Mickel Mass (Aberdeen)

Josephine Foster

"As half of the duo Born Heller, Josephine Foster stitched together operatic vocals with the stark, plaintive music of the Appalachian hills - Dock Boggs going on a date with a less confrontational Diamanda Galas. This album utilises a traditional group format but the results are no less disquieting. This is disturbing, inward-looking stuff, reminiscent of west coast psych if Fly Agaric had been the drug of choice. Patti Smith is a very loose starting point but Foster also appears to be channelling the aforementioned Galas, K.U.K.L period Bjork and hippy folk visionary Tom Rapp. Opener Well Heeled Man could well be Shirley Collins picnicking with the Manson family. - Peter Redmond, Mojo ****

"Leaves leaps wildly across the spectrum, strewing faint semblances of punk to the right, psychedelia to the left and folk somewhere in the middle. Mainly, though, the group works the trippy 60s psych vibe, like a medieval orchestra meets Jefferson Airplane" - Laura Barcella, Venus Magazine Fall 2004

"She's a Grace Slick for the 21st century -- and that's all grace, no slick, an amazing combination of God-given ability and formal skill. You can hear Jefferson Airplane in her music, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Joan Baez. . . . She's also the one, out of that whole scene, that has embraced the electric guitar, while at the same time being the most classical of them all."

MI AND LAU, COMING SOON ON YOUNG GOD RECORDS . We have recently finished

recording an album by Mi and Lau here in Brooklyn. I co-produced it with

them. It turned out very lovely indeed. It was a privilege to work with such

talented, sincere, and intensely focused individuals. They have a quite

passion that is expressed both in the way they are as human beings and in

their songs. The music is austere, but simultaneously warm. Picture a

glacier with a red ember glowing in its center. Heres something I wrote a

few months ago about them: Mi and Lau met in Paris a few years back. Mi is

Finnish and was working as a model to make ends meet and Lau (who's French)

was working in the music industry (soundtracks, I think). They fell deeply

and immediately in love, and after a short period of moving from apartment

to apartment in Paris, they gave everything up and decided to move to the

woods in Finland, so they could be alone together in peace and to spend

their time discovering each other and their music. They live in a small

cabin in complete isolation with the barest of essentials (except in the

brutal Finnish winter, when they move to Helsinki) and they spend virtually

all their time making music together in solitude. They are pure and gentle

souls (Devendra's song, from oh me oh my "gentle soul" was written for Lau

the two had met in Paris when Devendra was wandering there, and Lau took him

in, and they also made music together). Their music is bare and austere,

made with simple instrumentation - voice, acoustic guitars, and other very

sparse orchestrations. I wouldn't say it compares at all to the current crop

of neo hippy "weird folk" etc. It has the naked quality of certain early

Nico recordings, or Chet Baker (I don't mean there's a stylistic similarity

by any means - just a sense of space)...soulful and elegant, without being

touchy-feely or confessional. Their music reminds me of how one might

imagine a winter Finnish landscape - haunting and pure.

I played a solo show in Tempere, Finland, and they drove up and played the

show too. I was immediately convinced that YGR needed to release their

music. Their songs and stage presence were utterly poised and compelling.

With the simplest of means, they quietly occupied the stage and room with

understated confidence - an almost theatrical, empty calm, similar to the

way space is occupied in a Beckett play, minus the grimmer aspects.

Seductive and captivating.

Well get some sound samples up of them at this website soon. Other

contributors to this recording included the house band (!) of Akron/Family

playing a variety of instruments as usual - as well as strings by Julia

Kent and Paul Cantelon, and double bass by the esteemed Jerome OBrien. It

was recorded at Seizures Palace by Jason LaFarge and Mixed by Bryce Goggin

at Trout recording....
