Adding to the untaxed cars on roads band wagon, if the "road" was on private ground, i.e. a private housing estate, then technically its not a "pubilc road" so you can park what ever you want on it.  Its the same argument the council uses for not gritting/snow plowing private housing estates in winter.

As mentioned its all to do with the frequency responces the amp is designed for.  A guitar amp is usually voiced to give a greater mid range responce where as a PA or keyboard amp is set for a more flat range responce to accuratly reproduce the signal of the input without adding its own "tone" to the sound. 

If you turn back the clock on amplifier development you'll find back in the early days generally an amp was just a generic amplifier and was used to amplify whatever you could plug into it.  Manufacturers developed the different amps as musicians found they wanted to improve their sounds in more specific directions as the more generic amps didn't cut it. 

From a manufacturing point of view if they can sell a Guitar, Bass, Keyboard and PA amp they can make more money than if they just sell an "amp".  80's Peaveys are a good example of a manufacturer making the most of this as they had a set of generic power amps that they would just stick a guitar/bass or keyboard pre amp infront of and then mount in the appropriately styled cab.

I'm still on the look out for a working tape deck.  Even a loan of one would be welcome.  I need to convert a bunch of old tape recordings my folks made of me, bro and sis playing pieces when we were young from tape to digital.  I'll probably just bid for one off Ebay but checking here first.

 

 

I would like to reiterate conditions that should apply for all freecycles - if you find you no longer want an item or no longer have use for it you must repost here or on another freecycle site.  Selling items on is unacceptable and goes against the spirit of the process. 

I've an old stereo separate tape deck you could have.  Pretty sure it worked fine last time it was used but the plug was removed for something else.  I'll have a look see if I have a spare plug for it and get some more details. 

As has been said it's all down to personal preference.  From my expericence it's a "shite" valve amp will always sound better than a "shite" solid state amp but it's also down to how well you know how to use the amp. i.e. how to get the right tone out of it for the right scenario.

For example in a local rehearsal room there is often the pick of a Marshall JCM900 combo and a Marshall Valvestate half stack.  If I plug in to the JCM900 I know I have to roll off the treble and keep the mids at about 12 o'clock and add a little more bass.  If I use the valvestate and apply the same tone setting the amp sounds dull an lifeless but if I apply 2/3's treble, 3/4mids and roll off the bass a bit I get a nice tone to cutting into the mix.  Both amps are equally usable but if the building was on fire and I could only rescue one amp I'd go with the 900.

As mentioned Roland and Session amps make great solid state amps.  Tech 21 also do a good one, I'll be taking mine to the grave.

I used to have a Kay classical guitar, was a total plank, even after all the years of use the neck edges could still open your hand up like only a cheap piece of splintery wood can!  The neck glue gave up and the back fell off in the end.  Man I miss that guitar.....

Fat Ol' Sun - the amp's a Laney GH100L, bought very cheap as it's not working. Starts up fine, but starts to cut out as soon as volume gets high. I thought a tube swap, but apparently the previous owner tried this already (twice), so it will likely be some other issue. Due to not being sure what's going on with it, I thought a very experienced repair guy would be a good call, to save costly misdiagnosis (don't wanna buy more tubes just to be back to square one AND have to take it back in again). Any ideas much appreciated though???

I may have have been a previous owner of that very amp if it was the one for sale on the site a few weeks ago.  I had Bruce Millers replace a valve holder in it once apon a time as it would give crazy feedback.  They're ace amps, basically a supercharged JCM 800.

Actually cant believe there is'nt someone who's qualified and willing to turn it into a little business up here, it seems rediculous with the amount of amps there must be..........i heard theres an amp tech in one of the music shops in Dundee ( even typing this im shaking my head, cos i dont know which one ) who is half decent, but to be fair it could be some bozo who just "messes about with amps".

 

Dont want to keep harping on about this man, cos fair enough....hes a pain to get hold of, but i drove down to Dennis 6 times with different amps and they all came back perfect, like new. Just saying, your amps your amp.

Its the curse of Aberdeen though, if you have the qualifications to do this then you might as well go work offshore for megabucks rather than scrape out you own existence fixing broken AVT's for skint musicians.

Fault finding is where you really learn the ins and outs man, stick at and you learn a heap.  Your Wah will have a signal input and an output and a ground going to the WAH circuit board, if you connect the in to the + of the input jack and the out to the + of the out and leave the ground wire connected to ground your wah will be "on" all the time, i.e. no bypass switch at all, if it works as a wah like that at least you know the wah circuit still works.  Then you can start messing with the bypass switch again. 

does it still WAH if you un-mod it or just connect the WAH signal in and out to the in and out jacks (i.e hard wire the pedal on and bypass your switch)? 

were you following a pre made circuit diagram or just making it up as you go along?

First thing I do if I make a balls up would be to draw the circuit I have created from scratch, i.e. dont copy the circuit diagram but take your wah and draw the signal path you have just wired up.  Often I find what I "think" I've wired up and the reality are different.

If that fails I would undo my work untill I get a working wah and then try and get the mod to work again.

Have to say the random dude at the bus stop who shouted to the bus driver to wait as I was just about to miss the number 3 on Guild Street yesterday was Ace-ic.  Part of me wants to believe it was actually an appearance of CoolThinker in the flesh, helping the mortal souls go about their daily chores on Aberdeen's public transport infrastructure.

I'm just finishing off this loop pedal, it's evolved over time from a simple A/B to this, the final part to add is a blend control.

It gives 4 options:

Bypass all - In signal straight to out jack

Loop 1 - signal sent out to loop 1 and returns to output jack

Loop 2 - signal sent to loop 2 and returns to output jack

Loop 1 + Loop 2 - signal sent to loop 1 then loop to then output.

I'm working on adding the blend control so in 1+2 mode you can mix the balance of the two loops.

I currently run my wah >fuzz >distortion in loop 1 and delay > trem in 2.  I can now switch between clean delay and or trem to distortion in one button push.  Pretty chuffed it all works as its all ideas pulled from different pedals, schmatics from the web and those awesome ideas you get when you're on the bog! 

+2 for the Seagate drives though I've heard from the IT folks at work that excessive load and download to the passport drives kills them pretty quick (like loading and unloading large GB's of data almost daily for 6months).  I've used mine for large file transfer but mainly just music storage so the upload/downloading isn't too excessive, I've had no issues in the +2years I've had it and its been happy getting dropped and chucked in my bag at the end of the day.
