  1. I look forward to hearing the new album live as the tracks (Love of Richard Nixon, Empty Souls, Glasnost and Solitude Sometimes Is) are all pretty good, with the exception of the last on there, and at least they're being bold and seemingly doing something different on Life Blood unlike Know Your Enemy which just tried to rehash past glories (although I wouldn't consider Generation Terrorists a glory, fuckin GNR rubbish it is). The Holy Bible for 30 year olds according to Nicky Wire. At least they'll always be interesting and obviously they'll do some classics too (they better not do Faster bloody acoustic again!!) and they are formidable live.

  2. He doesn't want this thread to turn into a huge argument' date=' probably because his own argument doesn't have enough substance and didn't really say anything anyway.

So lets just leave it at that eh?[/quote']

No it's because it's really just a matter of opinion and my opinion of Hendrix is not gonna change cos what someone else says and nor will i change their opinion which means it would just really drag on without conclusion.

  3. If you take that attitude then every artist who ever played an instrument who are absolutely brilliant at playing are all show-offs' date=' that would mean that all the great jazz players in history like Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, Herbie Hancock, John Coltrane, Dizzy Gillespie, Charles Mingus, Thelonious Monk and Ornette Coleman weren't playing from their hearts in your eyes.

I have never seen more passion in Hendrix's guitar playing than i have seen or heard in anyone else's guitar playing, the guy was truly trying to take guitar playing to a level that no-one else was willing to, every guitar player in history who are considered the best all tip their cap to Hendrix because of what he did.

Hendrix just loved playing music and thats all that mattered when he was playing, he couldn't help it if people admired what he did, he wasn't trying to make any kind of statement to the world either because he wasn't obligated to, he just played his fucking heart out to anyone who wanted to listen and made it look effortless when the fact was that he was improvising and experimenting all the time with the notes he was playing in the way a jazz player like Miles Davis or John Coltrane did with their instruments.[/quote']

I will never like Hendrix and I don't want this thread to turn into a huge arguement (as so many threads that i post in do) so we'll leave at that.

  4. Why does a band have to say something for their music to have substance?

Its music' date=' most of Beethoven's and Mozart's music didn't have any words, a lot of Miles Davis' and John Coltrane's jazz records had no words, but they probably have more substance than a lot of music thats around today.

Ultimately though, this argument comes down to personal taste and not about the subject of innovation so in this respect, its got no legs.[/quote']

I'm not saying you need to have words in a song for them to have something to say to you. Godspeed You! Black Emperor are the perfect example. But Hendrix's music is just him showing off, playing up for musos. As panny as it sounds when he plays it doesn't play to your heart. And that is my opinion nothing else.

  5. Hendrix did anything but make music of absolutely no substance' date=' especially where live shows are concerned, he was more innovative than any other guitarist of his generation and nobody dared play the kind of notes he was playing, most people were playing standardised blues rock boogies while Hendrix was taking everything he learned from playing blues guitar and turning it into a sonic one-man guitar symphony, there's so much more to Hendrix than just playing.

Try listening to Electric Ladyland and you will get the jist.

But you're not talking about their music, you're talking about the lifestyles members of those bands led when they were famous.

I would have to agree with you about their lyrics, all Cornell ever seemed to write about was suns and snakes.[/quote']

I don't care how innovative he was as a guitarist his music still has no substance, there's nothing about Hendrix's music which moves you, which makes you feel anything. And my point about their lifestyles is that their music was either about their supposedly outlandish lifestyles or if it wasn't it suffeedr because they didn't actually have anthing to say. If the wrote what was supposed to be love song they only did so because it was the norm there was no strong emotion behind it.

  6. WHAT THE FUCK DO YOU LISTEN TO THEN? BUSTED?! Led Zepp overrated? Jimi Hendrix overrated? Soundgarden' date=' the rest WTF? does your mother dress you or what?! :swearing:[/quote']

Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix and the Stones belong to a thread of revered bands who make shallow music of absolutely no substance. It's too concerned with the peripheral aspects of rock 'n' roll ie drugs, alcohol and meaningless sex. Soundgarden are just so bland and there's nothing innovative or original about them and their lyrics are bullshit.

  7. PM: One thing I'm curious about is the name Pretty Girls Make Graves. Are you guys big Smiths fans?

P: DF: It's not really ... one day try and name a band ... it's a very difficult thing ...

It's just as likely to be named after Jack Kerouac's Dharma Bums' date=' the name sounded good.[/quote']

Well, conflicting sources. Dharma Bums? Has that actually got anything to do with them or are you just saying the could easily have named themselves after something else. Coincidentally I'm reading Visions of Cody at the moment.

  8. The day I take anything seriously on the internet is the day I start slaughtering the kiddies I have tied up in the basement. I am merely killing time' date=' and I especially like annoying people such as themselves who claim the crown of "superior taste" You didn't state you would prefer anything, you said Million Dead would probably be better, thus implying that you don't really like them either. You are not going to the gig right? Then why try and shove your opinions on a topic obviously going to be dominated by people who would love to go. You are like a freakin' missionary desperate to convert. I didn't overreact to anything, and there was certainly nothing that would fall into the category of criticism in your original post. Oh by the way, seeing as you seem to lack the intelligence to understand any degree of subtlty, what i mean here is that saying a band sucks and then doing an Arnie and calling them girly, doesn't qualify as criticism. While you have the right to post anywhere, you probably shouldn't, each time you post it becomes more apparent how much of a pretenious elitist you are.[/quote']

The "superior taste" comment was intended to annoy you and it looks like it worked. By saying Million Dead would probably be better obviously implies that i prefer them and i do like them although i'm not that into them (ie I don't have their album or anything). And I did ponder going to the gig but I've decided Sparta (after having recently listened to Wiretap Scars) are shit. "What i mean here is that saying a band sucks and then doing an Arnie and calling them girly, doesn't qualify as criticism" erm what the fuck? Calling them girly? Doing an Arnie? Please elaborate. And I am certainly not trying to convert anyone and that comment is as irrelevant and nonsensical as the "high moral ground" part of your last post. And saying a band sucks is criticism, it's just not particularly detailed criticism. By the way I consider "pretentious elitist" a compliment. You're very kind.

  9. It wasn't a typo' date=' it was just a mistake over a completely forgetable album. Did you not read what I said, I went to the gigs, and I gave my own views. The first gig with les savy fav and the apes was amazing, mainly due to the other acts granted but it was far more enjoyable than the t in the park wankfest. Also, "Sparta absolutely suck. They're just so workmanlike. Million Dead would probably be better" where in that post did you "just" say that you would prefer the support band. Your comment wasn't needed at all in this thread. Please don't act like you have a moral highground, it's laughable.[/quote']

When I said "Million Dead would probably be better" i was stating that i would prefer the support act. It ain't rocket science. And these forums are for discussion and i had every right to post in this thread as what i said was relevant because it concerned the line-up of one fo the gigs. And what's all this about "moral highground"?? I simply posted an opinion and i'm not acting like i have a moral highground, just that i have a superior taste. You just overreacted to my criticism of Sparta. Stop taking things so seriously.

  10. I must say that Jonny Cash's cover of Hurt is awesome as is his cover version of Personal Jesus and as is Marilyn Manson's cover of that, although it is a tad predictable sounding. My other favourites are probably Manics cover of Train In Vain and Pumpkins cover of Boys Don't Cry as well as William Shatner's cover of Common People.

  11. oh dear you really have ran out of ideas havent you? ginger jokes? come on now. if you KNEW me you'd know that i dont mind the ginger tag...but since you are a moron and boring i have no interest in ever talking with you on the subject. i could say you have a celtic face (but to be honest you have an irish face) im getting a little bored with this now (and so are YOUR friends I hear) so lets just leave it...im always right and you have an irish face

I don't think so, my friends came up with that "daft little fruitbat face" remark and and a Celtic face (being that of a Scottish or Irish person ie someone of Celtic extraction) is the same as an Irish face which I don't mind (I've plenty of Irish blood in my veins). But the fact that you consider looking Irish an insult makes you seem a bit racist. And you were the one who turned this from a discussion about the smoking ban into personal insults so don't tell me i can't say things cos i don't KNOW you and that you're getting bored of it.

  12. ...you look irish (the camp part was just to annoy you :))

No no, i don't get annoyed by being called camp. The legend that is Morrissey is rather camp (and a bit Irish as well). But I don't look anymore Irish than I do Scottish. You could say I have Celtic face. At least I ain't got strawberry-blonde hair. It's just ginger minus the personality.

  13. are you ever to old to enjoy an injection? i wasnt worried' date=' but i wasnt exactly brimming with joy either. "daft little fuitbat face"? does it beat camp irshman face?[/quote']

Camp Irishman face???? I'm not sure it's actual possible to have a camp face and how exactly do i like irish? And you should have been brimming with joy at the prospect of protection from mumps.

  14. The Beatles' date=' quite a few good songs but nowhere near as good or influential as they're credited for, what everyone neglects to notice is that there were LOADS of bands like the Beatles around at the time, they were far from revolutionary, I don't think any of the Beatles would profess to being half as influential as they're claimed to be.

It's true what Tarantino says though, there are two kinds of people Beatles people and Elvis people, and I'm definitelly an Elvis person. You can tell loads about a person from their answer to that question in my opinion.[/quote']

    What about me i'm neither.

  15. haha yeah i saw you at the doctors :) im standing there thinking "this woman is going to ram somthing sharp into my arm' date=' how could this get worse?" then i see you...[/quote']

You didn't say hi. I was so gutted. But then Dixon came in and sat across from me. Hmm...... Anyway you're a bit old for still getting worried about injections aren't you?

Haha, sorry someone just commented to me how you had a "daft little fruitbat face".

  16. well that is the most predictable reply from someone with a mars volta avatar.

I don't go into HIM threads to say how terrible I think the band is. It's even more pathetic when you are obviously so partisan.

Sparta aren't bad' date=' they just aren't erm, very good. Saying that, Deloused in the cremitorium was bloody awful compared to the ep, so mars volta are probably more disappointing, atleast Sparta don't pretend to be pink floyd.[/quote']

Pretend to be Pink Floyd!?!?!?! Bullshit! You're just saying that cos lazy journalists make lazy comparisons to bands like Floyd just cos they've got a "progressive" element. At least The Mars Volta don't pretend to be At the Drive-In. And I was just stating that i thought it would be a line-up in which support act would be better than the main act. The way you talk about being partisan you make it sound like it isn't possible to like both bands. And by the way it's "Comatorium" and don't say it was a typo.

  17. If they're so desperate to ban smoking' date=' why don't they ban it now instead of pussying around, why don't they go ahead and just ban it in bars like they did in Ireland and New York, they both managed to do it pretty efficiently with minimal bollocking around and chatting about it, why not in Britain?

So they can all drive Mercedes and fuck lap dancers with their stupid wages they rape off smokers in taxes?

    Thought so.[/quote']

Because as hard as this may seem to believe Britain is actually a democracy where bills are discussed at length for the sake of greater scrutiny to avoid there being any flaws in the law which may lead to misinterpretation and poor application of it. Your conspiracies are such a joke.
