  1. FYI, I phoned Marshall and asked them to quote me on a re-valve. They said they won't do it that way, but instead will collect your amp and give it a full once over, then phone you and tell you what it needs and will cost before proceeding. If you don't wanna do it, they'll send it back and all you'll have paid is a measly few quid for the postage down and back. Like I said, they did mine and it's the best it EVER sounded. I figure it probably got some abuse and mis-use in the shop before I bought it, but now it's uber reliable, runs at a nice temperature, and sounds kickass.
  2. Me, I would rather spend the cash on having Marshall service the amp. Even the price of the valves, labour and carriage for the boys in Milton Keynes will be worth a spot on, roaring amp, rather than a flabby, un-reliable POS. Just call them up, ask to be put through to their service department, and they will be able to quote you and will arrange a carrier to pick the amp up from you. A valve is not an electronic piece of equipment, so it cannot really be just replaced by unplugging the old and refitting the new.
  3. Vote Karloff, you musical fiends. COME JOIN OUR KULT....
  4. I still think my drenched in blood idea is the best so far.
  5. Vox wah. It's the dog's nads. The Snarling Dog is an ace pedal tho, Slim Jim of Retro Rebels/Downroads fame uses one. The dog's eyes light up, and it has a switch to go between Estrogen (clean), and Testosterone (dirty) wah sound. Cool!

  7. Sounds ace People will have two kickass alt venues within spitting distance of each other!
  8. Nope, I never said that. I was empathising. Neil is not a Hobbit you know, he must be able to get a kids suit or something :D
  9. You should try being me, Neil. I have a 16.5 collar size, but a 32 waist. Either I get something that fits my neck and shoulders/chest, which then hangs off my midriff, or I get something that fits there that I can't do the top button up on and have to make like a hotdog to avoid ripping the shoulders apart. Nae fun.
  10. There is a tailor shop on John Street just before the college. Don't know what they do or how good they are though.
  11. If I am available to go, mine will involve blood. Lots of blood.
  12. You know we brought the extremity....
  13. I like EMGs. Even the non-active HZ range. I plan to fit EMG-60s to my ESP Viper-301 tho in the future. My Jackson RR has standard Jackson branded pickups in it, but they have quite large pole pieces. I built my own pre-amp for it, and it sounds bitchin. Used it mostly when I played in Bonesaw.
  14. I had problems with a blown output transformer in my Marshall head. R&B took about a month to get a new transformer (common part) from Marshall and have their "offsite engineer" fit it. It then lasted about a grand total of 40 minutes playing time before blowing the HT fuse, which it had never done before in 2 years of playing since new. R&B replaced the fuse and told me "these things happen", and I went away somewhat distrustful of their repair but assured by them it was ready to rock. Practising the following night in Tom's for a gig in the Lemon Tree, and amp dies again. I put it back to them in a panic needing it for the gig, but this time the transformer has gone again. I then call Marshall and am told they will happily take it for repair, so I have R&B send it to them. A month goes by, I hassle R&B some, they tell me Marshall are very busy. I phone Marshall and they tell me that they dispatched it the previous week, fixed and tested for a week by them. They also tell me that they re-valved it for me, and that they have done it as a warranty repair, despite the amp being just over 2 years old. This was because I'd written a rather narky and pissed off letter to their customer services department telling them what had happened with R&B and that I was considering selling the amp and buying a Mesa! I then hassle R&B more, and they say "Oooh, it is here, actually". When I go to pick it up they tell me that they're only charging for the carriage on the amp because of the previous repair they'd done (70!) and that Marshall had fixed it for free as a favour to them!!!! I took the amp, told them I'd already spoken to Marshall who had told me they'd fixed it because of the trouble I'd detailed in my letter to them, and told them I would not be using their shop ever again. Amp has been great and never missed a beat since. It has a little more edge and body to the sound too. FYI, if you phone Marshall and speak to their servicing people, they will happily arrange a courier to pick the amp up from your work or wherever and take it down to them. Once they've done the job they'll courier it to wherever you want.
  15. I use Jim Dunlop black 1mm picks, with the embossed writing on them. Due to an accident many years ago involving part of my right hand, I cannot keep a grip on smooth picks. Occasionally I also use a hint of superglue onto my forefinger to keep them in place if I'm having a bad time of it. I don't break strings any more or less than the next man, and I use plain old Rotosound 10-52 guage. It's all in the technique, I think, and I also find you can do more with a heavier pick. Accuracy is better, pick harmonics and scrapes are easier, etc.

  17. Well, I adjust my intonation every time I re-string, even though I always use the same brand and guage. Minor differences between each set, I guess, as it's never by much. But, to get the correct intonation on some strings requires some weird looking saddle positions on the tune-o-matic bridge, and I've had several "ooooh, that isn't right!" comments from other guitarists. However, it *is* right because my guitar tuner, and more importantly ear, sez it is. Ergo, chords played high up the fretboard sound in-tune and I can tune by harmonics and get spot-on. Correct intonation and action I believe are the most important things in terms of sound and ease/accuracy of tuning during a gig.
  18. The Maths : 1/Rt = 1/R1 + 1/R2 1/Rt = 1/8 + 1/8 1/Rt = 2/8 1/Rt = 1/4 (simplified from above) By cross multiplication, 4 = Rt. If you're wiring in serial, then you simply add up all the resistivities together to get the total ohmage.

  20. I use my 50W JCM2000 Marshall head set on : Gain Channel (normal mode) Gain : 10 Volume : 4-5 Treble : 6 Middle : 6 Bass : 8 Presence : 8 Deep switch on Mid cut switch off This I drive from an ESP Viper-301 with the EMG-HZ lead pickup (soon to be replaced with an EMG-60) wired directly to the guitar output (no volume/tone control or pickup selection!), and the amp hooks up to a 300W 50th Anniversary Fender 4x12 cab. The Fender cab is quite tonal rather than being bass driven like a Marshall, so I get a really tight, cutting sound from it. The 50W head is also better than a 100W because I can give it more master volume to get better valve drive, but without too much overall output volume level.
  21. Some bands I maybe haven't seen before several times...?
  22. MON 1ST - THE DEAD PETS, MISLED YOUTH & GILMAN STREET...8PM...4 The Dead Pets sound to the un-initiated is as modern old school punk rock with a Ska tinge. All the aggression of Agnostic Front, all the charm of the Mighty Mighty Bosstone's and all the fun of the Dropkick Murphy's. The seven-musician line up (including two bassists?) creates a solid yet clean sound. They're scruffy, tasteless, rude, offensive, aggressive and instantly likeable. The whole band ooze charisma, and they possess one vital strength that you rarely see with commercial punk bands... they all look like they are having a great time. And this creates a great atmosphere in a small venue!! www.thedeadpets.co.uk TUES 2ND - ACOUSTIC OPEN MIC hosted by STEVE CRAWFORD...8PM...FREE WED 3RD - PARAVION, FOIL, DEDALUS & JAILBIRD LIME...8PM...3.50 FOIL - Fine Edinburgh band, signed to 13th Hour records, who have already released an album and several eps. Think June of 44, laden with depth and fantastic guitar sounds. DEDALUS - Think Joy Division angles, tinged with Interpol, and The Smiths melodies, while being compromised by God Speed You & JAILBIRD LIME - He listens to an unhealthy amount of Bright Eyes, Flaming Lips and The Microphones.
