  13. SNAFU COMEDY CLUB :: BILL DEWAR, GORDON ALEXANDER, JIM PARK, LUCY OLDHAM & ANDREW LEARMONTH (MC) // TUESDAY 16TH MARCH // SNAFU Bill Dewar began performing stand up comedy in 1993 whilst at Stirling University on an Open University summer school. The next gigs were to be in '94, at the Comedy Stop in Edinburgh's Grassmarket. Concurrently, Bill entered and reached the semi finals in both the BBC Open Mic' award and the Gilded Balloon's "So You Think You're Funny?" Bill played at The Comedy Stop on a fortnightly basis until his involvement as a co-founder of The Stand Comedy Club in Edinburgh in early '95. Bill won the Paisley Arts Festival competition "Do You Think You're Funny?" in June '95 and went on to support Harry Hill in Paisley. 1995 also saw Bill's first performances at the Edinburgh Fringe (at The Stand) and The Gilded Balloon. In early '98 Bill and fellow stand up Brian Hennigan developed the idea of a sketch based fringe show, revolving around the history and culture of Scotland. After much debate, and fervent last-minute rewrites, the show was christened The Useless Guide to Scotland. It went on to sell out for the majority of it's fringe runs in '98,'99, '00 and '01 as well as touring all over Scotland. The show received a significant number of good reviews and was considered by BBC Scotland for development. The show was featured in the Australian Broadcasting Corporation TV show 'Correspondent' (Scottish Devolution special) and on Radio 4, Talk Radio, Radio Scotland (Brian Morton show & Fred MacAulay show), Scot FM, as well as BBC Scotland's (TV) 'Beat Room' Also in 1998 Bill developed the World of Comedy Quiz Show which played every week at The Stand Comedy Club in Edinburgh for two years. In 2001, Bill began to scale down his appearances due to work commitments outside the comedy industry. Having recently departed from his job, Bill began to write new material and perform more widely again. He can be seen at a wide variety of venues across Scotland and the North of England. 17. SNAFU COMEDY CLUB :: JOHN GILLICK, RAB BROWN, KALONDE, CHRIS SCOULAR & ED PATRICK (MC) // TUESDAY 2ND MARCH // SNAFU John Gillick is one of the most experienced and accomplished stand-up comedians in Scotland today. And it shows. A former member of Glasgow-based comedy collective, The Funny Farm, John was there at the start of the renaissance of Scottish comedy and has been beating a path for other comics to follow ever since. There's no substitute for experience and the best kind of stand-up is one who has experience both as a comedian and life in general. John Gillick is a fine example. He's been an art student, a tax officer and an encyclopaedia salesman. He has appeared in films, guested on BBC Radio Scotland's 'Off The Ball' and 'Velvet Cabaret' as well as headlining clubs and theatres throughout the UK. With his composed on-stage presence, his breadth of experience on and off the stage gives him a wealth of material spanning all aspects of modern day living. John has an uncanny knack of finding a common bond with any audience, relating to them on a more personal level than you would have thought possible. As a result, his wry observations on life are never less than hysterical, with fantastic one-liners, hilarious real-life characters and stories so bizarre that they could only be true. In addition to his vast experience on the UK comedy circuit, John is a regular headliner at the Best of Scottish Comedy shows during the Edinburgh Fringe, and has also appeared in his own highly acclaimed solo shows. No stranger to critical acclaim, John Gillick has been described as sublime - reminiscent of a less sardonic Arnold Brown Scotsman and compared to Dylan Moran with his deceptively precise musings List. the best kind of stand-up ... could make you laugh just reading the shinty results Scotsman quality writing is matched with edgy, acerbic delivery The List ----- Advance - 5 - Club Snafu | Aberdeen Nightclub Box Office General Admission - 5 Students - 4 Snafu Members - 3 Doors 7.30PM-11PM Show Starts 8pm SNAFU SNAFU COMEDY CLUB
