Jackson Cassidy @ The Tunnels, Thur13April
Andy Mulhern posted a topic in Gigs & Event Announcements
Klub Revolution and Vocoustics Presents: Tickets on Sale in 1-Up and FOPP now! Jackson Cassidy are a new and vibrant song writing duo comprising Scottish passion and Irish sensitivity in the form of ex-Speedway front woman Jill Jackson and Gianna Cassidy. This intimate acoustic show at The Tunnels will be thier debut headline show in Scotland! Both Jill and Gianna are accomplished musicians. Prior to Jackson Cassidy, Jill fronted pop rockers Speedway where she received much acclaim and recognition as well as having two top ten hits. Gianna was a founding member of South Beach after she moved to Glasgow to study music and perform on the singer/songwriter circuit. Jackson Cassidy's individually rich and soulful, if not sometimes, vulnerable voices are perfectly complimented through their resonating harmonies and hypnotic tones creating a sound that is abundant in texture and is often likened to a female Simon and Garfunkel. Says Gianna: "Our love of old style tight harmonies is a main component of our sound. It happens without thinking. It is a natural Jackson Cassidy progression from the moment that we generate the idea, not an after thought. We are melodically driven and our sound is tinged by a mixture of Rock, Folk, Country and Soul influences." Says Jill: "When the whole Speedway thing came to an end I decided to go back to my roots and play the kind of music that I love- Emmylou Harris, Dolly Parton, Shelby Lynne, the Stones and Joni Mitchell. I just wanted to strip the whole sound back and perform some new music. I recorded an acoustic album and after about a year of writing I toured the album supporting Kevin Montgomery (Nashville Singer/Songwriter). A lot of the gigs I performed alone, it was just me and my guitar, It was a great experience. I asked Gianna to join me for some of the tour as I knew she was no longer with her band 'South beach' and I just knew that our voices would really compliment each other's, it was there that we started developing our sound." Kabuki Promotions and Vocoustics Presents Sunday 9th April Cafe Drummonds 3 from 8pm www.christt.com Making a welcome return to Aberdeen is one of England's finest and politically wittiest songwriters, Chris T-T - a man certainly not afraid to keep his opinions to himself. "A national gem of a songwrtier." The Independant With acres of beauty and careful craftsmanship, Chris delivers songs about suicide bombers, war, serial killers, life, death, money and sex which often get members of his audience riled - but its fair to say he has his political comment down to a T-T (The Sunday Times 1/1/06). After finding himself on both the Rough Trade and Drowned in Sound Best Albums of 2005 lists, plus a Top 5 Album of the Year 2003 in The Sunday Times, things look aligned for a very good 2006. "The joy of Flaming Lips and the humanity of Ray Davies. Time Out, Critics' Choice, 2003 "The genius of Chris T-T's songwriting is his ability to humanise even the most outlandish conceits. They seem instead like brilliant ideas that no-one else could've come up with." The Guardian After the appearance of a self-released debut album Beatverse (1999), and so enthralled by this singular talent (MOJO), Snowstorm Records help Chris fund and release the follow-up album Panic attack at Sainsbury's in 2000. Interspersed sessions on Radio1, Xfm, 6Music, Resonance FM and the LBC, Chris slogging his guts out with tours up-and-down the country playing every indie venue and club he could find while inevitably building up a strong cult following. In 2001, the 253 Album appeared and was the first in a trilogy of bittersweet love-letters to the city of London. The critically acclaimed London Is Sinking (2003) was part 2/3 and named Album of the Year in The Sunday Times. "Fantastically intricate masterpieces... utterly indispensable... genius... a modern-day Blake." The Sunday Times, Album of the Year 2003 Capital-centric folk wonder funny, touching and smart NME Two thirds of the way through the a trilogy of deeply personal London tales, and somewhere out of left field comes the overtly political 9 Red Songs, a red menace of post-Bliar acoustic folk protest music. Whether his target is Tony Blair ("Can the heart fall apart when the hard work starts, or was he born without one?"), or the Countryside Alliance ("I've never been a fan of police brutality, but when the huntsman comes a marchin', give him one for me), no one is safe from T-T's sharply honed verbal arrows! With local anti folk support from The Kitchen Cynics and Holy Folks.

Review from Elizabeth at Footstompin.com of last nights gig in Edinburgh! ----- Do try and catch this pair if you can on their current tour. Beautiful playing from both fiddler Jenna Reid and guitar accompanist Kevin last night at Leith FC and much appreciated by the audience. Technically so good, and able to execute a varied and interesting programme which ranged across furious and exciting reels, a Swedish march and an Unst bridal march, and some very beautiful slow airs which included Scott Skinner's Hector the Hero and Willy Hunter's The Love of the Isles. The pair were joined by Shetland fiddler Kevin Henderson (Fiddlers Bid & Boys of the Lough) for the last sets which included the lovely tune 'Michael's Mazurka' - written by Michael Ferrie who was a founder-member of Fiddlers Bid who died at the young age of 21.

Possibly a bit of truth there Chilli, but a little bit harsh too! - and the second sentence doesnt really make sense!? Most aberdeen bands/artists know about GoNorth and should know that its in May and applications go to Dave at the Foyer. "Go Events" website is www.goevents.info and in this months Music News Scotland there is a call for demos and now a thread here discussing it - and prob other places too... Not blanket coverage, but it is there if you look for it an use some initiative ... GoNorth on this forum always seems to end up in a bickering mess! Which is crap!
