  1. I actually downloaded it the other da...listening again now.

The intro promises a lot, too much reverb on the beat that comes in though, in my humble opinion... the vocal works really well with that little sax/trumpet sample...sounds a bit scatter-brained between 3:00 and 4:00, still too much reverb on the drums. It sounds like a different track when the drummachine beats and synth comes in...what is the going on with the recorded vocal towards the end, lol.

Interesting stuff but kinda rough around the edges.

  2. and for those that have offered constructive critiscm i thank you and it will all be taken into consideration. and unfortunatly as much as im sure u would love us to dissapear we have had various comments of outside aberdeen who have been supportive of what we are trying to do here.

Mate, nobody want's you to dissapear. Nobody is being spiteful, fuck I don't even know you, my critiism was solely based on the merit of your recording. I can understand if like your mum said "well done" etc, but frankly, anyone who didn't tell you the truth is doing you a disservice. Don't take it personally. You guys need to improve, it's as simple as that, and the biggest step you can take is being able to accept that this material is rubbish and you need to aim higher.

  3. There is nothing, nothing atall about this which merits anything other than a "well at least you tried". It sounds like band practice at the special school - the "vocalist" just adds icing to the cake, with the pointless downsyndrome-esque howling. The whole thing literally brought a tear to my eye, solely because I was laughing so hard.

You guys need to practice, and practice a lot. You need to all sit down and listen to that recording with a subjective ear, play some cd's of bands that have inspired you first, and then play your track, and listen to the difference, in order to get some perspective. Imagine how your recording would sound if it was slipped into the middle of a CD by your favourite artist, and this will give you something to aim for in terms of improving your playing.

  4. Heh' date=' this just goes to prove how much databases are holding me back. My php is reaching very high end stuff now, but my lack of knowledge of databases complicates matters. Did 3 years of the bloody things at uni, so I can design fairly efficient databases, removing repeating data blah blah you get the idea. I have a nice big mySQL manual I'm trawling through at the moment.

While you're here, if I set a field to be of type Date, how would I insert a date into it from the php end, and what format does if come out as (eg when I get the data using the usual select query, does the date just come out as a string formated XXXX:XX:XX or as an array with the three elements?) Sorry if I don't make much sense, the problem of being self taught is you can learn everything perfectly, but you don't really know the terminology.[/quote']

the format is YYYY-MM-DD, when you are putting in a date or extracting one

    INSERT INTO table (date_column,some_other_column) VALUES ("2005-01-01","foo");

have a look at the TIMESTAMP datatype and the NOW() function aswell in your manual, you can automatically set the date/time for the entry when you insert data, based on the system clock.

  5. mySQL... its not so much the database thats the problem as it has plenty of handy features for organising by dates etc' date=' but its more what happens once you've taken the information out of the database (in this case into a php enviroment) where the problems start. There are ways round it, I know that, but I've just found it easier from day one to just put the date in reverse order when it goes into the database, or in some cases use a unix epoch or similar.

Have to admit databases are not my strongest side... I know enough to get the job done happily, but theres probably far more they could be doing to help me sometimes...[/quote']

if you use the DATE datatype for your date column, you can sort the output from mysql in your SELECT query, e.g

SELECT * FROM table ORDER BY date

where "date" is the column you are storing the date in...

    http://dev.mysql.com/doc/mysql/en/date-and-time-types.html

    if that's any help

  6. Why in the name of god do American's see some logic in placing the months before the days? Doing a web design project and its proving to be one major pain in the arse... If you don't know what I'm talking about' date=' Americans list the month before the day, so todays date would be written 01.27.2005... its just goddam stupid... does anyone know a good explanation for it?

    [/quote']

probably the same reason they twisted the english language and called it their own, i.e they are fucking morons.

While we're on the subject' date=' does it not make a lot more sense to completely reverse the way we write the date, so today would be 2005.01.27 - I do this anyway when storing dates in a database as it becomes nice and simple to sort queries in chronological or reverse chronological order. For example in our current system 12.01.1111 would be rated as a higher value than 01.01.2005 simply because of the leading number 1, despite being a thousand years ago, but if you write the date in reverse you get the correct order.

    [/quote']

What kind of database are you using, because that strikes me as being a bit odd.

  7. how does that work? wouldn't you just get an error for an unrecognised file or unsupported file type?

note down the specs of your source wave file, e.g 8kHz/8bit/mono, rename file extension to ".raw", and open in photoshop. Edit away, then re-save as a new .raw file, which you can then load into your audio editor as raw pcm data (you will have to tell it the original samplerate etc) and then save as a normal wave file again (editing destroys the file format header)

You can listen to the pic at the top of the thread by loading into photoshop and saving as .raw format, then changing the file extension to .wav and playing it in whatever (it hasnt been edited so the .wav header is still there)

  8. was there for the last open mic night.

played an atrocious Scatha cover and got my genitals out alot on stage.

    o cant belive its gone.

im gonna go cry into a bottle then drink the tears. this is FUCKING shit!

I think it's kinda funny actually, I'm wondering how many local "bands" will disappear now that the care in the community venue is gone.

  10. what i've found is that some beer can act as a sort of beta blocker for the nervous performer in a live situation...but it doesnt take much to put you over the edge.

I enjoy jamming when i'm wasted

What I find with booze, is that I can spend maybe 6 hours during the day working on a track and make a lot of progress with it (sober), then as soon as I have a couple of drinks, the workflow goes out the window, progress stalls and I end up losing focus completely.

I like jamming a bit when I've had a few, but I wouldn't say it's productive, just fun.

  11. But the point is turning to "goth culture" was not a cause of his personality. If anything' date=' his personality was a cause of his adoption of gothism .

    [/quote']

I see what you are getting at, this is one of the things i dont like about the goth culture. Disenchanted/socially outcast/depressed/emotional and intelligent kids who feel alone and isolated in society will look to anything for consolation and acceptance and comradeship, and I think it's a real shame that some of them get sucked into this angsty, wallowing in self-pity subculture, because all it does is reinforce their belief that they are abnormal/miserable/etc and it turns into a sort of celebration of their feelings of isolation and despair.

I think you have to admit though, that a kid like that, doesn't just start carving 666 into his arm or saying he is satanic, without some external cultural influence.

At that age they are essentially vulnerable people, and all sorts of things will influence them.

  12. There is a DIFFERENCE between influencing a lifestyle and actually influencing a murder.

If it wasn't "goth culture" that he latched onto' date=' it'd be something else. Millions of people listen to Marilyn Manson, but do you see all those people murdering people? If somehting truly IS an evil influence, it would make a LOT more poeple into murderers. You can't judge something just because of the actions of one idiot.

Look at it like this: people in the fifties thought Elvis was evil because he girated his hips. How pathetic does that seem now?[/quote']

The point is, "goth" culture etc that he was influenced by, as many people are, totally harmlessly, nevertheless filled his head with fucked up ideas, and I'm willing to bet that had a psychotic episode because of all the pot smoking, which led to the violent manifestation of his fucked-up thoughts. I have seen first-hand people having psychotic episodes, and let me tell you, all rational thought goes out the window.

Anyone suggesting that goth culture doesn't fetishise angst, depression and pain has a screw loose.

I'm not trying to say that marylin manson is to blame, just that goth culture is retarded and fills peoples heads with stupid ideas, and when young kids turn to that sort of thing, it's hardly surprising that one or two with a screw loose eventually go over the edge. I reckon its a mixture of his goth self-styling and hash smoking that caused all this.

  13. Ok, excerpts from the profile at this url http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/4187007.stm

His fascination with the darker areas of human behaviour was also reflected in his opinions on religion.

His school jotter was covered in Satanic slogans, with the numbers 666 and references to the Devil.

He also wrote an essay questioning God's existence and saying the world needed Satanic people - "People like you need Satanic people like me to keep the balance."

The word Satan was written across the back of a jotter with the phrase: "I have tasted the Devil's green blood."

In another essay, Mitchell wrote: "So what if I am a Goth in a Catholic school? So what if I dress in baggy clothes?

"Just because I am more violent than others and cut myself, does that justify some pompous git of a teacher to refer me to a psychiatrist?

"Just because I have chosen to follow the teachings of Satan doesn't mean I need psychiatric help."

He also admitted stubbing out cigarettes on his hand as a "party trick" and had scratched the numbers 666 on his upper-right forearm with a compass.

So...you don't think marlyin manson/that kind of music culture has influenced his lifestyle atall? It said he smoked 4.5 Oz of hash a week, that is more than enough to trigger a psychotic episode in an unstable person (as he clearly was).

All that goth/angsty/nihilistic subculture is completely tied to the music, it's frankly retarded to suggest that there isn't a connection between the two.

  14. I ain't saying "get a grip" or anything hackneyed like that' date=' the point is that giving people lots of sympathy and attention if they pull a stunt like that sends out completely the wrong message. They equate self-harming with nice things such as tea and sympathy so they'll have no qualms about choosing to repeat harmful behaviour.

I also question the fact that nobody "enjoys" feeling miserable. I've seen it meet a need in certain people, they get SOMETHING out of it.

Obviously, I can't go into too much detail here, but I'll give you an example. Someone I used to work with liked the old 10 paracetamols a go. They CHOSE to neck paras, while having enough other drugs to knock out an elephant or two. They knew exactly what they were doing, deliberately not taking enough to do actual harm, just enough to get the attention they were seeking.

You wouldn't last 5 minutes in a job like this. They would run rings around you.[/quote']

So what are you suggesting? Ignore them, tell them to fuck off, watch them die? Call them a fucking arsehole? I know plenty of people that have attempted suicide, some more than once, and some who actually died because they jumped infront of a train or hung themselves. I know the difference between a real suicide and a cry for help, but what else can you do but sympathise? What do you normally do in such cases? Send them on their way with a pack of SSRI's?

    Hrmmm, lunch

    3133catnoodles.jpg

  15. As has already been well said by others in this thread' date=' there are two kinds of "suicide attempt". The first is a genuine attempt, characterised by its high success rate. The second is your bog-standard, cliched, cry-for-help wrist-scratcher. This does not seem a genuine attempt. I've seen plenty of the attention-seeker in my work as a mental health carer so I fucking know what I'm talking about here. I have every empathy for those in genuine distress. You soon see through the manipulators who are just fucking coming it, otherwise you'd make a pretty useless support worker. My job is to support and encourage people leaving institutions to achieve their independence, we don't fucking pander to those who are indulging.

I've been through some pretty rough lows in my time, yes. However, I took what seems a rather novel approach in this day and age of recreational emotion. I shut the fuck up and just got on with things. I emerged a much stronger person for it. Not fashionable I know, seems that being neurotic is something to aspire to these days. I choose not to let things get the better of me.[/quote']

"get a grip, pull yourself together" etc doesn't really cut it.

Regardless of motive, if someone is going to the extent of cutting themselves, or overdosing, no matter if they call someone for help, they still have a problem and need help.

    Nobody enjoys being miserable.

I wonder what you consider to be a "manipulator" who is just "playing up"? How do you determine that?

  16. Snivelling little self-pitying shit. Why can't he go and self-harm somewhere quietly? Oh' date=' because no-one will find out about it.[/quote']

Yeah I guess anyone having suicidal thoughts should just fuck off and die in a corner quietly, or cut themselves up out of sight, yeah?

I have to say, I'm pretty disgusted but not surprised, at the insensitivity and lack of understanding being exhibited by some people in this thread. You've obviously never been there yourselves.

  18. Can anyone suggest how to convert bass tab into just the notes to play, eg:

    G------------------------------------------

    D------------------------------------------

    A--------3-3-0-3-3-5---------------------

    E-----3-----------------3-3---------------

how could I work out what actual note is being played?

  19. The only realistic way to recover the vocal in pristine condition, is taking the instrumental of the track (it has to be exactly the same recording, just without the vocal), inverting the phase and then mixing it together with the vocal version. Trying to EQ or filter out the instruments will just sound totally ropey.

dang you beat me to it spellchecker ;)

  20. it tries far to hard to appear shocking' date=' but it fails, its not funny and it doesn't make any great statements about anything (i'm not saying that the creators were trying to, but fans of the show often say that it does).[/quote']

Part's of it aren't meant to be funny, more observational. There are so many cold hard truths contained in some of the sketches, about the state of our society. Maybe you should stick to southpark if you don't "get it".
