and too much inane drivel and sycophantic Glastonbury backslapping between the presenters.

Thought Brian Wlson was pretty dreadful personally. Sounded like some drunk old dude at a karaoke mumbling his way through Beach Boys songs. The rest of the band fair bailed him out with their harmonies. Legend or not, some people should just let it rest. But then maybe i'm not enough of a fan, because I bought Pet Sounds and thought it was pretty pish. A Beach Boys best of is still class however.

im sorry but i saw their cover song and i cant see how anyone could say they were fantastic. it was the worst thing i have ever seen/heard in a long time.....

I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself? Fucking brilliant cover, is that.

I saw the Stripes at the SECC last year and at Leeds a couple of years before and they are amazing live - They sounded brilliant at Glasto (I saw most of their set) and Jack looks like Satan. they might not be abody's cup of tea, but I think they are fantastic. for the record, I think Jack has a great voice and plays better guitar than most give him credit for - like an old bluesman with punk rock fury. Meg can't play drums, but the simplicity compliments Jack's songs. They also sound better live than on record.

There, that's why I say there were fantastic.

couldnt agree with you more' date=' fatboy slim has turned into an embarrasing uncle at a wedding...... must be a midlife crisis.

last night was a disgrace, someone tell the bbc that not everyone loves coldplay - they showed just four new order songs and dedicated nearly two hours to coldplay. though chas n dave acoustic almost made up for it :)[/quote']

I fully agree with every fucking word of that! If I had the facility I'd scene point you for that! Good work, fella!

There is a marked difference between a group swelling their ego with false cheers by telling the crowd that theyre the best crowd they have ever played to and a group being downright rude to large quantities of people. I dont understand why they would want to play Glastonbury if they dislike it and the people who attend it so considerably.

Bobby Gillespies joke about the Stone Roses may have been funny, but telling Kylie fans to Fuck off was rather insensitive considering Kylies illness.

i didn't see the kylie bit but the bits i saw he was just being bobby gillespie, winding people up. everyone who went to see primal scream should've known what to expect, they are wind up merchants extraordanaire. it was certainly a better performance because of that than when they played t in the park a few years ago and were dull as fuck and barely uttered a word to the crowd.

I only saw one song (I Get Around), but it matched that description perfectly. During the chorus he was completely drowned out by the band, at times he didn't even try, and for the verses, I could barely understand his warbling.

To be perfectly honest, I think it's quite a disturbing sight. It looked like someone had taken some old guy from the nearest old folk's home, dumped him on a stool behind a keyboard, and said "just try to sing what comes up on the autocue".

However, perhaps that song was just a bad example. Bit silly of the Beeb to pick it if it was. Looked like the crowd were absolutely loving it though.

As for the coverage in general - if Donnington and the Leeds/Reading festivals were covered in that much depth, I'd be absolutely ecstatic. A whole channel basically dedicated to Glastonbury for three days - what more could you ask for? Apart from having BBC3 start before 7pm that is...

I actually saw them at T in the park and thought they were rather good. However, if Gillespie came out with the same bile as he did at Glastonbury Im sure it would have tainted my experience of watching them.

Therefore, I think I will just stick to listening to Primal Scream on CD rather than going to see them live in the future. At least with listening to them on CD you can pretend that Bobby Gillespie is not in the band.

Do you have a vocal silencing function on your stereo?

No, but I do have a bass silencing function on my stereo, which I used whilst listening to The Kingdom of My Exile. :D

What I meant originally was that by listening to Primal Scream on CD I could pretend that Gillespie is not the singer. Conversely, I could only listen to tracks he does not sing on or better still, not listen to them at all!
