The Blue Lamp is great, but from what I understand the owner is quite particular over the bookings that he takes. He likes putting on folk music/jazz, and the comedy nights there are always packed. But it's never going to be a venue that puts on loud rock bands on a regular basis; it's a shame to some extent but at the same time you have to respect the wishes of the management I guess.

Malones late bar...are folk still using it to put on gigs?

I echo what most people say about Cellar 35, it has filled the void of a 100 capacity venue that Aberdeen, in my opinion, desperately needed. Glasgow and Edinburgh have always had venues this size, but Aberdeen only really had the Tunnels and Drummonds that would put on regular gigs. I rate the Tunnels as a venue but it feels dead even if 50 folk are in there...50 folk in Cellar 35 makes for a pretty good gig.

My only slight qualm with Cellar is the layout, but this obviously can't be avoided given the structure of the building and it would be silly to have the stage in any other part of the room.

I love playing the Lemon Tree, mainly due to the quality of the on stage sound.

 

Unless you're a graduate trying to get onto a graduate scheme extra curricular activities are mostly irrelevant, put them on your CV but at the very bottom so that only people that are already interested will see them.

 

I agree to a certain extent, but what does a school leaver have to set them apart from the rest of the applicants (presumably other school leavers) with similar grades? I agree that it shouldn't be the focal point of the CV/application, but stating this information even at the bottom of the page gives you the edge over other people who perhaps don't take part in extra curricular activities.

It's something I was always told to do anyway, as a graduate I wouldn't include the school stuff now but I agree that extra things done while at Uni (sports society, part time job etc) are pretty important to graduate employers.

Yes, if it's something like Duke of Edinburgh or 'Rock Challange' type of thing then I think that would be good.

This is becoming quite hypothetical but if you involve yourself in something outwith your school day that develops any sort of skill, and are good at it, then this is definitely a favourable attribute.

If you're going into the type of job whereby communication is important (ie a support worker, any type of media, customer service...there are many relevant jobs) then being able to communicate and validate your point of view is a key skill. This might not be important for the type of position that JB recruits for, however to state that it is counter productive to put this type of information in a CV is counter productive in itself; extra curricular responsiblities are exactly the kind of thing most recruiters would look for in a young employee.

If you have been the team captain for a debate committee do not put that on yer CV.. It reads yer like an argumentative kinda person lol...

The timing of this thread is rather coincidental, as it occurred to me the other day that  I got my first guitar when I was 12 and I'm now 24; so I've spent half of my life playing instruments.

I got my first guitar as a Christmas present, it was a squier strat starter pack with a wee 10 watt amp. My brother got a drum kit a short while after so we starting playing music together, and this got me really excited to form a band. None of my friends played instruments or had any interest in learning to play though, so I had to wait until I was 15 to find other musicians to play with. I met some like minded individuals in music classes at school who I formed Marionettes with, and we still play together 9 years on. Since then, I've been much more focussed on writing music as opposed to the technical aspect of playing, which isn't really a regret but I should definitely be far more technicially proficient for somebody who's been playing for over a decade.

They kept getting pissy as I had rugby training everywednesday but there's nothing I could do, in the end they said if it happened one more time (obviously it would) they would sck me. I did the favour and walked out and called them cunts. It was my sisters round I took over and they always chatted her up and asked her out and that. Pervs.

I quit working at a Somerfield because I was given the 7am Sunday shift that nobody else wanted; never handed in my notice didn't go back after failing to turn up one day. I woke up really hungover and looked at my phone to see that I had received numerous missed calls and voicemails, which started off as "WHERE ARE YOU THIS IS UNACCEPABLE?!?" that progressed to "We are SO WORRIED about you...please let us know you're ok". I never went back to work there but regularly went in as a customer to rub it in their faces. That's my only experience of supermarket work and I fucking hated it.

I worked in a bank for a couple of months; this was long enough for me to realise that they are fucking evil. They make you attend a two week training course which basically attempts to brainwash you into thinking the way they think, convincing you that you're helping people but really just ripping them off to no end and leaving them in a far worse financial predicament than when they came to see you in the first place. A customer was literally reduced to tears when I told her she was to be rejected credit, so i fucked off that afternoon without working any notice. Most awful place I've ever worked.

You're a funny guy; I imagine this is the case for most people seeing as it hasn't been booked yet.

I don't really remember Casiraghi playing at Chelsea at all. As if his signing was a myth. I remember him from Football Italia though.

 

The Shevchenko debacle was pretty bad. He wasn't all that bad a player when he was at chelsea but everything seemed magnified. Torres has gotta be up there too. Going from such an explosive player to a simpering bit-part hold-up merchant is sad to see. I still have faith he'll get some of his spark back.

I understand most of these are strikers, but they are more often than not deemed as flops because they come in and don't score enough goals. However most of these guys were just all round woeful.

It's not necessarily worship, I just like what I've heard. Don't really agree with the Stereophonics comparison, mainly because I detest them. I know they were a bit heavier back in the day, but I associate them with being extremely bland and having a lack of...well anything good really.

Back on track...

Just heard a new Pinact tune from a split vinyl release they're doing with 3 other bands. Such a prolific band, literally haven't heard one tune from them that I don't like. Not normally a fan of 2 piece bands but I feel like they really do it justice.

Farewell Singapore were right good at the gig we played with them last week.

Not to be biased towards Lenin Death Mask given I have friends in the band, but they have improved massively in the short time they've been playing and seem to be doing all the right things, ie getting their demos out there and gigging like fuck.

I once put custom volume knobs on a Squier strat that allowed you to turn it up to 11.

Aside from this I don't have the time to fix guitars or set them up, but I really wish I knew more about it. I'd love to build one from scratch using parts from here there and everywhere. The only relatively custom guitar I've ever owned was a Mexican Fender strat with a seymour duncan cool rails in the bridge, resprayed pickguard and custom tuners (none of these upgrades were done by myself). Unfortunately this guitar got nicked.

I agree with the latter point. I had no part in the naming of the band, but did thoroughly enjoy being a part of it.

Had the misfortune of seeing him live once. And trust me, it's even worse than the video.

Gona miss this place, although a lot of my experiences of Snafu have been soured by awful door staff.

Dirty Hearts Club as both a performer and spectator was always great, as well as going along most weeks when I was in my early years at University.
