  1. being unshakeably tight as a nun. could do it with eyes shut. strings breaking yet still pulling it off admirably minus dodgy bits etc etc

having a great sound for what they are doing (generally having great gear and knowing how to use it in different types of venue. i.e. pa/non pa/crap pa, big venue/small venue, high roofs etc etc) a great example of this are EYE from dundee, in all the times i have enjoyed them in different venues, i have never been able to fault their sound.

ability, being able to play without bum notes, mutes, dropped beats, off vocals etc etc goes without saying really. macrocosmica were a great example of this

tunes. having the tunes with the character/charisma to win people over/get them into the genre. i.e. punter saying "i hate post rcok/instrumental music, but xxxx were actually fucking excellent at it and i actually enjoyed that"

maybe its being picky having seen a lot of bands/acts in recent years/maybe its being a cynical bastard/maybe im simply bored of the aberdeen music scene/maybe i know absolutely fuck all etc etc

i never really used to look it like that until i started going/seeing to gigs in other cities and im sure there are lots of other things too, but surely this gets the gist of where i am coming from??!?

I've just watched the Edgar Prais do all this 4 nights running, as main support, playing sold out 400 capacity venues all around england.

I've seen them turn 400 people from standing chatting to their mates to watching intently and clapping and whistling after each song. I've seen them get mobbed by people after the show, and I've seen a Liverpudlian turn to his mate and say 'This isn't my kinda thing, but they're fucking good'

They may well not be your 'thing' Maxi, but there is no denying they are an awesome band, neither are they the only band in Aberdeen.

But then, saying that doesn't start a very good flame war does it? :)

  2. Here is how to claim back every single penalty charge you have recieved from your bank in the last 6 years. My mate who sent me this has got back 2.5k so far:

    -----------------------------------------------------------------

The Office of Fair Trading made a direction on the 5

April 2006 stating that (bank or credit card/

agreement) charges for any matter that are over 12

(ie overdraft fees, dd admin charges, missed mortgage

payments, etc pretty much any charges as it happens)

are unlawful and you can get these back. So far

millions of pounds have been refunded - (personally

2,570 from just one bank so far) by using the data

protection act and some standard letters (link below).

You can get charges back from the last 6 years so

handy for any ex-students who still haven't paid off

    any overdraft charges!

    Link to Templates:

Below link for the Data Protection Access Letter:

    http://www.consumeractiongroup.co.uk/forum/bank-templates-library/516-data-protection-act-subject.html

After you get Data Protection Response outlying

    charges:

    http://www.consumeractiongroup.co.uk/forum/bank-templates-library/671-letter-preliminary-approach-repayment.html

You'll get a standard letter back saying no, and so

    you then send this one:

    http://www.consumeractiongroup.co.uk/forum/bank-templates-library/92-letter-before-action-consumer.html

When they try to settle without giving you the full

    amount then use thi sletter:

    http://www.consumeractiongroup.co.uk/forum/bank-templates-library/25716-rejection-settlement-offer.html

Remember though that if you are offered the full

amount requested and it is without further conditions,

    you must accept it.

If conditions are attached to an offer of settlement

in full (for instance, you are required to attend a

meeting, or you are asked to agree not to make further

claims etc) then you are under no obligation to

    accept.

Make the bank aware of the need to withdraw those

    conditions first.

....but eventually they'll give in. At the beginning

they were trying to get people to sign gag orders

shutting them up but slowly a lot of people are doing

    this now.

If you don't believe me check the Office of Fair

    Trading Website:

  3. Errr, loads of people get prescribed loads of dangerous drugs for home consumption. Surely the argument is about wether a junkie is a fit person to be looking after a toddler, not wether methadone should be available for home consumption because one kid drank it.

Should bleach be banned from homes?

  4. It seems unfair to me that the people that can afford not to work during term-time are exempt' date=' whereas the people who have to work during term time aren't, for their holiday earnings.

"There's one law for the rich, another for the poor. In fact, there's several laws for the rich, most of them quite good, they can pick and choose which laws they like..." Peter Cook, 1995[/quote']

It's not that bad actually Ian.

Everyone pays no tax on their first 4,700 or so a year, which works out to be roughly 80 per week. Anyone who works 52 weeks a year therefore pays no tax on the first 80 a week.

If you are a student, and only work in the holidays (Say 3 months a year) you can fill out a form and roll up all that tax free amount into those three months, so you pay no tax on your first 320 over those three months but get no allowance if you work any other time of the year.

The only difference is that if you are a student you are entitled to claim the money there and then, rather than wait til the end of the tax year and claim the money back as a non student would do

  5. I treat live music as an added extra to the bar and nightclub. Ie, all my budgets, cashflows etc include no live music as it's difficult to project exactly how many and how busy gigs will be from month to month.

Therefore, whne we do do shows, the only overhead I include is Jamesy's salary, as all other overheads are covered in the bar and club P&L's. In this sense gigs are profitable overall, (obviously some lose and some gain money)

However, if gigs was all we did, we'd be shut tomorrow.

PS I'm assuming you looked up DF and CPL no?

  6. Jamesy you are a promoter' date=' not an accountant. If the bank balance goes up then you are making money. And if the bank balance goes down... That's how we keep score.

    .

    There's a lesson in there.[/quote']

To be fair to Jamesy, I make him do a profit and loss sheet for each and every gig he puts on either here or in the tunnels, so he knows exactly how much money he makes or loses at each show he does.

  7. I still think we can still take em

Considering the US spend about as much on their military as the rest of the world combined does, it would probably be a fairly fair fight....

Although they have no universal healthcare for their citizens, a massive public debt, and are busily cutting back on any and all social programs like education and social security.

    Gotta love the military-industrial complex.

  8. Allo' Allo',

In terms of these kind of gigs, or indeed most touring packages with 'proper' booking agents, I dont get any choice on the ticket price, I get told what it is, and have to make an offer according, and it's always a case of chase chase chase, so you can be hella' sure that their ain't no bargains in this game for the promotor..

I think it's just a case of 'Aberdeen Syndrome', if a band you like goes to Glasgow, you'll gladly order a ticket online, pay like 10-12 quid, then at least 15 quid to get there, plus all the little extras, but if it's in your home city, in a venue that you frequent, then you look at it as pricey, it aint that much.

The way I always look at things is like this..What's £8? A Burger King and a half, 3/4 of a Pizza Hut Pizza (Stuffed Crust, of course) or not even a round of drinks.

This gig is also the only Scottish date, so it should be wicked, and geez, it must be a good thing for Abnerdeen to be in that sorta position as there's people travelling from all over Scotland for it. Same goes for Terror. These kinda gigs, coupled with Himsa/3 Inches, just get me all the closer to bringing in a little bit of Converge, maybe to The Tunnels.. Muahaha.

  9. Production is about the overall 'sound' of the track/album' date=' and what sounds good and what sounds bad is dependent on someones opinion.

What you may consider to be well produced i may conseder to sound shite, and vise versa.

Im sure i have heard one person say they thought production on a album was good and someone else say the production on the same album was bad, therefore production and sound enginering IS subjective.[/quote']

Kinda, but I was talking about the production in terms of wether or not you can hear what is being done with each instrument, are the vocals are clear blah blah blah.

I agree that for example you can change the way a kick drum sounds during production, and that is certainly subjective, but there are so many variables that can change that sound, and most of them are not related to production. Therefore, the drummer should be involved during the process and ensure that he his happy with the sound.

So, my point is that people can argue all day about wether the drum sounds good or not, but my point was that the you can either hear the drum, and its of an appropriate level, or its not, and that isn't subjective.

  10. What is considerd badly produced album is completley down to personal taste.

One Eyehategod album was recorded on a 4 track with 2 room mics and most would consider it to be 'badly' produced but the sound they got fit the band well and make the album better than if if was ''well'' produced.

Also' date=' Opeth dont finish any song or lyrics before going in to the studio yet there material is shit hot.

   [/quote']

Utter Rubbish, content is subjective, production is not.

Either the track is well produced or it isn't.

  11. I used to know him, he regularly dropped in for a drink when I was the manager of Henry J Beans on the kings road in Chelsea.

this was prior to his transplant, he used to drop in and scoof a large glass of chardonnay in about 3 minutes, but he was always friendly and knew most of us by name. I did hear the classic line from him once 'If my wife asks, you havent seen me today...right?'

One thing I did think was out of order though was when hed given up the booze and came in for the afternoon with alex and some other guy, He stuck to Earl grey tea and Alex (his wife) tanned a bottle and a half of Pinot Grigio..........

Plus the paparazzi got him on the way out and he was on the front page of the Sun the next day leaving our bar with a headline of 'Bestie back on the Booze' or something similiar, when he genuinely hadn't had anything to drink at all.

  12. well,

we didn't think there was a market for a dedicated extreme night in Aberdeen, but we were prepared to listen to people who said there was.

We tried to do it monthly so people had a chance to build up to it, but in the end it costs us money to open with 60-70 people coming in, so we had to scrap it. Maybe you guys should look to put something together yourselves at a smaller venue that has lower operating costs.

    Rob

  13. bah. sure moshulu would've been ace but after waiting in a queue that didn't move for 20 mins (not that I blame moshulu or anyone for this' date=' more my friends who couldn't drink up quick enough earlier in the night) we went elsewhere. made for an altogether mediocre halloween.[/quote']

Apologies Chris, but when we had 700 in we had to slow the queue down.
