But this is how it has to be. If this is the end, then so be it. Intense reading the sun article at the bus stop, and glancing at the sad, post-tears face of Peter I felt terrible, yeah a tear or two tried to choke me, but I wouldn't allow it of course.This past year has been the craziest year imaginable, the highs, and the highs and the lows, and the lows. If you'd have told me when I first came round London I would be witnessing, nay being a part of, what's gone on this past year I would never have believed you. Something has happened there, this band have been something for the history books. And if this is the end, then so be it. We have two masterpieces, more than Lee Mavers managed, and more constant than Peter Perret's back catalogue. Plus a pretty fine first EP. And possibly infinite amounts of unreleased and largely unearthed sessions and demos floating about the place. And not to mention the other important part of the Libertines' legacy, as the Poptones article Ben of the Unstrung kindly posted up on Babyshambles.com states, 'The Children Of The Clash', all of the new bands who've been inspired and fired up by The Libertines/Babyshambles/Peter's approach to the music industry, the DIY ethic, the making the music industry work for you approach, rather than the working for the music industry approach. As you might say, the Albion is delayed, not cancelled. Whether or not Peter resurfaces, which I hope more than anything he does, as it's blatantly obvious the band have not reached their peak yet, I still think they have it in them to write and record the best album anyone's ever heard, which maybe, hopefully, will be written over there in Paris in the coming months/years, whether or not Peter resurfaces, The Libertines' legacy is the greatest there's been in years, and proof that even in this age of pop idol and money hungry music execs, the rock'n'roll dream is still alive and as powerful as ever, if you want it to be. Guest prerogative Posted May 28, 2004 Report Share Posted May 28, 2004 Listen up chumps,Pete Doherty is a genious, since 2002 the guy's been in and out of jail, recorded over 130 songs, 5 albums worth of material, 4 unreleased, 1 of which has over 40 songs on it, of which at least 30 are his own writing, all the rest his or a colaberation with carl barat. he plays or played polifically for at least three times a week acoustically, with the band, with side project, or complaterating alongside friends and other bands in london town area and outwith.but, jesus it's looked worse than this before. pete just needs to sort himself out and then he and carl will fix things up. think about it, visits at the priory, poems, kisses and hugs at the nme awards - these are not the actions of two people with differences that can't be resolved. worse comes to the worse the libs will go on without pete and babyshambles will become pete's full time thing. two great bands instead of one incredible one, maybe, but we'll always have up the bracket and the new album (40 songs recorded) to remember the good old days. and never believe anything you read in THE SUN, particularly if the only source is a confused boy going through a terrible time in his life who is clearly not thinking at his most sensibly. For once the media feeding frenzy seems justified and we Brits just might have found our own rock'n'roll saviours at last."The libertines, full stop, create music, art, poetry, love, war and make cocaine sound like a hobby rather than habbit. Primarily, though, theyre known for their music - which is brilliant. Think, Clash, The Jam, The Smiths, The Yardbirds, Chas & Dave and The Small Faces,- on stage their energy is addictive yet they are obviously serious about their music. Should the forthcoming album deliver all the promises made, which if you doubt, you're a fool, then surely they won't remain in the catalogue of bands hyped then dismissed by the mainstream music press. But what is it about this London quartet that has inspired frothing media scribes, veritable legends bernard butler and mick jones to produce their records? it's actually pretty simple- no fuss, no nonsense, just a blitz of whirlwind drumming, breakneck guitar and zooming bass,kind of like they did it in the old days here when the buzzcocks and the clash plied their trade.
