  1. from the initial listen i gave it at work i'd say it's very very good indeed, not bought my copy yet though, had to buy a goatsnake album instead this week. it's not as heavy as other neurosis albums, certainly in keeping with the last one(not the jarboe one the last proper neurosis one) in that it's all soundscapes and atmosphere with moments of crushing doom. really tense stuff. i'd heartily recommend it!
  2. i've always considered them post-rock, in that it's a term that means virtually nothing but includes virtually everything that's done on guitar, drum and bass which pushes the ideas and structures of rock music. they are very jazz in places though, and could easily be krautrock. i'm inclined to go with phil and just say a damn fine instrumental band. annoyed i missed them in glasgow two weeks ago.
  3. hehe selfish indeed, but i really really like shellac! a new album would be sweet indeed, anyone want to hazard a guess at who will be the support? my money's on mclusky.
  4. turns out a guy who was steaming ended up breaking the head on it and thought he would take it home and try and fix it(he must have had to unbag the guitar and everything, probably in the presence of the manager who was still there). lucy had phoned both these people yesterday and both had denied knowledge of it's whereabouts, fucking assholes if you ask me. now it's been returned a bit worse for wear but at least it's back. personally, i'd be very wary of billy bundy's after all this jazz(nb: this is my own personal judgement and nothing to do with lucy who still works there and hasn't said anything bad about the place despite all this crap). i tihnk i speak for most people who know lucy when i say to paul that if you knew her you wouldn't think it was a publicity stunt, she's a terrible liar.
  5. november 28th at the liquid rooms. go to www.simbioticstore.com for tickets. i just ordered 3 for myself, it's going to be a blast!
  6. yea i'm sure you could add pelican and stand up guy to the above list
  7. http://www.aberdeen-music.com/forums/showthread.php?t=14622 go there! please note: this is not cross posting, it's merely directing people towards another post in a different board. so um not cross posting. honest guv.
  8. aberdeen's soon to be finest purveyors of post-doom stoner grooves - galaxy of fire - require the services of a drummer and a bass player. also we'd quite like to get a keyboard player/sound manipulator person as well to create atmospheric soundscapes and general fucked up noises. if you would like to be considered for the above positions then please pm me, email me or reply here. for listening ideas think isis, kyuss, neurosis, electric wizard, eyehategod, three stages of pain, godspeed you black emperor, breach, cult of luna, etc etc. but that's just a couple of influences, it doesn't need to sound like that, just that's the inspiration for doing it. doom or be doomed.
  9. that's a lie, you've routinely not played things i've asked for because noone would dance to them. bah.
  10. i found that album to be a bit hit and miss, some ace tracks(staring at the sun for instance) and some tracks that just didn't do it for me(like some of the prolongued barbershop meanderings), really like the sound of it though. the guitars are really threatening the way they've mixed at the back, it's like their stalking the album or something.
  11. aye should be a blast, you can hear youth movie soundtrack strategies on the nomad am compilation available in one up records. look out for the next nomad am release on august the 2nd from politik/dedalus. there is a launch gig on the 31st in the lemon tree and i believe(though need to have this confirmed) both bands may be supporting youth movie soundtrack strategies.
  12. going to see orange goblin in glasgow that night, damnit.
  13. she was amazing! we usually have the radiophonic workshop cd's in stock if anyone wants to pop in and listen to them. some terrifying stuff on them and some totally amazing sounds.
  14. pelican is going to be fucking amazing! been waiting a whole long time for this one!
  15. aye fair enough mate.
  16. yea that's more what i meant as well, they don't sound straight like another band but you can get bits of other bands in their sound, i'd certainly add the flaming lips to that list as well. i think they're great though, and they have got their own sound but the point i was trying to make is that it's nigh on impossible to be totally original these days. EVERYTHING has already been done. one thing i've been really impressed with recently was when someone told me that groups like matmos take things like insect noises and manipulate them into music. i'd heard it being done by people like tribes of neurot(in a very disturbing way) but not the way they do it, where it ends up sounding like a glitchy electro track. that's cool. maybe more people need to experiment with found sounds.
  17. i listened to a naked city album once and it gave me a headache. crazy crazy stuff, that john zorn needs to relax i tells ya. i'd have to go for in a silent way or headunters by herbie hancock. i'm not really clued up on my jazz actually so any tips would be greatly appreciated, i have to say i don't really like any of the totally frantic stuff. much more of a mellow jazz fan. incidentally, anyone a fan of karate? they're kind of indie jazz. i like them a lot.
  18. I've found working in record shops has opened me up to all kinds of stuff i may never have heard. i think the most important thing is just to listen to everything with an open mind and just check things out all the time. oasis got me interested in music and will always hold a special place in my heart(trust me they will make another good album!) as do the likes of the charlatans and the bluetones. then i got into american punk music like nofx and pennywise and from that things started to really kick off, some bands led me to heavier stuff and others led me to more experimental bands like fugazi. mogwai got me interested in bands like godspeed and sigur ros. people introduced me to hip hop and things like company flow and the anticon stuff. when i joined one up i started taking an interest in electronic music like aphex, squarepusher, boards of canada, and bits and pieces here and there. recently my tastes have broadened to include a huge amount of 'country' music and *gasp* some prog, though i'm still scared of listening to rush for fear that i'll like them and yes are still a few steps away. there's not much i won't listen to these days, except generic dance stuff and manufactured pop(though that mcfly know their way round a tune, had it stuck in my head all weekend). haven't listened to techno for many a year or drumnbass. don't really listen to ska-punk much these days either, though i still like sublime. surprised myself by liking grindcore and some black metal(though still haven't gotten round to buying any black metal, one step at a time). also enjoy listening to some ambient stuff now and again to relax.
  19. they were only a wee bit dull, some bits were good. didn't really like the singer much, the guitarist with the sparkly telecaster seemed to be having fun and there was some exciting moments but overall i didn't think they were that great. constantines would've been ace(album of the year so far imo). the violin player was quite cute though
  20. it was taken as it was intended though, it wasn't meant to be too harsh or anything.
  21. good stuff! you'll have a blast down there, glasgow's a great city.
