  1. Cheers for the suggestions. Iv pretty much just been using ultimate-guitar.com and stuff so far, plus a few wee lesson articles and youtubes here and there. I think getting involved with a band would probably be the best thing for me as it would give me that little bit more motivation. Its just hard to get involved with bands at this age when your not very good! haha! (was much easier at 14 when everyone was useless...)

  2. Um... yeah. Im moving up to aberdeen from edinburgh for uni start of next month. and ill definately be looking to play osme music while im there. Problem is... i come from edinburgh where the music scene is populated entirely by flying pigs... You know, bands can get away with being shit here because even if they are the worst in europe, they are still one of the best in edinburgh...

Now moving to aberdeen with its big uber music scene and so many good bands and stuff, does no one in the smaller bands kicking about aberdeen feel they are completely overshadowed by some of the talent that seems to have gathered there? Cant help but feel a 17 year old lad with a few mates on a stage and some crappy instruments (we r students... cant afford much) will just seem like a pisstake up there =P

Someone go n tell me im wrong! Haha!

  3. Myself and a mate are moving up to Aberdeen for uni in september and we will be looking to start a band when we get up there. We'd both like to do a sort of twin vocals thing so we'd be looking for 1 more vocalist, a guitarist or 2 and maybe a bassist (depending on whether my mate decides to play bass or guitar...) a drummer and maybe a synth player. We have some decent synth equipment already, so kit isnt too much of a problem. Dont really wanna say "We wanna sound like *insert band name here*", but for the sake of people knowing what we are into, we like kinda... parkway drive, killswitch engage kinda stuff. and we are both big my minds weapon fans =P Thats a few influences we have in common, but by no means are we going to limit the band to that.

Bit of a rant there, but i thought i may as well give as much information as possible now and save people the bother of asking then realising they dont want to be in the band =)

P.S not expecting much interest really... just thought it would be worth a bash...

    Cheers,

    Greg

  4. I currently have 3 bands on my phone as thats all i can fit. This, Fellsilent, Parkway Drive and Killswitch Engage. To be completely honest, this is the album I keep coming back to. Iv had it on shuffle and loop for... 2 weeks solid now. I think its an excellent album and although there are a few dodgy bits, im still picking out bits and pieces that i hadnt noticed before. Great album. Good work MMW.

  5. In my opinion, alot of band used to use solos as a way to remind their audience that they could in fact play guitar... Take AC/DC for example! they come up with or or 2 riffs per song then every so often bash in some mental solo as if to point out that they do, in fact, have talent (im not a big AC/DC fan... you might have guessed).

However, There are a lot of good bands using solos well in todays music. Take the solo in killswitch engages cover of Dios holy diver. (granted its a cover... but the solos are still impressive, and i feel they just fit in well. My opinion however. Im sure someone here will disagree)

Even Aberdeens own My Minds Weapon make good use of a nice wee solo here and there, but its not all just shredding, sweeping and other guitar wankery. It still sounds good though.

And in reference to an earlier post, yes. Im shit at guitar...
