  1. I like both The only reason I didn't list them in my albums of the decade is because I only really started listening to them too recently to judge.
  2. The AVclub (awesome site affiliated with The Onion for this unfamiliar with it) have posted their top fifty. Some stuff I really enjoyed in there like The Thermals' 'The Body, The Blood, The Machine', Fugazi's 'The Argument' alongside stuff that is actually pretty defining even if I didn't pay too much attention at the time it came out like Justin Timberlake's 'Justified' and The Killers 'Hot Fuss' and The Street's 'Original Pirate Material'. The best music of the decade | Music | The A.V. Club
  3. No particular order: Death From Above 1979 - You're a Woman, I'm a Machine (2004) Soulwax - Any Minute Now (2004) Joanna Newsome - The Milk-Eyed Mender (2004) 2ManyDJs - As Heard on Radio Soulwax part 2 (2003) Justice - Cross (2007) Calexico - Feast of Wire (2003) The Arcade Fire - Funeral (2004) Crystal Castles - S/T (I'm sorry, but I fucking love THAT sound) (2008) Rock on, 2004! There are others, but these have all been turning points or albums I THINK will sum up the decade for my favourably.
  4. Reading NME is like looking at a 2D version of a second rate student disco, but reluctantly doing so because the alternatives are an overpriced 2D fidgetrave club or a horribly self-concious RAAAAWK!! club where people can throw the 'horns' without blushing. I guess the third alternative is logging onto Aberdeen-Music and writing analogies that even I find suspect :S
  5. Are there any more tracks like the last single on it? That song's like a lost goth classic from the mid-eighties or something, it's pretty cool and I'm considering a jump to the album if it's got a similar sound.

    Your current read?

Class A recommendation, excellent book and awesome film. The Big Lebowski is also worth (re?)watching too after becoming familiar with Chandler
  7. Not a big fan of Hadoken. They had some pretty sick noises though and music should be all about sick noises sometimes. I'll throw in some more recommendations. Any Minute Now by Soulwax seems to have been an influential album in the past few years. There's some really thick, fat sounding electronics on this album and the rock style song structures make it a great cross over record. YouTube - Soulwax * E-talking Atari Teenage Riot are incredibly divisive, but with a bit of time and without being subjected to their sometimes silly posturing, they were pretty incredible. I love the fact that some people seem to agressively hate them when they were doing some pretty cool shit for the time they were around. I'm pretty biased though... I feel I'm maybe stating the obvious here, but (I'll probably catch so much shit for this...) Crystal Castles? The band themselves seem like pricks, but goddamn if that thick, glitchy, punky sound they have doesn't do it for me. I really love that squelchy kind of sound they do. At work, so don't have a huge amont of time but Justice, Digitalism, Tiga, Boys Noize and various other electronic acts of their ilk may itch that scratch you have.
  8. That was kind of my experience of it too, actually. I didn't come in with the same expectations as you did as I'd heard it in bits and pieces over the years but the one time I put it on without wanting to skip to the tracks I found more instantly accessible like 'London Calling', 'Koka Kola' it just clicked. A lot of albums I really like now were growers while a lot of the albums I found instantly accessible can probably now be found downstairs in One-Up.
  9. Don't feel bad, I was probably picking out a pair of jeans from Elementzzzzzzzzz at the time...
  10. If anyone's curious what my favoutite albums are (and lets face it, nobody is but I'm antsy to write about music some more), they are: The Clash - London Calling Predictable? Probably, but I remember listening to this one day and it just opened up and unlocked for me and made perfect sense. Another album that's a 'fuck you' to genre conventions from a band that had already received a lot of flak from the people who would have held them back. 2manydjs - As Heard on Radio Soulwax, Pt. 2 See above! Iggy & The Stooges - Raw Power Noise and dirt and fuzz and sex and power and ffffffffffff
  11. Yeah, same here. This means that some of the albums I'm going to post are a little embarrassing now, but I can't deny their influence upon my musical taste and even my life in general. DISCLAIMER:As such, these aren't my favourite albums, but they are special to me. Music was always just kind of 'there' for me before this. In my school in the late nineties it seemed that pretty dull 'lads' indie ruled the roost (as it still seems to, really) and that stuff's never held any appeal for me. A girl I knew turned me on to this album and my mind was blown. Misanthropy! Cynicism! Wow! I hadn't really considered that there was a whole world of music out there waitig to be explored beyond the Top 40. It's embarrassing that Marilyn Manson was my gateway act, but I think my life would have been different had I never found a gateway act at all. Having Marilyn Manson as my gateway act led me down a bit of an industrial/metal route. This had it's pros & cons. (Pros: Atari Teenage Riot, Cop Shoot Cop, Ministry, Nine Inch Nails; Cons: Godhead, Static-X, Spineshank, Powerman 5000). A friend of mine played me this album... ...and I HATED it. I was a fan of crunches and bleeps and bloops and glitches and it sounded kind of tinny to me. But it grew on me. I liked how Jello Biafra's lyrics were political, but funny without the didactism that turned me off of bands like RATM. From there I fell in love with surf influenced guitar and the sheer energy of album. This is the album that led me to The Clash, Black Flag, The Stooges, MC5, XTC, Gang of Four and countless other amazing bands. I still like this one today. ACHIEVEMENT UNLOCKED: Punk Fan (25G) Until I heard this, I had a pretty similar antipathy towards electronic music that a lot of rock fans can have. This album's clear rejection of 'indie cool' just to make something so joyous and snobbery free really turned me on to blowing open my musical tastes. This one IS one of my favourite albums ever, even if it is beginning to sound a little bit dated now.

    Pet Hates!

I like nothing more than recling in my gaming chair, doning my Nintendo PowerGlove , strapping on my rumble-feedback vest and then breaking down in tears at what I've become.

    Your current read?

I must admit that I wasn't really familiar with him before picking this book up (I actually bought as a present for someone who already had it and ended up getting hooked instead of going back to the shop), but I might just look out for those. Thanks

    Your current read?

Is Fell still being released? I was buying it in single issues and it seemed to disappear all of a sudden. I'm reading Japrocksampler by Julian Cope at the moment. I always feel slightly guilty reading books about music, even if it is to help me find some new stuff. Very well written and informative so far. The ol' English student in me likes reading about what pop music means, as corny as that sounds.
  15. This wasn't what I expected from the description, but in a good way. I'm not the best person to offer technical help so I can only really add that I love the balance you seem to strike between melancholy atmosphere and hooks. It reminds me of Depeche Mode at their best in some ways. I hope you do choose to play live at some point, that would be interesting to see.
  16. This stuff's cool. It's refreshing to hear something danceable and really smooth sounding. You remind me favorably of Chromeo on some tracks, that you seem to be simultaneously tongue in cheek yet totally sincere and confident too. I'm actually quite fond of the vocals. The contrast between 'normal guys' vocals and fantasy-land synth textures creates a cool mood, kind of whimsical but grounded, if that makes sense! Thumbs up!
  17. I support this. Sadly, I think some damage to the site's reputation HAS been done. I used to post a good few years back, but left partly because I found it was too easy to be rude to real people on here and it wasn't a part of myself I was particularly proud of falling prey to on occasion. Coming back after a number of years, it seems that there is still a really bitter, vindictive element on here that only justify some of the criticism the site receives. I posted a thread in the networking forum and instead found that the thread had become a feedback thread full of pretty useless criticism instead, the purpose of which seemed to be to frighten me off rather than provide pointers. That would be fine if I actually posted in the feedback forum (which ironically, seems pretty civil) and I'm big enough and ugly enough to realise the links posted are an acquired taste to say the very least, but the welcome I got was pretty much: "Hurrr, fresh meat boys...he don't even got no rep!" There were no relevant responses to my query at all. This site is can be an awesome resource and the reality of having a place where so many people from similar social groups in a smallish city is going to entail some clashes, it's just a shame that a small, rude element can make this place an off putting experience for some people.
  18. Godzilla Blues, you disappoint me. You like Diabolik, yet you have weak ears? Diabolik would blast us while driving his Jaguar and stealing jewels and shit then he'd crash his Jaguar and laugh because he has like twenty of them and that's just his style. So are you guys wanting to play or not?
  19. If you've opened this thread, chances are you're pretty tough. Good. Beats of Rage are digital-hardcore influenced cyberpunks who use guitars, Gameboys, C64s and a vat-grown replicant's voice to make MAXIMUM NOISE ATTACK. Look, here's our Myspace: www.myspace.com/beatsofrage1992 On December the 4th we're playing with Bomb Berlin who come from all over Scotland, almost like a multinode computer network that has gained sentience. Bomb Berlin will be supporting Alec Empire this month and sound like a glitched out street-punk selling illicit ROMs in a back alley in Neo-Tokyo 2019. This is happening in Cellar 35 and it's pretty exciting and we might have an exciting extra guest we can't quite announce yet, but we need YOUR help. That's right. We're looking another (or even two) fast, hard edged act(s) who ideally make use of electronics and aren't happy until someone is blasted into static. Solo acts are cool, as are bands. Chiptuners, laptop musicians and the like are all encourage. Hey, leave a message here if you're interested, maybe leave one on our Beats of Rage Myspace instead if you like. Just be brave. And loud.
