  1. Your maths is spot on....sadly this means that 16th notes at 300bpm is bullshit too. 1200 strokes per min is virtually impossible with the feet.

I saw Virgil Donati' date=' who is one of the world's best exponents of double bass drumming doing a Premier clinic in Aberdeen a few years ago....he played 16th with the feet at ever-increasing tempi, until he couldnt go any faster.....his best was about 220bpm...and he's a freak of nature.

16ths at 220 is, 880 strokes per minute.....which believe me, is breakneck speed.

If the tempo is set to 300bpm, realistically 8th notes is about the only subdivision you'll be able to play evenly....even triplets would be 900 strokes/min ie. very, very, very, very, very difficult.[/quote']

Yeah, I'll admit 300 is daft. The guy who played over there abouts used doublestrokes, which of course is slightly different. Although I don't want to get onto WFD stuff. And, I do believe you, listening to extreme metal, I'm very familiar with hand and feet speed. Donati is fast, but not the fastest. He is however one of the best players this planet has currently.

However, at the moment a few of the more famous guys in extreme metal are sitting at around 250bpm or a smidgeon faster. Derek Roddy being one of these guys, check him out. He's a monster player all round, and can groove like a bastard. In fact Virgil stated in a recent interview his admiration of Roddy's singles.

I'd also like to state I'm certainly not all about speed, in fact I'm not anywhere near the upwards of 200bpm singles at the moment. As when discussing a matter like it his it often makes you look like a one-dimensional player.

  2. Many people find the Z-customs to be of a terrible sound quality when played by themselves. Great live, terrible acoustic, or so I've heard. My wrists couldn't handle them either, I find even power crashes a bit too cumbersome and insensitive at times.

To be honest, if you play metal you don't have to use heavy or large hats. 13"s are just as suitable as 15"s. Just try some out and choose; it's the only way really.

However, since we're talking about hats, heavy will give you a very clean bright cutting sound. And many models are on the thick side anyway, therefore Z-Customs/Rudes may well be what you want, I hear the Rude Soundedges are stupidly versatile.

  3. In bad cases it can last a few days. Let this be a lesson and start using high earplugs at gigs or any place with loud music. Not only will the gig sound better but you'll feel better. The foam ones are cheap and very effective. I have used some others and found that in the likes of Moshulu, even they aren't strong enough to avoid ringing ears. Some venues seem to play music far too loud.

    You'll appreciate it long-term.

  4. hahahahaha!! THIS IS ACE! And shit at the same time... although to me it sounds every bit the same as 'REAL' dance music...

I listened to the whole thing.

However' date=' what is that melody that starts at the beginning on piano and is then played through most of the song? ....I think it was on an old Natwest advert or something?

    Top marks.[/quote']

That's the Miami Vice theme. I love it. Crockett's theme by Jan Hammer.

  5. I don't really feel it's fair to justify it as harsh. It evidently ha dto be done.

Read the first half of that letter again, it appears to me as a bit of an emotioal appeal, building a feeling of sorrow for Tarja before talking about how unfair the letter was. It doesn't really explain her side of the story, it doesn't say why Tuomas was wrong or in what way their letter was incorrect, simply that she's upset and that they said mean things.

It just comes across as a bit of a "feel sorry for me," letter to me. Only a third actually talks about the split directly.

  6. If it's really small, then go with the sawing off a length from the end and filing or the triangle method you suggested. I'd be weary of filling it with an unknown glue, it's probably just kill the resonance.

On a sidenote, I noticed at the gig I saw you play you had a very nice Sound Formula Dark ride of some-sort. Where did you come by that?

  7. It all depends on the crack. If it's a tiny one near the edge you can hack saw off the crack plus a few mm extra and file the edge. You can cut a small triangular slice out of it and yet again file the edge, or you can drill. When drilling it you should always drill a fair bit away from both ends of the crack; the eye cannot see the ends of it, and drilling that bit further along will make sure you've got the end.

If it's fucked you might as well give one of these a shot to see how it goes.

You could always turn it into part of a stack or something.

  8. I know someone who has a DTX express 2 for sale' date=' the bass drum trigger is a bit fucked because the guy was doing double pedal thrash but it plays well and is in good nick. 200

I'm very interested in this. I've sent you a P.M.

    Cheers.
