  1. You're being sarcastic, right?

They say that about pretty much every course that isn't arts related.

Well, no. Everyone I know to have done this course (around 8 or 9 people) had it happen to them so I have no reason to disbelieve it.

  2. I was under the impression that mechanical engineering = job straight away. I'm about to start the HNC/HND at college in a couple of weeks and we were told everyone who finishes the course gets a course related job at the end of it, with good pay at that. Like, we wouldn't even have to send out CVs, the companies just come in and start picking people out.

  3. What about stuff like the godfather theme that slash plays? That's technically I guess a big guitar solo, but it sounds damn good. Or what about classical pieces transposed onto guitar, such as pachabel's canon, or that paganini 5th caprice thing at the end of crossroads? Are they classed under "look at me I'm better than him" or could it be that someone thought it might sound, like - I don't know, nice maybe?

  4. You can have your instruments chipped and added to a register I think. You report your instrument as stolen and it can be scanned like a pet to give out information such as who the owner is etc etc.

I remember reading about it in guitarist a few years ago so not sure if the scheme ever really took off but it seems like a sensible idea.

  5. I'd disagree that cars are a luxury. I live in the middle of nowhere, I work shifts at tesco that don't mix with the times that buses run between where I live and Inverurie (where I work). If I could no longer afford to run my car then I'd be pretty fucked as I wouldn't have a job anymore, which would then mean that I wouldn't be able to pay my way through college. So because I live in the middle of nowhere, and cars are seen as a 'luxury' item, does that mean I don't deserve the same chance as everyone else at getting some kind of education so that I'm not stuck working at tesco for the rest of my life? The shifts in the department I work in are either 9am-7pm or 7pm-11pm, so getting different hours wouldn't change anything because either of those 2 shifts are still outwith bus operating times. I can't walk or cycle to work because I live ten miles away.

    What's a man to do?

I wish people would pipe down with this 'cars are a luxury, not a necessity' crap. Cars have become so integrated into our society that they have become a necessity for a lot of people, and it isn't fair to just tax the crap out of motorists, the burden should be spread out a little more evenly... Either that or this 6bn extra a year can go into reducing the cost of fuel so that everyone gets a break.

  6. I quite enjoyed that. Picked up some hints of Radiohead and Bright Eyes. And the singing... well, it has it's own quality to it - like it fits the vibe better than someone who would maybe sing it perfectly. I don't know, I'm no music critic but I liked it all the same. 'People I Know' has a wee tinge of floyd in it, I liked that one especially.

  7. I currently have...

    Guitars

Epiphone Les Paul with a DiMarzio Super Distortion in the bridge

    Yamaha Pacifica 112

    Amps

Marshall AVT20 - I wish to god I'd just waited and saved for the AVT50 or 250 but I wanted a new amp and that was all I could afford at the time.

    Peavey Renown 400

    Effects

    BOSS PW-10 (wacka wah...)

    BOSS CS-3

    Marshall Jackhammer

I have a few bits and bobs I don't really use, namely a Stagg 10w practice amp, a peavey acoustic and a wee marshall travel amp that rarely sees the light of day.

  8. Must of been scary as fuck. Good to hear it's only cuts and bruises though.

And of course' date=' if young drivers insurance wasn't bad enough (I should know) they're gonna hit you hard. What did you have? Fully comp, TPF&T?[/quote']

Yeah, it was without a doubt the scariest thing that's ever happened to me.

Yeah, my insurance was 1400 for a year. I used to have TPF&T but when I passed my test I got it upgraded to fully comp, and thank fuck for that. I have a 400 excess though so I'll probably only get 5 or 6 hundred quid off of them. I was covered for contents and the cd player and stuff though, and since basically everything in the car with me got trashed I reckon I can claim back another couple of hundred there too.

I'm looking to get another clio though - that thing held up like a fucking hero considering the circumstances. If it had been a saxo or something I was driving, christ - the car would probably have just disintegrated with the impact and I might not be here just now.

  9. Speeding?

    No, I was doing 60, maybe 65.

The roads were well greasy, I was travelling along a road I drive on every day. Went round a slight bend and felt the back of the car start to slip out, I panicked and slammed on the brakes. Bad move.

the car went onto the verge on the left, I tried to get it back on the road but it skidded right across it and went over a wall and landed nose first in a field. Then it flipped and stuff. I thought I was going to die :S

I'm well lucky to have walked out of it with just cuts and bruises.

  10. I was meant to be doing Advanced English yesterday but I crashed my car and wrote it off completely on thursday night. I'm very, very lucky to have been able to walk away from that 'cause the car flipped like 3 times. I was too shaken up still to do the exam, also I had no sleep as I didn't get home from the hospital until about 6am.

  11. well it's all about compromise isn't it? you can't have it all one way, even if it is a "slight annoyance". I'm sure it's a "slight annoyance" for smokers to go outside, but they have to accept that. So just accept that you have to walk past people who are smoking to get in and out of venues now.

  12. Well, I'm happy the pubs are smoke free. I don't exactly go out often, but I'm trying to quit so it's quite good to not go out and light up all the time.

Anyway, running a car and smoking don't go together at all. I just had to pay £120 for two new front tyres and to get my tracking fixed, £150 towards insurance and I have a meagre £100 for petrol/food/phone credit etc. Fuck spending £5 on 20 fags when I could get another 50 miles or so out of the car!

However, it's taking the piss to complain about smokers being outside the door. That's pretty rough, the actual pub is smoke free and that's what's important, right? Out in the open it's not like you're going to get cancer from walking past people who are smoking.
