  1. Holy moly, a bit of punctuation wouldn't go a miss here.

awa nbdy uses at shite anymr not even gt time to type out wrds fullt or got time to go back n correct what my phn tlls me it thinks i menat

Ha ha, can you imagine how topsy-turvy the universe would become if I started doing that for real? O judgement! Thou art fled to brutish beasts and men have lost their reason.

  2. I'm thinking of selling my Gibson SG-Z bass as I continue to shuffle the pack a bit. I really miss having a Les Paul bass and I can't afford to get one without letting something go :(

This rare bass was only made from 1998-2002 and it could be said to be the final SG/EB bass design (the current SG bass being short scale and more of a 60s reissue minus the varitone).

    Specs:

Mahogany body, mahogany set neck, rosewood fingerboard, 20 frets, 2 individually coil tappable humbuckers.

Volume, Volume, Tone, a series/single/parallel switch for each pickup.

It's an amazing looking bass, and it's pretty versatile in the sound department with all the coil switching options. It is also absurdly light. It's in really good nick, a couple of small dings and a tiny bit of rash in the back of the body but nothing major. Everything is original save for one replacement coil tap switch. No case.

I'd like £900 for this rarely seen bass. Cheers.

  3. As long as people aren't being total dicks about it, suggesting a price adjustment could in some cases be beneficial to the seller and put them on the right track to a sale.

Yeah, and one is being a dick if one does it publicly. It's like strolling onto a car dealer's forecourt with a megaphone and proclaiming that their prices are too high. Suggest your price adjustment in a PM (or in a private, one to one conversation with the salesperson).

  4. Hi folks

I have to thin the herd a bit, a few too many similar basses in the house at the moment, so I offer for sale a 1985 Yamaha BB300. It's a simple, passive bass with a nice neck that's neither Jazz nor Precision, a reverse P pickup and a 21 fret neck. I've used this for a couple of gigs and it's sounded great - it could be argued that every P pickup should be this way round (makes the D and G strings bassier and reins in the E and A a little for an arguably more balanced, rounded sound)

It's got a fair bit of wear and tear on the body as I've tried to highlight in the last two pics (quite tatty round the edges and a bit of a gouge in the back above the control cavity) but the neck is in good shape with a smooth, deep, glossy lacquer. Taking its condition into account I'd like the measly sum of £100 for this bass.

Anyway, enough guff, here are some pics:

  5. There's more variety in my basses than in anything else. Always subject to change but at the moment:

    Gibson Victory Artist/Gibson RD Artist/Gibson IV/Gibson SG-Z/G&L Tribute L-2000/G&L El Toro/Yamaha BB300/Yamaha BB450 -> Boss TU-2 -> RedSub BT5110 -> its own 1x10 cab for 250W OR Zoot ZB410 for 500W.

  6. I've seen people so blinded by the shininess that they come to me with a Mac wanting a software package installed that is only available for Windows, and is a fundamental requirement for their work. This is despite my advice to the contrary. So they end up getting Bootcamped anyway because people don't understand virtual machines. So well done, you've got a very expensive (especially after you've purchased a copy of Windows 7 as well, because there's no way I'm digging you out of this hole for nothing), shiny PC with one less mouse button than is required to run Windows - I salute you (sarcastically, of course)!

And no, I'm not keen on Macs. Not keen on Windows either, come to think of it. It's Ubuntu at home for me, and I don't care what you think of that.

  7. Contrary to my reasonably expensive taste, I just finished rebuilding a poor old abused Yamaha BB450. Cost me about £50 all in all (not counting my time). It's pretty decent sounding and decent playing too.

I have a soft spot for Yamaha BBs, me.

  8. Cool!

What are those pickups all about? It actually looks like a well nifty bass, is the neck nice and chunky? You know how much I like a maple fretboard too!

4 individually adjustable pole pieces per string - too much? ;) Neck is definitely chunky, but not baseball bat like either.

  9. 3 switches?

    Yup, more G&L madness:

    Black switch - pickup selector

Red switch - bass boost (defeats pickup selector, connects both pickups in series, engages additional capacitor to filter out certain frequencies)

    White switch - passive/active

Mind you that's only 8 effective combinations - not quite as mad as my modded L-2000

    Switch 1 - pickup selector

    Switch 2 - parallel/single coil (inner)/series

    Switch 3 - passive/active/active with treble boost

    27 combinations :)

  10. Once again the strings are far too thin in here. Allow me to redress the balance:

    01_all.jpg

A 1985 G&L El Toro. Quite a rare beast. And beastly loud it is too.

    02_body.jpg

Matching headstock for the win :)

    03_head.jpg

I've got a bit of work to do on it (I think the bass pot is bust - it's acting like a switch - all bass or none after about 20% travel). I'm going to have fun finding a 1MOhm reverse audio (anti-log) pot. In the mean time, what a shame it is to be stuck with maximum bass ;)

  11. Speaking specifically regarding Gibson vs. Epiphone and even further specifically about basses, I have owned or at least played the following:

    Epiphone EB-0

    Epiphone EB-3

    Epiphone Les Paul Standard bass

    Epiphone Thunderbird Goth

    Epiphone Thunderbird Pro

    Gibson G-3

    Gibson IV

    Gibson Victory Artist

    Gibson RD Artist

    Gibson SG-Z

I can honestly say that out of all of those only the Epiphone Les Paul Standard bass (the one with the carved top and body binding - no longer made) came close to matching the fit, finish, playability and sound of any of my Gibsons (the LP Standard was lovely and I still kinda miss it - had to mod the hell out of the innards, but the neck was grand). Yes, I know I'm not comparing like with like in terms of models, but at least I've played all the models I'm talking about. That's not to say I would completely discount Epis in the future - I still have a niggling desire for the Jack Casady signature - but I also wonder how it would stack up against a Gibson Les Paul Signature (upon which the JC is based). Once I win the lottery, I'll let you know.

On the other hand, I have a beat up Yamaha BB300 which cost me a smidge over £100 and it's great. Single pickup (reverse P) and a really comfortable neck.

You want a tough call? Try G&L vs. G&L Tribute. With exactly the same pickups and mostly the same hardware, the only reason I can see for you to get a USA G&L is if there is no Tribute version of the model you want (the ASAT bass, for instance), you want a different neck profile to the single choice you get with the Tribute, or a finish that isn't available on the Tribute, or a poshy option like matching headstock or body/neck binding. The Tributes are frighteningly good value for money. I own a Tribute L-2000 and have played a USA L-2000 and to be honest I don't feel like I'm missing out on anything.

  12. Does anyone actually enjoy their job/career?

Genuine question. Do you like what you do and who you do it for?

I love my job. I love where I work. I get minimal hassle/pressure and manage my own workload with minimal interference from higher-ups. I can go outside at lunchtime and walk into a picture postcard world of trees, old buildings and cobbled streets. The people I do jobs for are on the whole friendly and appreciative. I have a nice pension plan.

They'll have to kick me out because as far as I'm concerned, this is me for the rest of my working days.
