Then my alcoholic father in law decides to tell Currys that the machine hasn't been used, even though it has so we're not allowed to use it, despite it being installed and having run the first wash, until it's picked up god knows when before the replacement is delivered on the 8th of December.

I had the opposite, got offered the job the same day as the interview, then heard nothing for two months. Chased up just to be told, "oh we've taken on lots of new people, we're really busy" despite the fact that hospitals have a six month rotation of clinical staff. Then get a call stating that it's urgent I contact them about my references, despite the fact they've sat twiddling their thumbs for two months. On top of that I had to chase them to find out what was going on with my references. On the plus side I took the risk of handing my notice in at the end of last month (not that much of a risk as I knew the reference would be sorted and my current job is due to end at the end of December) and start my new job on the first of December.
