  1. Aberdeen is in dire need of a <100 capacity venue. :(

Cellar is spot on for 3-4 piece bands, but noise issues seem to mess everything up. Good for quieter stuff, but nothing vaguely loud. The best thing though is that it's free to hire.

Neuk was pretty good. Roomy, but like the article says it's getting shut down. I was in the Tilted Wig the other day and that is an option, but it's quite awkward with a narrow walkway then quite a tall stage at the end that takes up quite a lot of room.

Couple of other places that could be used, but for some reason aren't. Reckon downstairs in Drummonds could work out quite well or the middle floor in Korova.

  2. I heard they were putting on gigs again a while back and I think it went through (possibly Dweller and Ablach?), but haven't heard a peep since. Anybody know what the deal is?

Also, any contact information for the place would be grand.

    Thanks in advance.

  3. Hopefully wintersun at long last? I hear the faceless are gonna be releasing some new aswell.

Full album from the jezebels would be great.

Devin's deconstruction is gonna be the main event for me though.

    This.

  4. The quote "far flung depths of the north-east" makes my balls shrivel up inside me and is pretty much the sole reason I prefer not to have a bio on a band page. I might quote some press or something, but writing your own makes me nauseus. I think being modest (as previously stated) about the band, the members and it's output can do as much, if not more good for you than the third-person, self-hyping garbage that a lot of bands come out with.

Citation of influences has spoilt as many bands as it has gotten me into. So many times I've dug a band and then realised they've just totally ripped off one of their influences. That's my problem, but I don't see why you should spoonfeed a listener like they are some sort of technically inept moron. They are on your page so, by default, they should have a rough idea of what your about. - especially back when Myspace was real popular. Even if they don't know what you're about, why do they need to know? I don't understand this. Even if it is, by definition, ignorance. You said it in your first post, let the music do the talking. Obviously this presents a bit of a cyclical argument.

Ultimately, I think the demise of Myspace and the move toward using the likes of Bandcamp and Soundcloud in connection with Facebook proves the point I am quite badly trying to make. Clean page - album art, and tunes - no shitty bio, no 'top mates', no sluts trying to get you to comment on their photos.

  5. Reaper is a good place to start man. Do some reading on it, it'll really help.

    I didn't realise I actually posted that.

Cool. I'll do some reading. Sequel is justso nice and simple, so simple it doesn't do half the stuff it should though. :( I'll go through the manual etc.

Are there any VSTs that'll make my guitar sound synthy or some sort of midi converter for guitar? Also, the process of re-amping. How does it work?

  6. Autotune as a correction tool has been discussed and I wholeheartedly agree that if you aren't bound by any time constraints take it again until it's spot on.

But I also don't have anything against people using it in copious amounts to make them sound like Beyonc. It saves the hassle of learning how to sing as much as the pocket pod saves the hassle of miking up a guitar cab and they achieve the desired effect. When it comes down to a live setting, you will suffer the concequences and people will discover that you really are a gish singer.

Back on topic: REAPER is really really grey and confuses my brain. What's the moest user friendly jargonbusting DAW out there?

  7. Autotune is unfortunately a necessary evil sometimes, especially if you subscribe to the view that you can't polish a turd, but you CAN roll it in glitter.

I use Melodyne though, because the graphical mode in Antares is far too fiddly. It's great from a compositional point of view as well. It's great if there's a great take with one stray note because you only correct the parts you want to correct.

Agree with this. Another benefit of using a computer DAW too is that if it is just one phrase out of a verse that is pap you can create a new track and drop yourself in for that phrase. Much much more fiddly on a multitracker, for those that are a bit more pernickity.

  8. Does anyone here admit to using autotune?

There's a tuning VST included with Reaper. I turned it on the other day and it doesn't do a bad job, seems to smooth out the vocal without being noticable. But I still left it off the end mix as it felt like cheating.

There was autotune on my voice for the CW recordings. When I have access to one I probably would where it was needed.

So you can use external VSTs with Reaper too?

  9. Two of these

Audio Technica AT2020 Studio Condenser Microphone | DV247

    25509_p.jpg @ 90 each

    Two SHURE SM57's @90 each

You can use some crappy karaoke mics on your toms, unless you're recording a drummer who plays a lot of tribal stuff there are only going to be the odd time the toms are needed, make a good recording of the toms using the condesor mics and a spot mic with the 57 then use drumagog or similar to replace the badly recorded karaoke mic toms. TBH...if you place your condensor mics to record the whole kit as opposed to as overheads, you won't even need a mic on the toms, or on the snare...the fewer the mics the better, especially for demos...look out for a free Transient Designer plugin that you can google, it should be able to craft the kick and snare channels into tighter sounding hits that will cut through more and just them to emphasise what was already recorded by the condensors...

Wuite like the idea of a couple of audio technicas or SP B1s to geta grounding with. I assume what they lack in features they make up for in sound compared with your likes of Thomann's T bone, Superlux, Behringer and other budget gear?

I've got a Shure I'm gonna use for the snare and I'm gonna just get some crappy kick mic for the meantime, just so I can get used to miking techniques and actually having some kick presence in the mix if I fuck up the overheads!
