  1. believe me, I'd love to go see killa kela but I won't be here when it's on. I know kids get into rock music before anything else usually, it's a teenage rebellion thing, but the only way to turn them onto other styles is for people with more experience to introduce different styles to them. Exactly the sort of thing this site should be doing IMHO. I'm not saying no-one should listen to rock music, I have my favs in the genre too, but I think our music scene is done a disservice by not turning people onto the thousands of different artists out there because they are never given an oppurtunity to hear or hear about them. who knows, maybe if people around here were introduced to some more interesting bands then the aberdeen gig schedules wouldn't read like a who's who of 10th rate punk/ska/metal/grind-wank-emo-prostate-core and instead clubs and bars might start making more effort to get some really good underground acts from other genre's?
  2. aberdeen-MUSIC? not a chance... is it just me or does aberdeen-music seem very much a rock orientated website? About 90% of the discussion focusses on rock music and it seems to be only on rare occasions that artists from outwith those sort of styles get much attention. I understand that the discussions on the forums can only focus on what the users want to talk about but it seems that the whole site and the way it is promoted seems to favour rock music above all else. for example, that picture in the top right of the site... every single person in that is from a rock band. Also the only clubs I see advertised are ones that specialise (mainly) in rock music. What's my point? well, perhaps the name "aberdeen-music.com" is slightly misleading for people who aren't familiar with the website already? so maybe the site could take it's gaze off rock music and possibly feature some discussion/news not related to our "thriving" rock scene and instead feature some other form of music? or perhaps a name change so that "aberdeen-music" could be used by a website that intended to feature bands other than the rock'n'roll massive? thoughts?
  3. much... hang on, that sounds mighty familiar....
  4. when are you lot going to learn? It doesn't matter if you think a band is overated or not, the only things that can decide that are time and influence... for example, many of you have said Led Zepplin and an equal number (if not more) have said the smiths... now I'm sorry but I think the fact every rock band in the world has ripped off Zepplin in some way and every "indie" band takes their cues from the Smiths and the Cure proves that it doesn't really matter what a bunch of arguementative fanboys from the darkest recesses of the internet think because the people that are making the moves and movements in music (i.e the ones that don't just sit about whining about X or Y being overrated but actually get off their arses to make great music) are being influenced by these older bands... In short, why are you bothering to even consider accusing anyone of being overrated? I can't remember the last time I saw any of Aberdeen's "premier" rock bands being listed as an influence on anyone except their mates...
  5. sonic youth weren't grunge, they're too atonal. Ask Johnny or someone with a bit of experience under their belt.
  6. as far as I know it was a label given to a few bands during the 80's. The only main one I can think of is Sonic Youth but I'm guessing there would've been other bands labelled with it too (possibly Mudhoney and their like?)
  7. it's a genuine label, but you don't hear of it much these days. If someone looks emo then they wouldn't be described art punk, I hope that's not the next title to be adopted by that lot, it'd be an insult to bands that do genuinely get called "art punk"...
  8. Was just thinking about this after posting in the wasteland and I thought it might be interesting to ask you lot: What is your favourite band image of all time? (e.g Wildhearts leather and studs or perhaps Franz Ferdinand tight trousers and shirts?)
  9. this brings to mind an interview I read with Ian McKaye a while back. He was basically talking about how the music industry is "dying" but rather than something for music fans to mourn, it is in fact good news(kinda). Think about it, the death of the current music industry isn't really such a bad thing. All it means is that there's less money flowing and most of the industry types (PR, Management, Bigwig types etc) that have nothing to do with the actual making of music might lose their jobs. It doesn't, however, mean that music is going to stop being written. I think if this does happen then it might give a proper independent scene the chance to flourish. The internet is giving small scene bands the oppurtunity to have their music available all over the globe for significantly less cost than before which opens up many doors for actual artists. These changes would also mean that with less industry types around, the artist would have a far greater say in the final outcome of the music which would hopefully mean more honest, decent music and less bandwagon jumping as is the case at the moment. Personally, I think something big is going to happen and I think whatever it is will probably be a good thing for real music lovers, lets face it; it can't get much worse than it has been since the mid 90's.
  10. ah ok. I haven't checked out their site in a while. Last time I did they were talking about something like that... what's the deal with that then?
  11. personally, I reckon ThisGirl will get big this year. Doesn't neccesarily mean everyone'll start liking them but they're recording a major label debut as we speak so I'm assuming they could get fairly big.
  12. Sonic Youth - Goo And You Will Know us by the Trail of Dead - Madonna Kyuss - Sky Valley DJ Shadow/Cut Chemist - Product Placement Buena Vista Social Club - S/T
  13. no point. If what you had to say was true then I must've been wrong. I do apologise.
  14. Yeah Napster and now Kazaa have meant that I can check out any band out there before I buy their CD's. I'm against downloading whole albums but I reckon MP3's have broadened my musical tastes like no other. Also "Make Yourself" by Incubus. Say what you want about Incubus these days, some of their music is dubious at best, but that album taught me so much about music and influenced my tastes and guitar playing like no other before or since.
  15. any reason for that or was it just cos I made a comment about your bandmate? if so that's pretty poor is it not? Dan was being out of order giving some kid banter and also being rascist but you're gonna go at me for sticking up for someone who's being insulted for no other reason than for Dan to make himself look big on a fucking message board? get a fucking grip.
  16. get off your fucking high horse. people can say what they want when they want and regardless of wether you like what they're saying or if you think it's funny they don't need to censor they're speech just to keep douchebags like you happy.
  17. good to see the "delusions of grandeur" tour's going to plan then...

yeah but have you ever seen the size of his pedalboard? it's bigger than your average fat-camp coffin. plus that's been recorded in the studio, he'll play a more stripped down version live I'm guessing and unless you have all his effects and his settings (which you're unlikely to get a hold of) you'd never get it. don't worry about the little things like that.

well you see... I dont wanna sound harsh but who cares how they play it? I'm fairly sure Omar ( and any other guitarist in the world) would say if it sounds right and it's the easiest way for you to play it then it doesn't matter. there's always more than one way to play a song on guitar (usually) so you just need to find the one that works best for you.
  20. Mike Einzenger - guitar Steve Vai - guitar Les Claypool - bass Stewart Copeland - drums Prince - vocals/guitar DJ Shadow - assorted noises or Josh Freese - drums Billy Howerdel - guitar James Iha - guitar Jordie White (sp?) - bass Maynard - vocals oh hang on...
