Greatest Reggae/Dub Album (or tune I'm not fussy)

Recommended Posts

Its all rock n roll around here, and while I am partial to a wee bit of it, there is so much more to music. Having just got the new re-issue Lee Perry's 'Dub Triptych'-3 classic 70's dub albums in one package including the quasi mythical 'Blackboard Jungle Dub', and aware that there is sooo fukn much top quality stuff i've not heard yet, I want to see what other people think (all 3 of you)

I'll start then

My all time fave has to be Bunny Wailer 'Blackheart Man'-Deep, Soulful and some of the deepest roundest bass ever.

The Congos 'Heart of the Congos'- Scratch production is next level, and that dudes falsetto is as good as Curtis Mayfield's.

If there is a separate category for dub then its gotta be

'King Tubby meets the Rockers Uptown'

as for individual tunes it varies too much from day to day, but todays fave is 'Cokane in my Brain' by Dillinger. or 'Funky Kingston' by Toots and the Maytals (Lemon Tree 1st July).

Lets face it, if a measurement was taken for a country, whereby X is the number of great songs to come out of a country, was divided by Y the population of that country, then PER-HEAD OF POPULATION Jamaica is the musical centre of the world, certainly far more so than us Scots.

Seen.

I'm more of a dub man than a reggae man. I heartily recommend 'Rids The World Of The Curse Of The Evil Vampires' (or something similar) by Scientist. BEST DUB EVER. It's ace.

You may recognise some of the tunes if you own GTA3.

In no order at all...

Lee Perry - Super Ape

The Congos - Heart of the Congos

Scientist - Heavyweight Dub Champion / Meets the space invaders

Prince Alla - Only love will conquer

King Tubby - Dub Gone Crazy

Skatalites - Foundation Ska

Prince Far I - Psalms for I

Prince Buster - Fabulous Greatest Hits

There are numerous individual tracks spanning 50s Jamican Rn B , ska, rocksteady, roots, dub, dancehall, ragga, nyambinghi etc etc that I could mention as well.

Oh and someone called Bob Marley did some decent recordings and had a great voice etc

Can you tell I was doing a dub compilation last night ?

Aye I have Foundation Rockers, from which the Big Youth track was taken. I've also got Volcanic Dub or whatever the name is. One Up always seem to have some of his stuff on vinyl.

Ryan (Twilight Circus) along with The Bug is one of the more interesting acts in the dub / dancehall / roots scene these days.

"I am a rub a dub soldier fighting to keep the rockers alive",I heard this song in the mid 1980s,it is an ace reggae song with a cracking bass line, anyone know what the song is called or who it is by?.

Lee Scratch Perry is the man for Dub especially the Space Dub 3 Cd set.

Black Uhuru are my favourites ,Robbie Shakespers and Sly Dunbar are the greatest rhythm section alive in the reggae department.Yellowan and Peter Toshs Bushdoctor are notable as weel, och aye the noo maan.

I still think Sinsemilla is a classic &

Live @ The Counter Eurovision By Misty in Roots is the very best reggae

LP ever released, (even tho they come from Southall) anyone that saw Misty

@ the time will know what I mean.
