  1. What like was the turnout at your gig if you don't mind me asking?

The menu looks really good. Proper noms to be had!

Is it really open 24 hours a day? I'd feel so bad rocking up at 3 in the morning, dragging the chef out their bed demanding a curry or something.

Like I say looking at googlemaps it's a short trip from my house so I'll need to check it out.

Oh it wasn't huge - 30-40 folk maybe?  Great atmosphere though, lots of people up dancing.  My wife took some panoramic photos (we were playing in the big bus shed):

I hope that scales down and doesn't mess the whole forum up!

On the front page of their cafe website it says "Please note: the Lastbus Works Canteen is now open Friday - Sunday 10am - 10pm" so probably best to go between those times in the first instance.  Also saw this - "The Works Canteen will shut down on 21 April 2013 for essential maintenance.  Re- opening provisionally scheduled for 11 May", so you might want to check first and make sure they're all up and running again.

  2. Can someone please recommend a decent, non-clunky, streamlined audio player for windows? Something that has a nice simple organiser and whatnot. Preferably something just for audio, as I don't really watch any videos on my laptop. Windows and Apple seem to lock horns over who can produce the most godawful, memory hogging, screen freezing dogshit audio decoder imaginable, and it's neck and neck. iTunes is a hellhole, and WMP is just makes absolutely no sense.

Is Winamp still any good? Are there any others?

All of this should be bold, but it's not, because fuck you.

I still use Winamp at work and as far as I'm concerned it still manages to whip the llama's ass.  I use VLC on Ubuntu at home, but that's for vids as well.

  3. I find this questioning of pricing in public rather distasteful.  If you've got a beef with someone's price, make 'em an offer in private with your reasoning instead of undermining them and making them look daft, which whether it was your intention or not you'll end up doing anyway.

  4. I'm gonna start using this thread for 'hypothetical quick questions'

One I saw the other day: would you rather master all the instruments in the world or all the languages in the world?

It's a tough one but I would say instruments. On the one hand you could communicate with anyone in the world but you would only be a regular person in the crowd when speaking a language. The fact you can travel across borders and know what everyone is saying does sound fantastic but you can't talk multiple languages at the same time - it's only a really great skill when u swap from one to the other.

Mastering all instruments would transcend language barriers and be universally awesome.

How many instruments can one (realistically and proficiently) play at the same time?  Without looking like one of those ridiculous (though undoubtedly talented) one-person-band affairs with cymbals between your knees and all that jazz?

Changeover is quicker with languages.  You can speak long after the arthritis has robbed you of your ability to play instruments.  Languages only take up room in your head.

Also I'd much rather be called a polyglot than a "fucking showoff" ;)

  5. Right, once again it falls to me to balance out all this bloody guitar chat.

First of all, I want my Ripper to be finished and for it to look like this:

    red_mockup.jpg

And I want to find one of these:

    mad_les_paul_bass.jpg

Greco Les Paul shaped thing.  3 pickups, 3 volumes.  Pure Japanese madness.

  6. Oh yeah, forgot to mention that I'm also working on restoring a 1975 Gibson Ripper bass.

I forgot the rules of the Internet - pics or it never happened.

When it arrived it looked like this:

    01_front_all.jpg

    It currently looks like this:

    01_cover.jpg

Tapping my fingers waiting for stuff to arrive from the States, like the pickguard, machine heads, one of the pickups etc.

If all goes well then I hope it will look like this mockup:

  7. Works for a good chunk of bassists the world over.

Well, it's certainly not something I'd aspire to which I guess I should have said in the first place instead of trying to be snarky.

Having said that, I have my doubts that someone used to coming up with riffs and other interesting melodic constructs on guitar would find playing DUM DUM DUM DUM particularly interesting.

  8. I knew you'd chip in here...I'm clearly joking, and I hope it wasn't a slight on my personal ability or I swear to God I'll fuck you up. ;)

And for the record, too many 'amazing' bassists overplay.

Well I guess I'm not really joking. A gammy hand can play bass in a lot of bands. The Gammy Hands is a great band name. Sentences.

I'd hate to play bass with a gammy hand.

Are you ever going to claim that hat? ;)

  9. God, for some reason I am tempted by this. Bet I wouldn't get on with though. Mike from Seas, Starry has a Gordon Smith Tele and it has a 12" radius neck, which I found strange. Apparently, that's the standard for Gordon Smith guitars? Excellent build quality though, but I don't need/can't afford another guitar!

Jan, I think someone's hacked your account ;)

  10. They look interesting. Would they need any special routing? It mentions the pickguards need to be rectangular but there is no mention of the body routs.

Doesn't look like it, the mounting lugs are rounded like on a normal Strat pickup.  Only the holes in the pickguard would need squaring off I reckon.

  11. I've never found anywhere in Aberdeen able to supply me with the bits I want.

If you order them this morning you'll probably have 'em tomorrow.  Generally if I order early in the morning then http://www.axesrus.com post pretty sharpish.  They don't have everything, but they're my go-to place for nick-nacks like these - free postage too.  If you want a single pot, some places charge more for the postage than the pot cost in the first place.
