    Mindhunter on netflix is great.

Binged this in 2 days. Really liked it. You can tell straight away it's a David Fincher project, which I love. Also, great to see the "His name is robert paulson" guy getting a meaty role. He was really great in it. As was the guy who played Ed Kemper. Fantastic.

Also watched Big Mouth. That's something else like. Belly laughs throughout and really surreal. Great cast too.

Stranger Things 2 is getting watched now. Been pretty good so far.

I thought the last season was actually pretty good. It's taken so long to build this world it you feel really invested in it so maybe my blinkers are on in terms of how good the show actually is. The mad lion king dude in the last season was equal parts ace and dumb. The Negan character was legitimately great though - so evil to the very core, which isn't always the case with baddies on shows like this. They went for it 100% to the point where he was so evil you kinda liked him for it.

I get weirdly nostalgic watching the Walking Dead. Watching them in such dire peril I'm thinking things like 'oh remember when life was bliss back in the prison'. I think it shows how well they've built up their universe over the years.

Looking back, the season was actually okay. But the pacing was far too slow (we finally get negan then we have to sit through a bunch of bin-rakers talking like a stoned Yoda) and some of the script was just terrible -  they kept doing the bate and switch as if it was the most fantastic story telling device ever created.

I think both Negan, and Ezekiel haven't translated well from comic to screen. Negan seemed super cool and menacing at first, but basically all he is now is a shit eating grin, leaning. I blame the showrunners for that though. JDM is a great actor, but i feel like he has no control over the character, and is just told to lean every DAMN time. They've made a very complex character very one note, and I think that kind of stuck with Kirkman as he wrote Here's Negan, which was pretty poor tbh.
And Ezekiel is very much a comic character. Hearing him do the theatre lines is just cringy at times.

Looking back, the way S7E1 was presented was brilliant. Showing Rick's trauma and making you wait to see who got killed was fantastic story telling. But any brilliance was trumped by that shitty S6 cliffhanger.

  3. Marvel Legacy has started. Everything's going back to old numbering. Which is good, as I really need to do a cull, so if runs are jumping from issue 12 to issue 512, I won't pick up 512 and call it a day.

Also, Dark Nights Metal has began over at DC. It's been really good. Looking forward to Doomsday Clock more though, for the same reasons as above, I hope Dr Manhattan resets the numbering, as I need to do a DC cull too, especially considering I still need to actually read New52 and Watchmen, and my two 300 issue longboxes are full up.

Here's Negan was shit. Glad I didn't fall for the blind box. If I paid £150 and got that, I'd be fucking gutted.

Royal City has started again, and as with everything Jeff Lemire does, it's brilliant. And all the cover variants are 90s album covers.

  4. New Walking Dead was on last night. Was okay. Better than it has been in a while, but that's not saying much. I'm pretty much at the point where I've invested so much time i feel like i have to see it through, and I'm unpatiently waiting for the final episode. Same with the comics. Time to get the Alien's involved and put an end to it.

    What happened to J-Roc?

I gave up after the Snoop Dogg episode. Quite possibly the worst bit of TV ever. I feel compelled to finish it but that episode put me right off.

The newest series was a lot better. Not as good as the heyday but definitely a lot better than it's been recently.

Royal Mail. Absolute bunch of useless bastards. And I say that as someone with an uncle and a friend who works for them.

My gf pre-ordered the Enter Shikari - The Spark bundle (limited mint record, bonus clear record, tape, cd, slipmats and a top) as my main present. Dispatch note was 20th September (the album was due to come out on the 22nd, so pretty decent time to post it out. 22nd came, nothing. monday the 25th came, nothing. It got closer and closer to my birthday (2nd October) and nothing arrived. It's now been 2 weeks since the album was released, and still nothing. the distributor has offered a replacement or refund. I'm just hoping the mint record wasn't as limited as they let on, and that they have some spares.

Second pet hate: having records I want in my hand but not being able to buy them - waiting on chameleon to get in the twin peaks records, and waiting for the spark to turn up, i popped in HMV and picked all three up. had them in my hand. put them back, knowing I'd get them from elsewhere. That was 4 days ago. I still don't have any of them.

Update: Chameleon got in the Twin Peaks records I was after. Got them plus Mogwai - Atomic.
Also, looks like we'll get a replacement sent out for the Enter Shikari record. Only problem is, we ordered the limited signed mint vinyl. I'm afraid they'll only have the normal silver left (not fussed about getting it signed to be honest). My gf laid it on thick about it being a main present, and told them to send it tracked, or even next day. They replied saying they'll get back to us on Monday.

New pet hate: Taking over a day to reply to an email at 5.25pm to tell me I'll get a proper reply on monday.

How is reading the meter still a job that a person has? You can submit readings by text message now. I can do mine through an app, because it's not the 80's.

When I was with SSE, they were dead pushy about their men reading the meter, even though they'd send me text messages saying "You MUST submit your meter readings NOW" which I'd do, then a guy would still turn up a few days later. He always seemed to come in the evenings whilst I was cooking, and my gas meter was a pain in the arse to get to in the very small kitchen, so I'd tell him "I've already sent them in". "Yeah, but you are legally obligated to let us see them" and starts giving me some spiel about how the meter is their property, giving it large like he's a bailiff.

Nah. Kitchen's occupied. Go get a warrant. You drive a van around to do a job that can be done by e-mail. Jog on.

My meter was above my door. So I had to go get a ladder for him. I had to enter mine online every now and again. Then someone would come round. It's like, either trust the numbers I give you, or don't make me get the ladder out if you're going to send someone anyway.

He did a fair bit for LGBT rights, censorship and fought against Christian establishment in America. That's pretty cool. However, he was reportedly rather abusive, sexually, physically and emotionally, to a number of the girls. I was reading he used to give some of the girls a particular sedative which he referred to as "thigh openers".

Wasn't he also - allegedly - involved in some of the nasty stuff Bill Cosby was up to?

aye i've only really realised all this stuff post-death.
i'm pretty sure it was in an article he offered a girl a quaalude and called them "thigh openers"

  10. Enter Shikari's new album, The Spark, is out on Friday. And it's fucking amazing. Really loved it. It's very different. So those who didn't like them when they first started may actually enjoy the new stuff more. A lot more polished and mature. I got to hear it early to review it.

But seriously, i can't really say too much right now about it, but it's my album of the year easy. Haven't enjoyed a full record this much in a good while.

Anybody got any tips on recording vocals? From the mic, down to any FX, EQ, compression etc used?

My band recorded a demo yesterday. It was very rushed so we didn't have too much time to experiment. I don't know jack about microphones, but no matter which one we used, we couldn't get the vocals to not sound like they'd been recorded over the phone. I think we're going to have to make do, and just throw a heap of Beastie Boys-esque distortion over them, which is what I tend to do anyway. But some tips would be good for future recordings.

Here's my "one night class and 3 weeks in to my HND" advice:

What mic are you using? Perhaps the frequency response isn't great. Maybe set up a pop shield too.
Make sure it's gained properly on the way in. If it's too low you'll get the hiss and shit when you turn it up post recording. If it's too high you get distortion etc.
EQ and compression probably best on the channel, I'd put any FX on a send/return channel. But before any EQ and that, make sure your dry signal is decent. If you've got a cheap mic, you'll not get great results. I assume you're using a pre-amp/interface? They should have gain knobs on them to get the right level on the way in. Leave yourself some headroom.
