  1. Hello

I am setting up a new ska covers band to do private and corporate gigs, and I really need a drummer and keyboardist. We already have horns, singer, bass and guitar sorted. Our first gig is on 4th October so I need someone who is a fast learner and has loads of experience with gigging. I need someone who can listen to the CD and be ready to play to a decent standard and tighten it up with a few rehearsals, then gig.

We would only be gigging about once per month if that, so it wouldn't intrude with other commitments.

    Many thanks

  2. I am somewhat disturbed by the answers on here...

When I was at uni and I was out and if my mates and I were a bit pished I used to try and pimp them out. ie. I used to dare them to snog each other for money. Everyone was so pished that they didn't really care and got it on for a laugh :-) The going rate for snogging a mate was a fiver but that was about five years ago. What with inflation and everything I think the going rate is probably a tenner by now.

  3. Come to our gig; it's ace, but by the way, I'm proper only actually after your cash, so bear that in mind whilst considering my initial statement. How about booking inspired, relevant acts and letting the event sell itself? If you want to support 'the scene in aberdeen', only put on Aberdeen bands. Something which could actually be interesting and not some kind of catch-all lamo's day out.

It's part of my job to promote Feugh Fest. I'm not going to go into details, but my motivations have never been financial. I am quite involved in the music scene both at Uni and at gigs, a lot of the work and performances I do is for free. For me, it's all about the music. Feugh Fest is about getting the best live music there is and bringing it here. I'm not going to say that we will only put on Aberdeen bands as that would make us inflexible, we will try to get whichever bands people say they want. What if one year there were no decent live bands in Aberdeen? I'm not going to pick bands just because they live here. They should get a gig based on merit, pure and simple.

I don't think that putting on bands from different genres and different places is catch-all. The common theme here is that we are aiming to appeal to people who appreciate good live music and great musicianship, and that can come from any place or any genre.

  4. Ok, so that's two negative comments about BNH and Bad Manners, but that is weighted against the dozens of compliments. Not everyone is going to like the same bands and some comments are the complete opposite from others ie. some people want more covers bands to play. It would be helpful to me if you were specific about what you didn't like about them: is it the genre of music you don't like, did you think that their performance wasn't tight enough, etc?

As for trying to spread the word about Feugh, we were in discussions with every single band that was mentioned in posts, but we decided against them in favour of more local acts. That decision has been justified by the comments here. People seem to want less big-names and more local bands.

I would love to hear people's ideas about what you want from Feugh Fest. I am typing up a survey as we speak. The link will be uploaded here and onto the festival blog, myspace, and bebo.

Thank you for all comments, positive and negative. They are all really helpful and will go towards improving things for next year.

  5. Cheers for the feedback, I'm definately taking it all on board, but I have to say that you are alone (so far) in your assessment of the Heavies. I have heard some good stuff about Haight Ashbury and The Lorelei too, though I personally wasn't able to hear much of the bands. Popup really stood out for me.

You are totally right about getting up and coming bands; we have kept slots aside for band comps. We want to support local acts as much as we can, so there will always be opportunities for great local acts to play.

  6. BNH gig all over the world, and at regular intervals. You are right that not many people stayed until the end, but I think it was more about being past people's bed-time than about the bands. We want to be a family-friendly festival so for next year we are toying with the idea of finishing earlier. I think most other fests end at about 10/11pm.

The most positive responses I have had are about the Brand New Heavies, with Bad Manners a close second.

  7. Hey folks

You probably think that I am just going to say this anyway since I am clearly biased, but OMFG the Brand New Heavies were brilliant. I knew they were a really good live band but they surpassed all my expectations. Some of the staff at Feugh were invited to go party with them at the Indig02 in London; I am damn tempted to make that trip, it would be so worth to see them again.

I would recommend that people go see them; they make it look so easy, everyone was dancing like maniacs. I was in the front row dancing away and I lost my voice on Sunday cos I shouting so much :-)

  8. The best places I would say for a young band starting out would be places like Drummonds and The Tunnels who book younger bands for midweek gigs of 3/4 bands all the time. Kilau is a good shout for open mics so is The Globe and The Moorings. There is a new place called The Music Club and that has a nice 'music-y meeting place' kinda feel about it.

The thing I like about Aberdeen is that all the people that are into music all sorta help each other out, well in my experience they have anyway. Just get chatting to people and you will find your feet in no time.

    Best wishes
