bryn
I worked it out I can do just over 8 notes pers second on a 2 octave major scale. I know its not fast, just wonderin what anyone else can do...
DIZZY STARR
i can play fast some days and it sounds good but others i sound shit.i personally dont like speed that much i am not a big fan of huge fast heavy metal solos i prefer the more slow but not any easier solos of slash, blackmore, page etc but its just my personal opionon
bryn
fair enough, I like speed when it is used appropriatley, like, some Satriani and Vai is way over the top monotonous soloing - kills any aspect of being impressive. Vai is better because his music is good background music. Satriani just plays hard rock riffs and solos.
DIZZY STARR
i agree vai is the better of the two but i think you can only listen to him for so long before it gets to repetetive and when some songs last over 8 minutes they get boring but classics like eugenes trick bag will live foreverand i dont dislike speed its good but only if people can cary it off like hammett he is a master of speed and can bring real emotion and feeling into his solos aswell as playing like lightning
bryn
agreed. also, For the Love of God, in my opinion, the greatest guitar song ever. It just shows the extent of virtuoso playing and the capabilities of guitar, plus its amazing the way it perfectly builds and builds tension before peaking etc etc.

Tav
I dunno the list concludes with Mr Steve Morse who is the alternate picking wizard. You know the top ten is fast when features in at the bottom.
Guest operator zero
plus remember that's just conventional picking - if we counted pick tapping Joe Satriani raced up to 23 notes per second i think?
Mouse
Well all I can say is I'm quite far off the level of John Petrucci picking.......damn!
bryn
There is a guy (who claims to be the fastest in the world) called Marcus Paus. He plays at I think 30 NPS, check out his band Mr Cucumer, its pretty insane.
Leckie Gilman
dunno about leads but i could give anyone a butt whupping at palm muted noodles/eric melvin style schtuff.
bryn
People always say there is no point in getting fast because it kills your guitar playing and that there is no point in being able to play fast. I think speed should just be used to enhance a solo, not be the basis of it, but getting fast is about improving your technique and becoming a better musician, not just about the literal sense, if you get my drift.... *Craig_HexPen*
that list is a load of balls...they arent the fastest players thats just the most amount of notes per second ever released on a record...i can play 24 tapping with 6 fingers and i (obviasly) cant play faster than vai...
