Hehe, good stuff there. I can see me following a similar route through the college / uni system. Were you at aberdeen college? Who was your guitar tutor there if so?

prof lofi - can I just ask, how did you learn your theory? was it a purely solo disciplined effort or did you goto college / uni or something? Just interested, been looking at composition courses.

I totally disagree with this. This is the route to being a boring player. You have ears' date=' you listen to music, you shouldn't need to copy it. Simple as that. I find it harder to believe how by playing other peoples music you think you will be original. You arent 'automatically original' - I'm sure there is a miniscule chance you could sound like someone else. But its, how you say, extremely unlikely, no?

    music theory

Remember we're talking about a piece of wood with strings here no-one has to actually understand what youre playing. Were not stuffy musical snobs twatting on about how there is something more to the soundwaves we create, it either sounds good or it doesnt generally reworked Kirk Hammet cats dont. Anyway, all I'm saying is that I dont think it a good idea to learn other peoples music too closely when trying to have an original style; whereas with language where we copy one another: pressure to fit in etc. Listen and be inspired by your favourite artists, but dont replicate them (unless you're really really really shit at guitar )

Thats bullshit, nearly every rock band ever has gone with the non theoretical approach. 'GOFONES go by what sounds good blah blah; The strokes use theory so theyre shit.' No the strokes probably know bugger all about theory or using their ears, thats why they sound shit and predicatable and boring. Composers use a theoretical approach. I can write music with basslines and guitar lines (which have been tried and tested) without touching an instrument, not by sticking to harmony rules but just hearing the parts in my head. For some reason I find this approach gives you far more articulate and pronounced rythms plus a whole wedding celebration of other musical advantages. In theory, with a couple of books at your side, you could write some insane music, music you wouldnt ever see or realise sitting in your bedroom stuck in a rut.

    advice

With a budget of arouynd 300 - 400 gold pieces, recommend me a synth. My synth knowledge is crap (having never even played one) but any general advice or talk about buying yar first synth or whatever is appreciated. Several people recommend me the Microkorg? Basically want something good quality, yet with limited knowledge - something that... makes cool noises! (for band and loner use) If anyone can just make a recomendation I can then look it up etc. ta,
