  1. Jesus, a good question.

I've got say Sugarhill Gang's Rapper's Delight or Jump On It, Grand Master Flashe's "White Lines (Don't Do It) or De La Soul's Three Feet High and Rising Album are all my "big dumb grin" songs and albums. "Ceremony" by New Order makes me want to just sit and watch the world contently. Dead Kennedy's "Plastic Surgey Disasters" makes me glad to be who I am, with the ability and knowlege go express disattisfaction with my surrounds or try and create something that shows it.

  2. I would really like a place to practice for a lot longer and cheaper than we usually manage. Toms is great for live practice but if your writing/arranging it can be costly.

As someone in a band using Tom's to write, you don't have to tell me twice. I'm fortunate to be in a five piece though, so it turns out pretty reasonable.

  3. well...we only have two written and a couple of covers....but i'd say OWA's 'thief of hearts'' date=' because we have it down, it's pretty free going so if i fuck up the lyrics or change them um....no one notices! plus it's just awesome.[/quote']

I also like it because I hardly have to do any work until the end! It's great! I can sip champagne or play Metroid: Zero Mission until I do distorted guitar flailing at the end! It's also a song that everyone seems to get caught up in, which is ace.

I'm really digging a couple of currently unnamed song parts we've go because they're oozing potential, but TOH wins out.

  4. I learn by pissing around for hours. I mean' date=' I pick up bits and pieces along the way, but as for 'practicing', I can never get into a routine with that. Its like goin to the gym, only die hards keep it up. I think my style is original in the sense I've never bothered to learn a full song by anyone. I got a 4track after playing guitar for about 2 years so all I've ever done is create, rather than learn iron maiden solos.[/quote']

I'm in a similar boat. I practise quite a lot of theory, and PARTS of songs sometimes for examples of tricky chord changes, but I'm more intresting in creating than copying.

  5. one of it's supporters is a former Ramone.

    A former Misfit too!

Anyway, the way I've always understood punk is probably best described as a bizarre form of "late twentith century folk music", although by it's nature, not necessarily dated. It was about creating something from scratch, it, to me, is a mode and not a genre, although many people believe it is. Similar mindsets can be found in No Wave and even Garage, from how I understand it. The music might not be three-chord rock'n roll, but the DIY ethic is there.

It seems odd (and elitist) to say that music about self expression belongs to any one political wing, so for example, so for example, a member of the far right wished to commit his incoherent paranoid ramblings to a backing track he made in his room on his apple mac and pressed and distrubuted 200 copies by himself, surely there is an element of punk to that, although I personally would be put off by his political stance. I've only heard about them, but weren't screwdriver a DIY far-right band? And wouldn't bands with extreme far right views be FORCED into self publishing because the labels wouldn't touch 'em 'cos of their views (although having heard Tobey Kieth....)

  6. Yes lepeep' date=' exactly. Its the over-the-topness that is the annoying bit, not the actual fact that they are gay.

But if I didn't like someone (who is gay) for being really, really gay - then it wouldn't mean I hate gay [i']people at all, just the fact that I find OTT gayness annoying. Yet I'd probably get called a homophobe for disliking someone because I find their OTT gayness a personality trait.

[i am speaking hypothetically here by the way]

I just find it hypocritical that you are not allowed to dislike people of a certain sexuality, race or whatever. It's positive discrimination. If someone is a complete arse then you should be allowed to dislike them regardless of what sexuality or race they are.

For the record, I too find this personality type irritating, but I think calling it "gay" was the wrong choice of word when "camp" may have been more suitable, and probably stopped some people from getting sucked into the mighty "arguhole". From experience, I've only ever seen one gay person behave like that in real life (plenty on TV). Would you believe that the "deviants" have adapted so they can blend in with us upright Christians! :moody: ;p

I haven't been watching big brother. I know who Kitten and Marco are but if I wanted to watch retards compete for attention, I'd go to Ministry, but remember big brother is cast through auditions. That big brother dude was probably chosen because he's so over the top.

  7. I would agree that many punk outfits do indeed oversimplify issues of political concern' date=' possibly lacking a greater understanding of said issues. However this cannot be said of all. Many many do demonstrate an intelligence and crucial grasp of these topics. Jello and co were but one example. Crass another.[/quote']

Totally. DK are one band who inspire me to look into what they sing about, and do it with just the right amount of humour so they don't sound like Modern Studies teachers. I've never actully heard Crass, must remedy that. Anyway, I agree there ARE bands who sing with a lot of depth.

  8. Since you say any kind of punk:

The Faint - Danse Mcabre (Electro punk)

    .

    One of my favorite bands, although I never thought about them being punk, but I guess there is a punk aesthetic to most Saddle Creek bands. Anyway;

Dead Kennedys - Plastic Surgery Disasters

Desparecidos - Read Music, Speak Spanish

Life Without Buildings - Any Other City

The Faint - Danse Macabre (although their best song is on "Blank Wave Arcade")

Atari Teenage Riot - 60 Second Wipeout

    ATDI- In/Casino/Out

    Minor Threat - Discography

Sunny Day Real Estate - Diary

    Get Up Kids - STWHA

    Green Day - Nimrod

  9. Intresting. They claim that one of their aims is to get people to vote and become engaged in politics (which is always good) and to get people and to "draw their own conclusions". Those are inital aims I find very hard to argue with. Many young people really don't care about politics or voting, and many people take what NOFX and Michael Moore tell them at face value, even if I do believe they are the "good guys".

I also think the following statement, is in many cases true:

"Punk music has been, and still is, one of the most heavy-handed genres of music there is. Unfortunately the topics of such heavy-handed songs are almost always seeped in left wing propaganda, bumper sticker rallying calls and oversimplifications of otherwise complex topics. Unfortunately the websites established by such bands to further their political views don't offer much more by way of information and truth than the music does."

See, not thinking about things and having an unswerving allegiance to any one side of the political spectrum can lead to Kitten from BB style slapability, posting heavy handed, ugly posters with George Bush with demon horns kissing Ronald McDonald or something and generally growing bored and growing up to drive an SUV. So I think encouraging people to learn and draw their own conclusions with the raw material provided to them as a starting point by bands, be it the Dead Kennedys or NOFX is a good thing.

    BUT,

The notion of Conservative punk is pretty screwy, but who are we to impose rules on anything? If a group of youths were disatissfied with the left and wanted to write songs in favour of the right, then let 'em, although I'm pretty certain they wouldn't have me in their audience.

I notice Michale Graves (ex-Misfits) is a supporter of the site.

    Anyway, simplified conclusion:

Providing an alternative, encouraging people to think rather than just spout slogans: GOOD

    Being Conservatives: NOT SO GOOD

  10. From creed.com:

    June 4, 2004

SCOTT STAPP AND MARK TREMONTI READY NEW MATERIAL FOR FIRST POST-CREED RELEASES

One of the most successful songwriting partnerships and groups in the history of the music business disbands after nearly a decade together.

New York --- After nearly a decade together, Creed has decided to disband.

HALLEUJAH! It's like God finally got embarrassed enough to do something about them so planted thoughts in their brain to split!

  11. To be honest no i didnt' date=' i also didnt read half the posts, mainly only the ones that were directed at me, just could not arsed. Theres too much reading and im to tired and at the end of the day all i ever tried to say was that homosexuality is a natural defect due to having no real purpose other than pleasure. How can you say its not? If we were all gay, the world would end - fact. This goes against anythign nature stands for - survival. sex has become on object of huge desire, yet at the same time its become plain dirty. I mean, porn is trashy, sleazy yet at the end of the day sex (between opposite sexes) is a natural occurence - abseolutley nothign dirty or sleazy about it. For all I know I'm gay, if I am I will accept that there is some sore of defect in me and get stuck in. However, I feel quite sure this is not the case.[/quote']

I can say sex has other purposes than procreation through the evidence I've cited and personal experience, really.

If we were all gay, the world would not end, although mankind would become extinct, however, that's an absurd argument. If Godzilla was real, the world would end too. What's your point?

  12. no' date=' just pointing out that gay sex does nothign for the future of the race, for which wat sex is intended. Sex is only fun, so that we do it, the fact we have chosen to abuse this (for which im not complaining) using condoms and such is irrelevant.[/quote']

Ok, so why the aversion to homosexuality if it's okay by you to have sex not to reproduce?

Also, did you read any of the links I posted or any of the facts Nullmouse posted?

  13. One of the major functions of sexual relations and sexual intercourse is reproduction of the species.

Homosexuals typically have sex and sexual relations.

No homosexual sexual activity can lead to the fulfillment of the sexual function known as 'reproduction'.

Therefore' date=' Homosexuality is, at least in one way, a reproductive sexual disorder.[/quote']

Jesus, me and my girlfriend better stop doing this shit for fun. In fact, I'll just go and burn any contraceptives I can find and make sure she see's any baby she conceives right through until the end of it's term so it can be brought into a life devoid of parental love. Better tell the dolphins who I hear have sex for fun to quit it and kill the next puppy I see hump a teddy bear.

    While I'm here:

    http://www.chick.com/reading/tracts/1052/1052_01.asp (it's unintentionally funny)

  14. I've went back and read more than the first couple of pages of the thread. I'm certainly not qualified to substantuate any scientific claims made here, but those claims have certainly been made by people who are, whoever, I'm seeing a lot of repetition of people claiming to hate "The gays that flaunt it like Graham Norton".

    This got me thinking.

    a) You're dislike of a personality trait is about as important as your like or dislike of carrot and corriander soup. Please don't confuse your opinion with a fact.

    b) A media icon playing up to an image is not a good or reliable sample type. Fact is, you'd be hard pressed to tell when someone is actully "gay", being "camp" is an entirely diffrent matter.

    c) Is there such a thing as a gay subculture? I'm not suggesting homosexuality is a subculture in the slightest, yet isn't it possible that subcultures exist in the gay scene? If so, then surely someone could, if we adhere to the stereotypes set up here, love Kylie Minouge, bleach their hair and drink fuzzy navels in their youth to establish their place before growing out of it?

  15. I honestly dont see what your huge problem with homosexuality is. Many young hetrosexual's push their sexuality in people's face's' date=' isnt that as bad as homosexuals doing it? Sexuality as many people already have said shudent be such a big deal. It should just be accepted as long as no one is harmed by it. And saying that the people who get beaten for being gay deserve it, is an absolutly stupid point to make. These people don't need to suffer others ignorance. No one does.

p.s. How can a chemical attraction be aquired through circumstances? (cause after all thats all attraction basicly is, a chemical reaction)[/quote']

    Well said,

The evidence I've seen supporting the "it's not natural" argument is very weak and destroyed in the face of, well, facts such as those given by Nullmouse. It also beggars a satisfactory definition of "natural", which I'd sincerely like to see for the sake of discussion.

Where to turn then, protecting our kids, like the often brilliant Frosty Jack said "from what?".

I think what is being suggested is a sense of moral protection, but outside of religious texts, what principal is being drawn on here? Can anyone explain to me why homosexuality is morally wrong outside of personal statements like "it's sick"?

  16. I think it is becoming cool to be gay. Look at emowear / general male fashion - pretty feminine huh? its as though men are losing the desire to be masculine and women are losing the attraction to masculinity.

Homosexuality is sad' date=' its like someone born with 3 eyes, a defect. Its become socially acceptable because theres so many, and im not homophobic, but it is sad - as in unhappy sad not, 'check u bunch of saddos.'[/quote']

Your first point is flawed, I think. Homosexuality isn't about men being attracted to feminine men in the male case, wouldn't they then be attracted to girls? Think along the lines of the muscly builder stereotype if you really must think in those terms, but I really think you're a little guilty of buying into the "are you being served" stereotype.

Your second point, isn't something I agree with, but I'll respect your right to believe it.

    One thing I have observed:

The rock scene attracts a lot more lesbians, and in many cases "faux-lesbians" than gay men. I'm not sure why this is, but people still seem to treat lesbianism as kinky while male homosexuality is more widely demonised, which I can't see being cool for anyone who's gay. Just a thought.

Overall, I expected a more liberal, and in many cases, educated attitude from a lot of you.
