  1. If they do that then its going to be covers bands' date=' tribute bands and indie all the way i'm afraid..... not good for the future of live music in Aberdeen.[/quote']

In other words they are thinking very short term / easy life and quick cash, but not thinking of the potential, like if they did something a wee bit braver or more ambitious (with higher initial risk obviously)....thankfully a few promoters think more ambitiously than others and funnily enough its the ones with the least funding who seem to take the risks where the ones with lots of funding (including our council tax) take no risks at all and as a result cheat us with the lowest common denominator every time.

    I think we are agreeing?

  2. No venue can put on quality (in your opinion) 7 nights a week' date=' 52 weeks of the year.

If quality is controlled rigidly, no new band would ever play live again.[/quote']

Point 1 - I think trying to put bands on 7 nights a week is ambitious and commendable but flawed in a town this size with this many venues

Point 2 - Quality control can be on a sensible scale and not just over simplified as ON or OFF. A lot of stuff has fallen below a certain threshold over the last few years IMO and a lot of people I know who have simply given up on bands now just go clubbing instead. If things are picking up....fantastic and a round of applause to everyone.

  3. thats why you should come on friday' date=' because none of the bands are metal and their lyrical content consists of lies, dancing naked with the polis in Govan, Arnold Schwarzenegger and feeling guilty about being sceptical of seeing an arab man wearing a backpack on a bus.[/quote']

Sounds cool but Im likely to be heading to the Tunnels for some reggae vibes

spoilt for choice all of a sudden

    fuck!

    hmm

  4. i dunno about this

im sure there are 'shit' band palying in aberdeen as we speak..

but all the 'shit' bands i have come across in the past year or so are not 'shit' at all

    just not to my taste?

sure you mean that rather than 'THEY ARE SHIT?'

    Get real man!

    No

I mean bands that are amaturishly shit at what they do. Whether it rock/indie/punk whatever. Just poor.

Whether its my taste or not. Example: I generally detest all forms of metal and rock and so sensibly avoid it, but if I accidentally saw a metal band that was really very good, Id recognise that fact (even if I was still laughing at the demonic whisky drinking lyrics and guitar neck wanking). Id actually say (hypothetically of course) ''not my bag but shit hot at what they do''

    if that ever happened...

apparently all bands are officially ace now anyway

  5. wowee!

sounds like things have taken a huge turn for the better

to be honest its about three months since Ive been to a gig (very skint and very busy) so maybe Ive missed out on the revival

so can we safely say that bands and promoters are all very happy about how well their gigs are supported? Yaaaaay!!!!! So can they pleeeeeeeeeeeeeease never mention it again! No more sob stories about how tough it is being a venue owner/promoter/band mamber.....well thank fuck for that!

    hooray!

the last 10 years of bleakness all swept away in a thread!

genuinely hope its true, first night in the town for ages for me this friday (and saturday wowee!) so I suppose ill find out soon enough.

    Im exited now...really!

  6. The best form of quality control is' date=' don't go to gigs unless you think you might like the bands.[/quote']

....however the public have voted with their feet, and all the muppets are crying that the venues are genarally empty, while theres thousands of music lovers in this city who now avoid gigs like the plague

maybe there actually something wrong with putting on a lot of low quality shite for a quick buck and hoping the public keeps on swallowing it

quality control should come from the promoters and venues* who have a responsibilty to provide something decent....for their own long term business aims if nothing else

*some promoters/venues have sussed this already

  7. I'm a bit confused by this mid 90's highpoint thing of the Aberdeen scene' date=' honestly i must have been seeing different bands! i was thinking about this the other day- there about five or six bands that are kicking about right now that i really like and would have no hesitation in dragging "non aberdeen music scene memebers" along to see them- things are a lot better. circa 91-99 there was nothing interesting happening. i see it like this, if i saw Project ven hell on tv i'd grin, i'd be chuffed as fuck for them ( and not cringing), this was not the reaction when i saw Coast on telly....

there are more bands, this means there a lot of shit bands- but also happily there are more good bands. but the hated "aberdeen sound" of the 90's has been pretty much erased, bands are a lot more clued up now. and all that.

i'm getting major deja vu with this whole thing, didnt Dr Drakes get a telling off for putting on skate punk years ago on here, ach well.[/quote']

early to mid ninetees, I purposely never mentioned the appalling late ninetees, the era where everything went down the bog in the run up to skatepunk and nu metal etc

its not like there was any halcyion days for aberdeen musically, its just that there was a time when it seems less cringe inducing to go out and catch a live band than it does now....it was never brilliant, the few decent bands that played the one or two decent venues were probably weegies for all I know, but there was far less chance of the casual punter having to suffer wank metal, tribute bands or wee skoolie bands and the underage hordes

to be fair there was still only ever half a dozen decent bands kicking around, its just that there was far less shit ones getting payed to be shit, probably

    quality control etc.

  8. Cloud... You never have anything worthy to add' date=' or very little at the most, to any discourse. You have opinions on most topics based on zero experience so you simply look stupid and do yourself no favours. Wheeeesht![/quote']

Id noticed that too. He is pointless and should be removed.

  9. I've heard people on here suggest that aberdeen has a "thriving" or "vibrant" music scene. I disagree. I think this is a delusion which has it's roots in a toxic mixture of mediocre "artists" or "bands"' date=' venues who are too willing to allow anyone to play, and networks of obsequious friends and naive children.

There are threads on here where people complain about poor attendance at gigs. Stop complaining! The attendance is poor because nobody gives a fuck about your pathetic band and your bullshit songs. It's that simple.

The venues that give a platform to this mediocrity are part of the problem. I'm sure they have their own, perhaps misguided motives that somehow allow them to justify putting on gigs with bands that draw miniscule, and often underage audiences. But really, is it actually financially viable to put on some crap bands early in the evening for an audience of kids that don't use the bar?

The level of creativity among the so called musicians that constitute the local "music scene" is utterly pathetic, with some very rare exceptions.

There is an obvious disregard for recordings aswell which I find bizarre. Perhaps these bands prefer to let promoters and venues take the risk on putting on gigs rather than commiting themselves to creating a definitive recording.

    Anyway, your thoughts?[/quote']

Broadly speaking that is spot on if not a bit harshly worded. But yeh.

There are some exceptions obviously but the above definition covers at least 50% of whats happening in aberdeen. IE the majority.

So then add the 25% of covers and tribute bands put on mostly by the forward thinking Melon Tree, and you're left with a reasonable and random 25% selection of stuff that comes under the catagory of actual entertainment. Thats not bad IMO and just means you have to be discerning about what you attend and where you go for a nite out. Most towns are the same. Gone are the days (early to mid ninetees prob) when you could just wander into an aberdeen venue and more than likely accidentally see something decent. Its rare now. So much so that Id rather go to a club than be exposed the the 75/25 chance of a band being very shit or as decribed by Stripey (50/50 at best)?

    Yo

  10. Come and see oor SKA band this Thursday in Drummonds' date='I could duff ye up a bit and steal yer drink if ye want he he he.[/quote']

Im out of town on thursday for a vital UEFA cup game, but I dont like SKA anyway unless its played by dead guys from the 60s and was recorded with one microphone. How many genres of bands are you in?

  11. I was there, probably just out of shot, although i didnt look too different to what i do now.

It was an incredible thing that they came here and one of the cities most awesome gigs ever. I also saw em play in Birmingham quite a few years before that and Poison Ivy was only wearing transparent baby doll underwear and no pants. I basically just stared at her fanny for the whole set. It was the first fanny (that wasnt in a magazine) Id ever seen (I was only about 13 or something). Ive never been the same since. Lux also vomitted on me. They played The Crusher as the opening tune. RAAAAAAPE!!!! I shat myself. loads of people got kicked in by the LEGION OF THE CRAMPED. Cool. I miss violence at gigs.

Agree they were in decline from an album perspective at the time, but waht a hellish live band......

  12. I tend to start of with someone I'm irritated/pissed off with... then write lyrics along with music... take out any segments which are too specific to the situaton... replace with nice words like "lollypop" or "shit" and KAPOW... you have yourself some lyrics.

I rather like my lyrics... all lyrics are dependant with how many beats there are in that section and thus there is a need to swap out words etc etc.

I also find our sessions where we shout random filth and shit at each other for about an hour with the only criteria being ''say awful stuff that you cant actually use in a song'' followed by quickly writing down all the really bad bits.

Definately the most amusing way of being creative.

  13. Come on Mr Betamax' date=' dont you smell a gig in the air?[/quote']

Nope. Last year was a good laugh but hey, never tell the same joke twice.

Im actually looking forward to GN. Last year was fine, some good bands, some shit bands and some beers, typical festival so Im not sure why a lot of punters get so wound up about it.

  14. I really hated Experience at the time' date=' probably due to the song "out of space"....but the rest of the album is amazing, and I agree, very ahead of its time if you consider the rest of what was happening in "rave" at the time (something I stayed well the fuck away from...) 'Horns of Jericho' sounds awesome through the moorings PA :D

Man in me avatar is a bit of a genius...even if he doesn't half like bragging about it aswell! :)[/quote']

Aye I detested the rave scene too (very fake), but I loved the early Prodigy stuff cos theres something furiously demented about it, that just refuses to date.

He might be a genius but his bird is dork!

  15. The Prodigy - Experience / Music for the Jilted Generaton

All great forgotten albums from my youth which I now own in smaller CD form :D

Im having a similar revival of those two. A sound thats still way ahead of its time.

Reminds me of feeling overly happy and de-hydrated in the Hoochi on Windmill Brae. Now Moshulu.

  16. Any specific models' date=' I'd need a fair bit of memory?[/quote']

Look for a second hand Akai S5000 or S6000 thats had its memory expanded (most have)

Dunno how much dosh is reasonable though although I know the sampler market crashed in the last few years but now people have sussed out how versatile and timeless they are so are snapping them up again so prices might be on the up again.

I just took delivery of a nu MPC4000PLUS...immense. Uploaed a perfectly sampled full scale Grand Piano with oodles of memory to spare.
