Aberdeen to Oban

Recommended Posts

Was thinking it would be nice to go to Oban on the west coast, as I'm new to Aberdeen, could anyone tell me the best way to get there on public transport?

Thanks

Probably a bus/train to Glasgow then bus/train to Oban.

Depends if you want to get there quickly and more expensively or if you're not fussed.

Don't take my word for it as I've never gone there myself, but that's probably how I'd look at getting there.

From central Glasgow to Oban

For exact schedules from Glasgow to Oban (and elsewhere in Scotland), please check:

Trains from Queen Street Station:

ScotRail | Scotland's Railway , trainline: buy cheap train tickets, get UK train times & fares - book seats online (the latter website offers numerous discount

fares)

Buses from Buchanan Bus Station:

www.citylink.co.uk

Bus and train trips usually depart Glasgow shortly after 8 am, 12 pm and 6 pm on weekdays

(and less frequently on winter Sundays, when there may be one singe departure a day),

arriving in Oban around 3 h later (there is no significant difference in travel time between the

bus and the train) it is highly recommended to double-check schedules before travelling

to avoid getting stuck in Glasgow! Both the bus and train journey are very scenic enjoy!

Advance booking over the internet can result in substantial savings and reserves you a

guaranteed seat (the line from Glasgow to Oban is not busy for most of the year, but

individual trips can get oversold during the summer tourist season)! Regular one way fares

are around 16 (train) and 12 (bus), but APEX fares can give you up to 50 % reduction.

Copied this off a site. The Trainline is where i get all my tickets, book in advance and you'll save a bunch, also check out the prices of single tickets as you can often book two singles for cheaper than a return. You can get a train single to Glasgow for a tenner (or 6.60 with a rail card) or the Megabus for round about 5-10 pounds depending on when you book and what time you go.

If you're prepared to wait until nearer summer, you can go Aberdeen-Perth-Oban when Citylink do the summer timetable, it would be a heck of a lot quicker than going via Glasgow....

Yes, you can get there via Perth. Did it a few years back. Still a long trip though.

Expensive too IIRC, If there are two or more of you going, it might be seriously worth checking out a car rental package instead. Going via Coupar Angus Dunkeld, Aberfeldy & Crianlarich is the quickest route I've found by car from Aberdeen.

Also some great places in and around Oban that are well worth a visit but public transport ain't that good.

Some of the big hotels there did pretty good winter rates as well. Once met and got absolutely slaughtered with a BBC crew in that big hotel by the central roundabout. We started out by arguing over our filling the hotel's secure storeroom with our gear!

Oh, check-out the Nevis Bakery when you are there - Steak pies to die-for! :D

You get cracking views if you go by train.

I loved driving there for our honeymoon in 2006 though, just head to Perth and then straight across, via some pretty awesome scenery!
