  1. But why shouldn't football be spread around the world? It is the World Cup after all. The bid team just can't accept that non-established footballing nations are being given the chance to shine. I read an article interviewing the head of the bidding team or something and he just sounded bitter as fuck. Go sook a lemon.

Exactly what I was thinking. I think it is quite good it is going to new countries otherwise the process just becomes a round robin of who can host the tournament. Although Russia and Qatar are unusual choices (and possibly fueled by other motives i.e. cash), the opportunity for the likes of South Africa getting it was good for the tournament. Personally though, I still think England had a very strong case for the tournament. It hasn't been held there for a long time and in terms of putting on an event and a spectacle it was in a strong position. I was just hoping for a jolly though so I would say that.

I think there is a level of arrogance surrounding English football that just rubs people up the wrong way and that really doesn't help the bid either. The EPL is a fantastic league but it is people from within the set up and media who like to let everyone know that it is "the best league in the world". I'm sure there are quite a few people enjoying England not getting the 2018 WC.

  2. Reading an interview with Andy Anson just now about claims over how FIFA are crooked and break promises. With regards to broken promises he is quoted as saying "David Dein, myself, David Cameron, David Beckham and Prince William were looking people in the eye and asking them for their vote and being told "yeah"". Erm, is that not a bit crooked in itself?!

I really wanted England to get the bid as it would have been a good opportunity to get a few outings but didn't like reading this. I'm actually assuming this went on with all the nations who were in the running. Sounds like a voting system for Eurovision not the fucking World CUp.

  3. The National - High Violet

    Jonsi - Go

Doves - Live at the Eden Sessions

    Arcade Fire - The Suburbs

Didn't really get too many new releases this year, must have been topping up my back catalogue instead. High Violet is an absolute stunner though and I've played that to death.

  4. Whilst it was unsuccessful, we did have a bid for Euro 2008. Would another joint bid be out of the question? We wouldn't have made the 2008 bid if we didn't have the infrastructure to host a major tournament. If memory serves a reliance on just three cities was one of the downfalls so if we learn from that and try and spread the chosen locations across the countries I don't see why we can't make another joint bid.

  5. When the club has no resources or any considerable cutting edge within the squad, I can't see what a different manager can really do to improve the situation. I don't really think footballers are the blank canvases they are percieved to be that need to be directed by the boss. All a manager can do is give the players a different tactical approach, but he cannot gift them with more footballing ability. Just look at England as a prime example. Fab Cap has won everything and has all the right exerience and qualifications extensively, but what can he get out of our lot? Nothing.

You could have Brian Clough in there. I don't think it would matter. The team looks guff, and there's no belief or confidence from anyone involved with the team it seems.

Footballers aren't blank canvasses but different managers can get different responses out of individual players. Unfortunately, footballers can be a precious bunch and man management skills go a long way in getting a response out of a team. Look at Harry Redknapp, he put chips back on the menu and gave Tom Huddlestone back his bottle of ketchup and they're in the Champion's League now.

  6. 3) Fans that show even just the slightest amount of empathy towards the players. I honestly believe that our home support are harder and more unforgiving that almost any other club I've visited, and it's just totally counter-productive. Fans always refuse to admit an ounce of collective responsibility for a club's situation, but it simply isn't reasonable to expect human beings to perform to the best of their ability when they're subjected to the sort of abuse shouted from the stands. Give them a break. If you want to be a supporter, then cheer them on.....otherwise, get the fuck out.

JACKPOT! I've said this for years that our home games can be difficult for the players as the fans turn on the team so quickly. Jimmy's first season was an exception and the atmosphere was supportive of the team, if we lost a goal and went behind the crowd tried to pick the team up. Now if we lose a goal all manner of pish gets screamed at the players. Some of the stuff that gets shouted out the stand is mindless and the reasoning for it even moreso..."they're professional footballers, they should be able to take it!" is a personal favourite. Unfortunately, getting the point across to the support that the team needs to be backed rather than abused isn't that easy.

I'd like to see us go back to basics in terms of our approach as McGhee tried too hard to make the 4-5-1/4-3-3 formation work and it was clearly an issue. Keeping players in their natural positions would be nice as well (although this may be a problem due to the lack of full backs) and I think there could be a good partnership in Vernon and Maguire if we go two up front.

  7. Dave Bowman? He got tonnes of red cards. Holds the record for longest suspension in Scottish football as well I think.

That's the fella. Apparently I exaggerated though as according to Wikipedia it was a seven match ban whilst playing for Forfar. I'm just going to round it up and say it was a 15 match ban though.

  8. I've had a total blank in terms of his name but an ex-Dundee Utd player who was playing for Montrose (or Arbroath...or Brechin) got something ridiculous like 15 red cards in a game which effectively ended his career due to the length of the ban. Actually, maybe it was a 15 game ban but the point is he got fucking loads of red cards in one game.

His first name might have been Dave. If anyone can fill in the blanks you'd be putting my mind at rest.

  9. I remember Liverpool doing the same a couple of years back. Benitez told Kuyt to pick up a booking (against PSV I think) so he would be clear for the knockouts. Kuyt went about wiping everyone out but it still took ages to get a yellow. There was a great shot of him complaining about not getting booked.

  10. I think they do, my brother goes there and he said a while back he often goes to watch a few games at once.

This is confirmed as true. I'd go with Shaki's suggestion though, the Adam Lounge is proper good for Saturday afternoon football.
