Before everyone gets jumpy here's a more detailed article about the plans. Seems quite good to me.:

£5 MILLION PLAN TO BREATHE LIFE INTO MITHER KIRK

A Historic Aberdeen landmark is getting a £5 million makeover - to become an important community venue.

The upgraded Kirk of St Nicholas - known as the Mither Kirk - will cater for concerts, sports, dance and art.

It will also have a health cafe, run by Foyer Enterprise and a Third World Centre specialising in Fair Trade goods.

And other attractions will include the Montgomery Centre for development education, a family-tree centre, rehearsal studios and office accommodation.

Members of the church are leading the project and have the support of Aberdeen City Council and a development board of Aberdeen business people.

A fund-raising campaign was launched in the Kirk yesterday.

Members of the church and Aberdeen City Council have contributed £1.4 million.

A further £200,000 has been pledged by individuals and organisations and £700,000 is expected to come from the Lottery Fund and various charitable foundations - leaving £2.7 million to be raised.

Chairman of the development board David Paton said: "Although a notable building, the Kirk has become hidden and is unknown to generations of Aberdonians.

"We want to breathe new life into this ancient building, filled with treasures, and give it a new beginning."

There will also be a community kitchen where the most vulnerable in society can learn basic skills such as cooking and planning a healthy diet.

Mither Kirk Project leader Arthur Winfield said: "Many local community groups and charities have told us of the lack of affordable meeting spaces in Aberdeen and this project aims to provide facilities which will enable these groups to continue to grow."

The business plan suggests the new venue should be self-financing within one year of completion.

Many of the original features, such as the East Kirk stained glass, the unique Compton organ and St Mary's Chapel will be restored.

Unearthed treasures are already on display in the church, as part of an on-going archaeological dig at the Kirk.

The excavation programme is scheduled to take six months.
