  2. This sums it up.

Listen on good headphones/speakers and turn up and just admire...! Praise the lord for this remastering!

    Amen

Great call, I played it to my mate the other day just to blow his head off...then followed by Golden Slumber/Carry That Weight and The End. Sublime, power and majesty :)

  3. Could just be shrewd marketing, but it could turn out to be a good move. Amazon \US has sold out its allocation, so if it's truly a limited edition I guess it could be worth more than you paid for it in years to come.

Yeah there is that although I have a lot of stuff of that nature and I doubt I'll ever sell...just keep hording :)

The main thing is that I do want to hear the mono versions as they were how The Beatles worked and thus they are how they wanted us to hear the songs. The Purple Chick mono versions were very enlightening and in some cases very different, so I look forward to the official ones. One negative to the mono box set is that Let It Be and Abbey Road are not included as they were stereo only releases, thus I will still have to shell out more  Having the tape and CD of the original Let It Be plus Naked, Abbey Road will be the priority though and I'm sure will be well worth it as it's a superb album.

  4. I'm swithering whether to make a purchase but if I do it'll be the mono versions as they were the ones The Beatles concentrated their time on... and left the stereo ones to George Martin. The price though....how many times are we supposed to pay top dollar for the same basic product? There is very little in the way of extras (some short videos) and I think EMI missed a chance to give us value for money with something new.

The reason for the remastering is that the current CD versions are a tad lacking in depth especially bass. I've got the majority of the recent Purple Chick remasters, which were done to compensate for EMI dragging their heels and there is a huge difference. So it'll be cool to hear the official ones.

Remastering can be a dangerous process though. I remember hearing the remastered 70's ZZ Top albums done in the late 80s and the drum sound was appalling, indeed unlistenable.

  5. Surely this must be conclusive proof from Mr Motorhead:

Interviewer: I've also heard that you are a huge Beatles fan?

Lemmy: "Best band ever on the earth"

"They would come on stage and you were just awestruck," he remembers. "They had that presence, which is very rare.

    Macca thumbs aloft

  6. Wholeheartedly agree with Bigsby.

The Stones is a good argument actually because of their consistency, but I think the Beatles win for all the reasons Bigsby mentions in his first post.

They were only famous for about 10 years, but they were slogging it out before then. And although they were only releasing albums for about 10 years, they punted out I think 13 studio albums in that time, and in my opinion all of them are very good. They have 2 double albums worth of greatest hits in the red and blue albums which are brilliant start to finish. All that in 10 years is pretty good going.

I do also agree that Macca turned a bit pish on his own. Lennon was better, but nowhere near as good as the Beatles, but we're not arguing about their solo stuff - that's what makes a band a band. The two of them together, plus George Harrison of course, wrote a massive amount of brilliant pop songs. How'd you reckon Mick Jagger would get on in a solo career?

10 year is a tad too much...7 years is pushing it as they only started recording in late 1962 and finished in August 1969. Phenomenal output though, as they released non album singles and b sides plus no singles from Pepper or The White Album.

The Word this month has a feature on how they are underrated and methinks a lot of people seem to miss the importance and impact The Beatles had on music and culture. Like that earlier post about them just being lucky...they worked their arses off and had genuine talent, vision and class.

The solo stuff has never reached the heights but there's a few decent albums although most of it in the early 70s like Plastic Ono Band, Imagine, Ram, Band On The Run and All Things Must Pass.

As for the Stones, always the bridesmaid really....the Beatles got them signed (George Harrison tipped off Decca), gave them their first big hit (I Wanna Be Your Man), influenced them to write and then got publicity through manager and ex NEMS employee Andrew Loog Oldham to build up the phoney image war. They of course became a great band but I'm glad The Beatles split up when they did and left an almost perfect legacy rather than flogging a dead horse like the Stones.

"...I Roll a Stoney, well you can imitate anyone you know..."

And for all the anti Macca stuff, he's the man who got Hendrix on the bill at Monterey.

In summary The Beatles are/were the only contenders.

  7. I'd recommend the fabulous Jellyfish 1990-1993

Two great albums Bellybutton and Spilt Milk full of great songs brimming full of melodies, harmonies and general top poptasticness. Unfortunately they imploded after the ornate and complex Spilt Milk (More Beach Boys, Queen ish than the first album) but there's also a Best of which takes from both albums plus a few other bits n pieces.

The solo stuff / offshoots are cool too The Moog Cookbook (truly bizarre instrumental moog covers), The Grays, Jason Faulkner, Imperial Drag etc

    Here's the AllMusic blurb:

    allmusic ((( Jellyfish > Overview )))

Here's a few tasters...all live as the originals are no longer on YouTube

    The Ghost At Number One

YouTube - Jellyfish - The Ghost at Number One (Live on Later...)

    That Is Why

    New Mistake

  8. Damn, didn't know he was playing. :swearing:

Bought the Already Free album last month after seeing some great reviews and the Allman connection, although I thought it might be just guitar wank... but I was pleasantly surprised. Soulful vocals, great musicianship and songs.

  9. 1. Sheila E - The Glamorous Life

    3. Yoko Ono - Walking On Thin Ice

    4. Yoko Ono - Every Man Has A Women Who Loves Him

I love Prince and the Fabs....and Check My Machine plus a few other Macca Bs like Flying To My Home

Lots of good suggestions in the first couple of posts. My comp would be heavy on Ram, Band On The Run, Plastic Ono Band, Imagine and All Things Must Pass with maybe something from Ringo or one of the early singles... prob It Don't Come Easy. But at present I can't be arsed.:gringo:

  10. Another whoary old rocker

747 Strangers In The Night - Saxon

    "This is Scandinavian one-o-one

Flight from Hawaii coming out of the sun?

    Kennedy should be in sight

We can't see a thing here in the night.."

Make up yer mind, is it night or day??(

  11. If you read my post correctly (you obviously didn't), you'll see that I pointed out that the $10 (note, $ not ) would probably end up saving you money if you entered the NUMEROUS other showcases that being a user of sonicbids allows you to. QUITE OBVIOUSLY, posting one CD-R w/a one sheet is going to be cheaper than $10. It also obviously makes it smoother as the panel can simply log into sonicbids and look through the acts, rather than pass one CD-R through a number of people.

The exchange rate is not that bad yet...but there is no guarantee with whichever method you choose (postal / online), and there is also no transparency with Sonicbids.

I did say that online could be a suitable method but still don't see why a charge should be made for entry to this events selection process... and then there is my point about payment via credit cards which puts off entry...

  12. As far as I know, last year you could enter via sonicbids or via conventional methods (post), given the wording on the sonicbids website, this could be the case this year also. You don't pay $10 to apply for Go North specifically, you pay $10 to use sonicbids - which means you can enter for a multitude of other showcases. If you're the sort of band that enters for these sort of things, you're probably likely to be entering other ones, so $10 probably saves you money, compared to what you'd pay in CD-R's/postage, etc. I'd be surprised if Go North makes much, if any, from using this service, it's merely a way for the selection process to run a little bit smoother for them.

I disagree about the postage element (under 1.50 CDR, envelop and postage) and any smooth selection process ...as it depends on the internal process not the method of entry. If it HAS to be an upload entry then just make free because I'm sure this payment method will discourage people from entry (credit cards etc).

I'm actually disappointed that as usual I had to find out about this event on a Central Belt website, which goes to show that even after all these years they still can't promote the event to the local areas via press / web resources. And I also would agree with Cloud about transparency especially when the financial climate is like this so that the funding and processes can be seen to work.

  13. No Beatles were present, it was Noel Redding doing the backing vocals in a Beatles style.

Spot on, can't believe that misconception is still being aired (saw it on a Radio 2 Messageboard post the other week too) as it sounds nothing like any of The Beatles.

Top 5...for this moment in time but it's nearly impossible as there's so much choice:

    In My Life

    Something

    Strawberry Fields Forever

    A Day In The Life

    Can't Buy Me Love

  14. I can only think of 2 live shows that I was really looking forward too and were dire

Ozzy Osbourne - Edinburgh Playhouse 1986 - A total anti climax

Black Crowes - Aberdeen Capitol 1991 - Last show of the tour and they just seemed to stoned to care and I really thought they were gonna blow my mind.
