  1. If you're lucky, it's just the partition table that's gone a bit funny.  Perhaps a tool like this might help:

    http://download.cnet.com/MiniTool-Partition-Wizard-Home-Edition/3000-2094_4-10962200.html?tag=dropDownForm;productListing;pop

BE VERY CAREFUL - tools like these can easily render your computer inoperable.  Make sure you're looking at the correct disc before you do ANYTHING.

Try the Partition Recovery Wizard and scan the whole disk - see what happens.  It won't help you if the drive is physically damaged in some unfortunately strategic place.

  2. I'm having a problem with my external hard drive. A friend of mine had it for a while and I just recently got it back and today tried to use it for the first time. However the drive is not appearing in my computer. It is appearing in Devices and printers and properties says the device is working normally. I've gone into disk manager and it's showing the disk as not initialised and unallocated and it won't let me initialise disk. I did a bit of googling but didn't really understand what I read but I did get the impression it might be fucked.

    Any ideas?

Bothered about any of the content that might have been on there previously?

  3. Give me an example of a band that falls into this category.

Please forgive my previous snappiness.  It's not the bands I have a beef with, it's the plethora of genres in general.  The granularity of the dataset is such that the differences between the individual genres are getting so small that the originality criteria required to instigate a new genre is becoming more and more tenuous.

It's just an opinion/suspicion that people start new genres because they wish to disassociate themselves from previous genres, scenes or whatever.  Form new gangs/tribes/cliques.  I really don't care about that kind of stuff.

I find the prefixing of genres with "post" to be the height of arrogance.  So you represent the new and evolved form of an existing genre do you?  So much so that it's noteworthy in its own right?  Why?  Says who?

And suffixing genres with -core is as stupid as suffixing scandals with -gate.  It was funny the first time, maybe.

Ach, I should shut up.  I think it's just me getting old.  Ten years from now I probably won't be listening to music at all and grumping and grizzling about the noise that youngsters make these days.  I'm sorry I dumped all this negativity towards genres in your thread which I'm guessing was meant to celebrate and discuss genres.

    :(

  4. Genres - needed they may be (if only to help categorise stuff in the record shop),  but I believe that the plethora of genres, sub-genres, combinations of genres and the paper-thin differences between some of them exist to fluff the egos of those who believe themselves to be in that genre and to generate false feelings of superiority and exclusivity.

  5. Seems like quite a good bit of software.

It is good for a free program, note entry is a bit clunky but once you get used to its foibles it's fine.  Also the in built PDF export is a bit crap.  You get much better results if you print to an external PDF generator.

  6. One of the expensive electric hybrid route 59 buses has been damaged after an idiot decided to crash right into the bus, arsehole causing tailbacks. He is in hospital so you know where he is if you want your own back.

Are you actually suggesting that people visit someone who is injured in hospital to give them a piece of their mind, a slap or whatever dark, vengeful undercurrent you had in mind?  Unacceptable.

  7. I'm currently notating all the bass lines in the songs that I play in the band just now.  I'm finding it quite useful to be able to zoom out and look at a song as a whole thing instead of it being a rapid sequence of events that I forget as soon as they've happened (and sometimes forget before they've happened ;) ).  Pleased to see that it's not just a bunch of root notes and sometimes I have to get the semiquavers out ;)  It's also quite handy to be able to overlay vocal melodies and see what works and what doesn't.

Am using Tuxguitar - it's free, it's multitrack and it means I can be lazy and enter notes in tab and they end up being notated for me, but I hope that in time it will get me round to a better understanding of notation.

  8. There's no way I'm playing for free when there's money being taken at the door that isn't being used to help eradicate cancer or some such like noble aspiration.  When the venue will get paid, the bar staff will get paid and the sound engineer will get paid, why is the musician's (crucial) contribution to the evening not valued at all?  For the love of all that's tangible and intangible, we're not mercenaries - we're just looking for some kind of a financial acknowledgement that we went up on stage and DID SOME WORK.  Yes, playing music is work, and the bit you see on stage is just the tip of the iceberg of purchasing/maintaining gear, rehearsal costs, travel costs, self-promotion and (most crucially) TIME.

So to summarise your pitch it boils down to this for me - you're asking me to do my hobby for free and absorb all the attendant costs so that you can get financed to indulge yours?

    No thank you.

If I've got the wrong end of the wrong stick then I will gladly apologise in exchange for some enlightenment.

  9. Doesn't that mean you can't get food next weekend?

The re-opening which, according to the website announcement has already happened at time of writing this post was described as provisional, so I'm happy to accept that maybe you know something about this which I don't.

  10. Does anyone have experience of shipping guitars when you dont have the security of a hard case, where might I source a box...

Any help or advise would help.

    Thanks

    G...

I've got heaps of boxes, more bass sized than guitar but might be useful. Basically when packing a guitar you have to have soft material around it all (bubble wrap, foam, polystyrene bits) and you have to pack the box tight without the risk of bursting the box. You're looking for zero movement within the box.

Then use a decent carrier. I have had no bother with Interparcel. Their "own" services are supplied by UPS. No accidents, no damage, no losses in at least 10 transactions.

    I've probably jinxed it now!

    Hope that helps.

  11. I still don't understand what this Last Bus place is? A music venue with a cafe, themed around a bus depot? With a carriage with a bed in it for.......decoration? It looks fucking ace and my missus is a vegetarian so would be great to take her there for some food as there are such limited places that do decent veggie food in Aberdeen

That's pretty much it.  I think the converted railway carriages can be used for overnight accommodation.  Don't quote me on that though.  Just ask 'em.

  12. I approve.  Cool version.  Singing's better than Nico too, but that sounds like damning with faint praise ;)  How about "that's a really good way of making it sound different to the original"?  It's still got that disconnected, "I'm not sure I give a monkey's about this song, or anything else come to think of it" vibe of the original vocal, but being more tuneful/sweet.

Instrumentation - tasteful and well done as always.  Keep it up, guys.
