  1. as a massive weezer fan im actually really pleased they have split

its excruciating watching one of your favourite bands just get shitter and shitter. maladroit was ok but make believe was pure guff.

pinkerton and blue are definitely both im top ten ever though.

  2. if its mostly down to the drum sound then its mostly down to the drum kit itself.

a beefy sound will only be possible if the kit is sounding good itself (may sound obvious but you would be amazed how many people will spend cash on guitar strings etc but totally overlook how the drums sound.)

buy fresh heads and make sure they are played in / stretched before you start recording (or else the sound will change throughout the day)

also listen carefully to the sound of the drums before there are any mics near them and make sure you like the sound of them. beg/borrow/steal a decent set of cymbals too.

if they sound good then its down to the engineer to transfer that to the tape.

  3. i was just there on the sunday (was doing sound for jo mango)

most of the bands i wanted to see were on when i had to work which was a shame.

enjoyed gomez. thought the who were ok but a bit dull. generally i just hate watching bands on the main stage though.

    fo machete were great.

    mr scruff was quite good.

regina spektor ok...think id need to know the songs better though.

quite a good day out...apart from charlotte getting food poisoning from the bloody milkshake stand though :(

  4. dont really know what you mean by a "simple" drum map...are you using logics matrix edit window?

logic express has exsp24 (sample player) which should have gm sounds...load one of these up (audio instrument...i/o...stereo instruments...exsp24) and load a gm drum kit. then create a new object in the arrange window on this channel and double click on it. this should load up the matrix edit (if it doesnt highlight the object and go window...matrix) then draw your pattern in here. i have always found that to be a fairly straightforward way of doing it. sorry if thats too basic for you/you have tried all that already.

  5. Is anyone going?

I think it looks totally ace. What could be more fun than a summer's evening on the banks of rock ness having a dance?

In connection - I am looking for tickets if anyone has any...

  6. yeah onlynik is right...the tape will only ever play back 2 channels in a normal tape deck.

in order to bounce on the 4 track...this is how my old one used to work....

record enable channel 4, and pan all the other channels hard right. this should send the signal from these 3 to channel 4. then press record and play the tune all the way through.

however if this is your final bounce and you arent recording anything else then you will be better to just plug the phono outs (if it has them) or whatever other outputs are available into another tape deck/minidisc player/pc and recording to a 2 track master.

  7. any help with the following would be greatly appreciated....

i have put a wee webpage up on my free ntl webspace, but am having trouble redirecting my domain name to the ntl page. when i go to the direct link http://homepage.ntlworld.com/blahblahblah the page displays no problem.

i own the domain www.iainthomson.co.uk and i have entered my ntl homepage address in the web forwarding section of my domain control panel, yet when i go to the link www.iainthomson.co.uk it still keeps redirecting me to the 123reg homepage(the people i bought the domain from.)

anyone got any ideas?? i am a total novice at this stuff im afraid.

    cheers,

    Iain

  8. how fast is the pc? if you are using the mbox then the soundcard inside the pc surely wont matter as its not being used?

have you tried adjusting the buffer size? often the cause of clicks and pops. think you can do this in the digidesign hw control panel (i think...not particularly familiar with pt stuff.)

  9. i graduated from that course last year.

as far as i remember the audition went as follows...

written theory test/listening test...would advise you to get to grips with the basics of grade 5 theory for this. honestly cant remember what was in the listening test but im sure one of the questions asked what MIDI stands for.

practical audition...just play your best stuff on your chosen instruments...best to show them a varied picture of what you can do. they always like people who can play more than one thing too. im sure you are supposed to be minimum grade 7 or equivalent on your instrument.

they also do this thing where they show you a picture or poem before the audition and then you have to make up a piece based on it.

then they just have a chat with you about the course and music etc. i seem to remember this bit being fairly informal.

theres only one audition in glasgow...im sure you already had to send in a tape?

hope that helps, just ask if theres anything else
