Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, you can't beat Tears of a Clown
The Supremes, The Temptations and Martha Reeves and the Vendellas are worth a swatch too.
Marvin Gaye, The Supremes, The Temptations and the great Smokey Robinson and the Miracles oh yes...I Second That Emotion
I got a Smokey Robinson compilation (The Tracks of My Tears) a few years back which features most of the Motown great artists, but Smokey ...what a voice and a songwriter!
And don't forget the fabulous The Funk Brothers studio band were immense with the great James Jamerson. YouTube - James Jamerson
Then of course there's Stax. 60s and early 70s soul is class.
There's a program on BBC2 tonight about 11 on the Detroit scene (Motown to the Stooges).

I think my first was The Michael Schenker Group - "MSG" purchased from Music Matters in Buckie. Still have it too and it features Chris Glen from SAHB but not my taste now, a bit thin and basically average
-
I would say Elbow should get it but I think it'll be Last Shadow Puppets as they seem to be the darlings of the music media at the mo.
-
Nah Lennon would take them all, he was supposed to be handy with his fists.
-
"It breaks my heart that he wasn't one of the Traveling Wilburys Traveling Wilburys (he would have been a nice foil for George Harrison's cheesy pap tendencies, and he knew Dylan better than any of those guys)"
Bullshit on both counts.
OK he's a good guitar player but not to my tastes.
I never liked Dire Straits but always felt they had an appropriate name.
-
A big YES fae me too. So what's the gen?
-
I have just aquired (is that spelt right?) the Ghostbusters theme tune on 7". The B-Side is an instrumental version. Yas!
.
I've got the Batman theme on 7" picture disc and The Dickies - Banana Splits Theme on Yellow Vinyl

Influenced by the likes of Jeff Buckley, Tom McRae, Radiohead and Aerogramme, Chris has an amazing voice and his songs are fresh with melodies and lyrics that will stay with you for a long time. Chris has supported the likes of Regina Spektor and Craig B from Aerogramme plus he has also done development work with Parlophone Records.
Chris has recently put together a band and filmed a video for his superb song Teargas, which can be seen on his website. His next project will be finishing and promoting his new 6 track EP which is due to be released in the summer. Chris has played a few gigs in the Highlands but although his girlfriend is from Elgin this will be his first trip to Moray and hes looking forward to the experience.

CALLmeBOB
CALLmeBOB are a lively 3 piece pUNK/emo Speyside based band led by former Blue Gum Ears bassist AJ. After a few acoustic jams Scampi and AJ decided to recruit a drummer. Jock was that man. A long spell of writing and jamming followed and then CALLmeBOB were ready to gig. Mixing their influences together they create a sound and image that they, and hopefully the gig going public, appreciate. Using vocal harmonies to their full effect with two lead vocals interacting throughout their songs backed up by metal drumming, ska/pUNK bass and heavy/sweet earthy guitar. The band is planning to record their debut album in the summer and start playing Aberdeen and beyond.

HUBL Acoustic Gig - Red Shoes 14th June - Talent required!
Highland Ultimate Band List (HUBL), the Moray based music website is teaming
up with Red Shoes Theatre Company in Elgin for an acoustic showcase on
Saturday the 14th June. HUBL the free online resource for use by the music
fans and musicians of Moray and the Highlands was created by Chris Thornton
of Colourjam in 2003. The interactive website includes Band Profiles, Gig
Listings, MP3 Chart, Forum and Reviews. HUBL is designed to support and
promote the music community and has organised gigs and also released the
HUBL CD to showcase the talent in the area.
At present HUBL has 166 members and features a very diverse range of
artists. This is reflected in the top 3 of March's MP3 chart, which was
topped by cosmic sonic groove merchants The Phoenix Band with "Your build
like a car oh yeah" followed by rock/metal band Mind Gone Blind and the
experimental soundscapes of Achenar.
This is the first HUBL event of 2008 and they are looking for solo
performers and bands with original material to fill the night. Any artist
interested should email a MP3, biography and contact details to
email@hubl.co.uk. Closing date for entries is April 30th and the line up
will be announced shortly after.
This is an excellent opportunity to play a great wee venue, which reeks of
musical history including legendary performances by The Beatles, The Who,
The Pink Floyd and Cream. Since reopening The Red Shoes Theatre Company has
brought a much needed live venue to Elgin and as well as theatre and gigs
has recently started acoustic evenings every Friday 5pm til 7pm at their Cafe Rouge.

I've got a rare Frank Turner demo.
Listening to it, it's a relief that it's rare.
That's generally why stuff is rare, it sold poorly and a lot of it coz it's shite

I've got a few bits n pieces including:
Pallas - "Reds Under Your Beds" EP, plus the Arrive Alive Cassette and singles and indeed pretty much everything up to and including The Wedge
Rolling Stones - She Was Hot 12" White label
Metallica - Creeping Death / Am I Evil / Blitzkrieg10" Gold Vinyl Anniversary Edition

Her name was Mia
from North Korea
I said, Come over
Bring your Land Rover
I don't like sushi
She said, that suits me
I take a shower
On every hour
Oh, the Oriental, very very special
If you ever get some
You want another one and another one
The Oriental, very very gentle
I got one for a cousin
Can you send me a dozen?
Her name was Mae Wong
She came from Hong Kong
She was a raver
Of Eastern flavour
I said, I love you
She said, I'd love to
Go down to Texas
Must have one Lexus
Oh, the Oriental, so very very special
If you ever get some
You want another one and another one
The Oriental, very very gentle
I like it spicy
That'll do me nicely
I'm gonna cross the water, take a plane to Tokyo
And find a little geisha, I love to see them go
And carry on to China, Asia Minor and some more
Then finish with a sling in Singapore
Oh, the Oriental, very very special
If you ever get some
You want another one and another one
The Oriental, very very gentle
I got one for a cousin
Can you send me a dozen?
Oh, the Oriental will drive you mental
I really gotta get one
And then another one and another one
Oh, the Oriental, can you get them on a rental?
Don't send me a Russian
Ain't no discussion
Got to be an Oriental
Well that's also the worst lyrics I have ever seen...contrived and soooo shite. Unnaceptable on every level

Tommy Johnson actually existed, and there is a theory that much of the mythology centred around Robert Johnson was originally ascribed to Tommy. He only made a handful of recordings (I think there are eight songs which are definitely him on the tape) and he most likely a big influence on his namesake, who started recording several years later.
Other noteable Johnsons include Lonnie Johnson (whose name the then Tony Donegan adopted in tribute) and Blind Wilie Johnson, whose work includes blues standards such as "John The Revelator" and "Nobody's Fault But Mine".
And yes, I missed out Scrapper Blackwell. Sorry Alan, he should have been there. :O
That's a new one to me but you obviously know your stuff...cheers.
And Nobody's Fault But Mine...don't get me started on Led Zeppelin and their "songwriting" credits.
-
I go with the above... was average bluesman, disappeared, practiced a lot, came back made a reputation and some recordings then killed by jealous husband/lover. Die young, live forever...standard rock path to icon and mythology.
There's a character in the wonderful film O Brother Where Art Thou that's based on him ...Tommy Johnson, even goes to the Crossroads.
-
As above, pompous overblown and tasteless but they had a few ace songs like You're My Best Friend, Under Pressure and Seven Seas of Rye.
But I do find their morals loose and selective. They played Sun City during the apartheid years in South Africa, so took their pieces of white man's silver (along with a few others including Rod Stewart)...then they played Live Aid for the poor Africans and gave their career a massive boost.
-
Would Jethro Tull's 'Aqualung' (1971) count?
I wouldn't include that as it's meant to be that way, a social commentary (like Fiddle About by The Who), whereas the rest are examples of lyrics that were perfectly acceptable in their day (apart from WASP who just went for shock value).
-
Is that not a song about his daughter? Apart from that the man is MOR personified.
-
What about W.A.S.P and the glorious atrocity that is Animal (F***like a beast)? Ah heavy metal that subtle and thoughtful genre...
I got pictures of naked ladies
Lying on their beds
I whiff that smell and sweet convulsion
Starts a-Swelling inside my head
I'm making artificial lovers for free
I start to howl I'm in heat
I moan and growl and the hunt drives me crazy
I f*** like a Beast
I come round, round i come feel your love
Tie you down, down i come steal your love
I come round, round i come feel your love
Tie you down, down i come steal your love
I'm on the prowl and i watch you closely
I lie waiting for you
I'm the wolf with the sheepsskins clothing
I lick my chops and your tasting good
I do whatever i want to, to ya
I'll nail your ass to the sheets
A pelvic thrust and the sweat starts to sting ya
I f*** like a beast
I come round, round i come feel your love
Tie you down, down i come steal your love
I come round, round i come feel your love
Tie you down, down i come steal your love
Come ride, savage seduction
Ride, ride, ride

I've seen them playing that ready for the floor song on about four different shows in the last two weeks, and I don't even watch that much tv. Their second song was gash.
That song gives me flashbacks to OMD (Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark) of Enola Gay fame, it's mainly the guys vocals.
-
To be honest i think the show's pretty decent, however, it does seem that the shit outweighs the not shit. Though i have to say that on the show i dont mind mister holland either. Despite coming off as a self righteous knob half the time.
What was his old band called again? Was it Squeeze or something?
Yes, he was in Squeeze who were quite good at the time.
