most RIFF stuff (early pelican, early ISIS etc) goes down a treat too. :)

you knows it, that and cheesy metalcore... Killswitch, Agony Scene, Bleeding Through and other equally keech bands that wouldn't be touched in any other situations (except ETiD). Devils Sold His Soul for night time most definately.

  2. the marshall avt series are without doubt one of the worst series of amplifiers built

gash sounding, over expensive and unreliable are ways I would describe em, a few pals who work in music retail will also testify this. also had a pal whos avt head broke about 5 times in 3 years

do yourself a favour and get rid of the thing asap, you could get a real amp for that kind of money

correct. from what i've seen/heard AVTs are seriously(!) unreliable and produce a very sub-stanmdard sound. there is no - despite what marshall say - sculpting to the sound. with the EQs everything seems a bit too weak or a bit too powerful. the effects loop makes odd noises and just doesnt sound very good. i reckon you actually get a better overdrive sound out of a 40 marshall 10w practice amp.

  3. Need cash to fund other gear.

was bought for 236 about 4 years ago. Hasnt really been played in about 6 months as i've got a head cab set-up sorted. Its in mint condition, great amp for (pretty loud) home practice or even gigging.

75 watts into a 1 by 12" speaker. 4 programmable presets with 6 amp models and a range of effects.

    questions or tryouts just ask.

i'll let it go for 110 ono

  4. from denovali?

timo just got the actual pressing the other day so id wait a while before getting upset :D

yeah i know. he said the pressing plant were pretty unreliable. just can't wait to slap it on. i think it shipped on tuesday though, hopefully come on monday. :)

this weekend is tional for gigs... Friday Night Gunfight, Archives and Mesa Verde in Dundee on saturday

Explosions + Eluvium in Glasgow on Sunday

Meet Me In St. Louis etc monday.

    oucha.

  6. I've yet to see them live so I'll reserve judgement but the singles and songs on myspace ARE good.

i really didn't enjoy Glasvegas for some reason. If they are in anyway comparable to the twilight sad (if only for the Glaswegian accent) they lose, miserably. Did they coin that phrase by the way?

This Town Needs Guns. Not sure whether i like the name or i don't, either way i think they're good.

  7. the only reason i blew my amp is because i am a tool and forgot to turn down the gain on my distortion when it was on full. Bye bye tweeter. :nono:

i think when your amp is red it is 'peaking'. your cab usually has 2 power ratings RMS (root mean square?) and peak. the peak figure is usually a HEAP higher then the RMS figure so as long as you only are really hitting red when your strumming/plucking/picking strings then i think its fine. at least thats the way i understand it. if your always in the red you probably want to tone it down a wee bit. since your amp and cab are matched your pretty safe with gain as long as your not putting through any dodgy frequencies.

a compressor woul;d probably do your distortion a bit of good, take out any unwanted high end i think. Tuner first though.... Boss TU-2, do it now. Sell one of your distortions!

  8. i agree.

but i'd prefer it if it was just a 'Bands Forum' where anybody could post a topic about a band they like and it could be discussed at length. I know the answer will be 'use the music discussion', but i never find it works there. I'm not sure if its just because people don't want to discuss the bands at length.... probably is.

  9. what gauge of strings are you using at the moment huw? for a new katerwaul song i tuned my bass down to (from lowest string) BEAD, so its like the lowest 4 strings of a 5 string bass in standard tuning. it seemed to cope fine with this. i use gauge 50 strings, so you could just try a heavier gauge, or if you are already using gauge 50's try the next set up. could you also maybe put your bass in to get set up somewhere to cope with the lower tuning?

i put my bass into rnb with 50-110 guage. still found it a bit slack. might get some of those GHS strings off thomann that go up to 115 and get it set up somewhere else.

  10. Couldn't tell ya mate, i was just gonna do it rather than have my bass tuned BCGCF (i dont go lower than C with this band so i just left it), i was gonna take the A and use that for mirroring the guitar better.

But pauls answer seems decent (from having a quick glance.)

There are two common ways of tuning a 5 string bass

    G

    D

    A

    E

    B

the B is added to the bottom gives you 5 extra lower notes below the E.

    the second one

    C

    G

    D

    A

    E

this way the e is on the bottom and you have the extra 5th string on the top giving you 5 extra higher notes than the usual G

the way you need to set up the five string is like the second one, then down tune each string individually to the desired pitch.

    C down to A

    G down to F

    D down to C

    A down to G

    E down to C

since usually the tuning for a 5th string is having the lower B below the E, using the second way of tuning using the 5th to add higher notes moves the open notes of the strings down each string

    1 2

    G----C down to A

    D----G down to F

    A----D down to C

    E----A down to G

    B----E down to C

so the notes moving down the strings will compensate for the slackness involved in downt tuning

    hope it helps

so i buy a 5 string set up for EADGB (low to high) - instead of BEADG - with heavy guage strings than tune it down to CGCFA?

please tell me i'm right. it took me a long time to get that. i have no idea why.
